What happened to Fall?

I went out yesterday to purchase some Fall and Thanksgiving goodies to fill a gift bag for my sister-in-law. I knew I wouldn't find a huge selection but I did expect to find some nice things for the Fall season.

Wrong.....the stores were not showing anything remotely considered Thanksgiving and everything is Christmas. There were a few clearance items that were completely picked over and something I wouldn't want to gift.

Good grief, after searching through six stores (no kidding), I decided to make it a Christmas gift bag. I am frustrated to no end. What happened to Fall?!

@Regal Bee Holidays seem more rushed each year. I recall seeing Fall items out in July. I was surprised! I'm always happy to see new items come out, but why the rush? Then often when I do need/want something it seems I can't find it! Even online. It's frustrating.

@Regal Bee I was in TJX yesterday, and they still had some very pretty fall and harvest left. They had moved it all to the front of the store, but the pieces were very nice, and they were well displayed.

Of course, Christmas had truly exploded throughout the rest of the store! LOL I thought there was a lot a few weeks ago when I was there. Apparently I had seen just the tip of the frosty glittery iceberg! Hope you'll find what you're looking for. pinky

The stores pretty much ignore Thanksgiving because there's no gift giving and no huge profits for them. What really makes me sad is that people and families are ditching Thanksgiving now too. Retailers jump into Christmas on 11/1 because they are selling things and we have to buy early but an increasing number of people are now doing the same thing.

We are being controlled by the retailers. It is disgusting. They don't need to open on Thanksgiving or stay open all night. People will shop when the stores are open. When I was young the stores were closed on Sunday so that everyone could actually relax and enjoy their families. All we seem to care about these days is taking a good selfie. Where did our values go? Why does everything have to be done at warp speed so that we barely remember it. No wonder everyone is so stressed. T:here is never time to savor the moment.

I was in Pier One a few days ao and while they have a lot of Christmas out they still had a nice selection of fall too.

i am the same way. My fall decorations stay out through Thanksgiving. Then on Black Friday, I clean house and put away fall and pull out Christmas.

@chrystaltree I feel exactly the same way. Thanksgiving is ignored for the most part and this makes me so sad. I am finding fewer things for this wonderful holiday every year!

It makes me sad, too. Thanksgiving to me is a day to say thanks for all our blessings and be w/family and friends w/out all the madness of gift giving/receiving.

You are exactly right about the retailers! The almighty dollar! Oh well, I'm old.

I agree. And around here there are ads already to "beat black friday sales". Good heavens, knock it off already!

Seasonal decor is starting to be treated like fashion used to be. I remember when swim suits would be on the racks in February and winter coats in July. I think this practice is not as popular, but we still see the spring fashion shows featuring fall collections and vice versa. I've always liked to prepare in advance, so it doesn't bother me at all. Thanksgiving is not a big holiday for decorating. Aside from some turkey and pilgrim statues, it really falls under the umbrealla of Harvest. That stuff has been out in the stores since August. Most people start decorating for Christmas the weekend after Thanksgiving. That's 3 weeks away. It seems appropriate that the stores would have out the Christmas decor at this point.

I am surprised that you could not find Thanksgiving items. You should check online as the websites I frequent offer Thanksgiving and Christmas decos. You are right though, right after Halloween, the stores go full force into Christmas trying to make that money!!!

Often people will, of course pick it up the minute they see it. That's how it gets gone before the season. "I'm going to need that." or "I didn't have that last year.".

I would love to savor fall and Thanksgiving more. When summer’s heat lasts longer I find it harder to change over. Then, I have to admit, I get excited and feel the pressure from sites such as these that display such gorgeous display of creativity and beauty. All that takes time and planning! How does one do both seasons justice?

Retail for home decor is just like fashion, it comes out early and that is when the selection is at it's best.

For fall items, that means shortly after the Fourth of July in many stores, and it builds through Labor Day, when many places are as fully stocked as they will be.

I learned early that gifting seasonal items, or choosing them for my own use required learning when certain retailers were at their peak and taking advantage of that, regardless of how early it was being offered.

It is indeed frustrating that you can't walk in a few weeks before Thanksgiving and try to build a gift basket for the host of an upcoming dinner event or something, but I guess it is what it is, we have to plan better once we know, because unfortunately, the retailers aren't going to change, and people will buy up the best things shortly after they are available, regardless of how ridiculously early it may be (and really, as much as I love and participate in the early seasonal shopping, it does indeed border on ridiculous).
