Just flipped channels and they were showing red licorice covered in chocolate. That sounds incredibly gross to me. I love chocolate and licorice but NOT together. Yuk!

@bargainsgirl Well, Mary Louise Ludwig also brings to Gourmet Holiday fruitcake ha. Being somewhat facetious I don't mind some fruitcakes but agree with you on chocolate and licorice. Ewww.

Have loved red licorice all my life! l have always loved dark chocolate all my life! But, the idea of putting them together does not seem to work for me. I have had different flavors of Darrell Lea Australian soft licorice and it is really delicious. Darrell Lea red licorice is terrific!

@ScarletDove Good to know, will keep an eye out for it! I worked for Qantas Airways in SF and those fun loving Australians would bring us all kinds of licorice, it was heaven. And Australian beer ha.

Maybe I should start a separate thread as since there is a decent amount of PA people here on the forum, wondering about a coal looking hard licorice in a little white box with a hammer / anvil. Does that ring a bell? Can't find it online, company probably no longer exists.

@bargainsgirl Viewer discretion advised...First of all, red "licorice" is not licorice. Licorice is black. Secondly, Licorice dot com is a joke. Serious licorice addicts are looking for intense licorice flavors that don't melt away. So, if we find soft licorice, we put it in the freezer or let it get stale. We like Cat's Ears and other European licorice. Finally, if you are going to add anything to black licorice, it would probably be mustard... also Sambuca is good. JMO

@rockygems123 Oh my! Yes, I do remember that white box of "coal" licorice. My dad was from Pa. Seems like we had it every Christmas when dad's family would visit us and bring some with them.

I have not thought about that licorice in years. I loved the small hammer that came with it.

WOW! What a blast from the past. It was delicious too.

@rockygems123 The only Austraian licorice I have tried is the soft Darrell Lea which you can find on Amazon. I first saw it at the HomeGoods store on the racks by checkout and loved it so much looked online...found on Amazon. Stopped buying since the supplier was not shipping a fresh product. Have not purchased for about 5 years.

All you need is the name of the company you described, then search online. Start a separate thread, could be very interesting....

@PA Mom-mom Curious...do you dip black licorice in the mustard and what kind of mustard?

@ScarletDove When I was six (7, 8, etc.), I would buy a licorice twizzler at the swimming pool and put yellow mustard on it like on a pretzel stick. These days I just dip - when no one is looking. Most people don't understand.

@PA Mom-mom I do understand, many of us have found combinations of certain foods that work for our individual taste, especially when we were kids and I still love those little unusual mixtures. One trick I learned as an adult while traveling in Costa Rica was to sprinkle a bit of black pepper on vanilla ice cream...the pepper enhances the vanilla flavor.

I am a candy traditionalist, hehehe, and licorice is only black. The red and other colors are made in the consistency of licorice candy, but it ain't licorice. Mustard! Never knew anyone that did that. Seems so weird that it just may be very good! Will try it.

One of my favorites as a kid...Choo Choo Charlie. "Charlie says love my Good N Plenty. Charlie says really rings the bell. Charlie says love my Good N Plenty. Don't know any other candy that I love so well."

Stepping away from the licorice for a minute I was disappointed with the Mrs. Prindable's pretzels. I despise coconut and s'mores and two of the pretzels in the individual boxes had these flavors. I usually buy the pretzels at Christmas so I hope they come up with a different configuration next time.

@50Mickey of course it's all personal preferences, but I canceled a pretzel set last year because eggnog was one of the flavors. Some flavors are unappealing to me.

@50Mickey and @AuntG If you have a Costco nearby, they usually sell boxes of individually wrapped Mrs. Prindable's pretzels for at least half the price of QVC. They don't come with gift boxes, but I hand them out to guests at Thanksgiving, etc. They are all just the chocolate, caramel and sprinkles.

@50Mickey Yes, they usually show up just a bit before Thanksgiving. If you don't see them then, just keep looking each week. They are in the stand-alone aisle with the specialty candies, cookies and gift baskets. In my Costco, it is an aisle that runs from behind the fresh fruit to the fish - parallel to the toys.

Thanks, I'll start looking around Thanksgiving. I like the chocolate covered pretzels and I Iike to give them in gift bags at Christmas to some of my neighbors.
