Fruit Bowl

I was feeling sentimental and thinking about Christmas when I was a kid . I remembered a big white bowl filled with tangerines, grapes and mixed nuts in the shell. I know we had fruit other times in the year m but that bowl seemed so special. Good memory. 🎄

@Mz iMac ~ Yum, they were good tasting candies...some filled with chocolate. The fruit flavors were delicious, and not too much as far as mint flavor. You can still purchase these candies (in tin) through Vermont Country Store, as well as other old time favorites.

Yes, I remember the fruit and a bowl of nuts with the old fashion nut cracker. I also remember roasting chestnuts.

I have the same memory regarding fruit at the holidays.

Normally, we had just apples and oranges...but at the holidays, mom would stop at the Italian markets in St. Louis near where she worked. She would get grapes, tangerines and even a pomegranate. Very exotic for the time, and no where near as large as the ones we see in the stores now.

I was given the task of arranging the fruit on a lovely platter. It was always something I loved doing.

We also had nuts in their shells which were ceremoniously cracked with a special little nutcracking squirrel

Such nice memories!

I remember the same wooden bowl, ever year filled with nuts and the nutcracker in the bowl. I did the same thing for a few years at Christmas but they did not get eaten so stopped....good memory!! We would get oranges in our stocking.

Yes to the tangerine! Following the Christmas Eve 7:00 pm service, Sunday School kids were sent home with a bag of goodies - containing mostly peanuts and hard candy, but also a few pieces of chocolate and one tangerine. It was a treat - the only time of the year we saw tangerines! Thanks for the memories.

My childhood Christmas memories also included a huge bowl of fruit; oranges, tangelos, tangerines, red delicious apples, bananas, big clusters of grapes, along with a big bowl of nuts. Every night around the TV, we snacked on fruit and nuts. Dad and my brothers loved the citrus fruit, Mom and I ate the bananas, apples and grapes, and we all loved the nuts.

I continue the tradition of a nut bowl on our holiday table since my DH loves cracking and eating shelled nuts. My Dad loved to sit by the table and crack nuts for himself and us kids. He would carefully crack open the walnuts, clean them out for my sister and I to make tiny cradles for tiny plastic babydolls, using cotton inside the shell. We thought they were great. So little meant so much back then.

What a precious memory about your Dad! How patient he must have been to do this for you. I can see those little nut cradles now!

My Dad liked the shelled nuts too and always made a bit of a mess on the table. I inherited his love for Brazil nuts and nuts in general. I loved hearing that cracking sound, but I haven't bought whole nuts in years. Maybe I'll pick some up this Christmas

We also had a walnut bowl of various nuts. But my German grandparents had three walnut trees that actually provided the walnuts we ate during the holidays! (Those trees were horrible . . . beautiful, but so messy in the yard and awful to mow if I remember hearing my Dad's comments.) We had baked goods rather than candy. Lots of fruits. And the German tradition of chocolate filled gold coins were always placed in everyone's stockings!

Here's my secret about those chocolate coins: If my grandpa bought them, they were usually inexpensive chocolates and tasted waxy. I didn't like them and gave them to the neighbor kids in Omaha! If my grandma bought them, they would be good chocolates. YUM! I'd pass one to each neighbor kid, but keep the rest to take home with me. LOL
My sister ate all of hers; never shared any with anyone. At least I was honest about not caring for the waxy tasting ones and offering them to other kids who didn't know about the German traditions! They learned something about our heritage.

I still keep a bowl of mixed nuts throughout the year for snacking. Grab about a 1/3 cup full periodically. Healthy and keeps my blood sugars in check. Sometimes it takes the place of a meal when added with fruit or salad. Easy living!

Mama did not do a fruit bowl but did a nut bowl. Have not thought of that in years. We used pick out the centers of the walnuts. Must have made a lot of crumbs for her clean up.

Yes, Witchy Woman, he was a very patient and loving man. I was his first daughter after four sons and then my sister came 5 years later. Needless to say, he was my hero. I remember putting my little nut cradle into the nativity under the tree , not once but repeatedly. Of course Mom wasn't too thrilled. Hope you bought yourself some if only for the memories and also they are a healthy snack. Mery Christmas.

I remember all of this....LOVED the hard candy! The scent of a freshly peeled tangerine would fill the house. I'm so blessed to have such wonderful memories.

My mom would put a large orange in the bottom of our stockings to take up space. We always got plenty of presents under the tree, so we didn't need a sock full of more stuff.

One year I remember taking all the Christmas stuff upstairs to put away under the eves at a later time. I picked up my stocking, & it was kind of heavy. I looked inside & there was my big orange, starting to mold.

Just like you Bikerbabe, I ignored my fruit.

We also just got fruit: an apple, orange and banana + whole nuts + that hard candy pictured in other posts here, in our stockings. No gifts in it. We'd grab a bottom or lid to a shirt box and dump all of it in the box lid or bottom and eat out of it until it was all gone. I especially loved that hard ribbon etc candy.
