your favorite holiday tableware pattern?

I'm thinking of buying new dishes for the holidays. not necessarily fine china but something classic.

I like the Johnson Brothers Friendly Village patterns but want to look around for other ideas too.

what are your favorites?

Did you want something that you can use for both or one for thanksgiving and one for Christmas or something everyday?

@sweetee2, something that could be used for both Thanksgiving and Christmas, so, not specifically a Christmas tree theme. but something definitely wintry and holiday-ish

@sweetee2, I agree with @MariotaMurielle First you should decide if you want a festive pattern which will look appropriate for only Christmas, one which can also be used for other holiday occasions. I'm a Lenox fan and love their holly leaf pattern tablewear and accessories(first image). However, I am starting to like the idea of using Winter Greetings from November until spring everyday (image two). You can find the Lenox pieces elsewhere, but QVC offers fair pricing on the sets.

Over the past few yrs I went crazy buying new patterns of dinnerware. Before then, I had been using the same set since I moved out on my own back in the early 80's. It is a plain off-white Johnson Bros set I bought on 75% off clearance too...LOL So even through 17 yrs of marriage, I used the same set I bought back then (dinnerware set for 12 which also included 2 serving bowls and 2 platters) mind you, close to 35 yrs ago and only paid $29.99 + tax. I also never owned a set for special occassions.

Since then, this forum has enabled me to truly expand upon my horizons with threads on tablescapes a few yrs ago. Thankfully I have been able to stop the insanity!

I gravitated toward plaid and woodland type of patterns the most...

If I had to narrow it down to just one set for the holidays, it would be the 'Alpine Toile' set I got at Pottery Barn 2-3 yrs ago. DH and I enjoy the set so much, we use it all yr round! LOVE the mugs too!!!

Other patterns I love are the Better Homes & Gardens Holiday Heritage Collection (I lost count of how many pieces I collected...love!)

And I mix them all with plaid plates...like the Pottery Barn Carson Plaid.

My fave Fall/Thanksgiving set is the Asheville dinnerware from Pier 1. We use it most days of the year too...just a lovely set. We also have the mugs...also wonderful! I try and make use of most all the new additions as possible instead of just one or 2 days a year on the holidays

Like @Susan Louise, I love dinnerware. One of my favorites that she didn't mention is Lenox Winter Song. It's discontinued, but shows up on eBay. I like that it doesn't have a metal rim so it's microwave and dishwasher safe. There are so many gorgeous patterns, though, that I would have trouble choosing just one.

I have a Pfaltzgraff pattern with holly berry that I use from Thanksgiving to almost Spring. Then I have the Lenox Holiday I use during Christmas dinner and any other important dinner during the season. The Pfaltzgraff I bought at Kohl's. I love it for everyday.

i have a large selection of LENOX HOLIDAY......it is a beautiful classic.

a few years ago i also started collecting WILLIAMS SONOMA 'TWAS THE NIGHT BEFORE CHRISTMAS.

I can't even read these posts! I'm such a sucker for holiday tableware, I just can't tell you! If I had my 'druthers I'd have Lennox and Temp-tations and everything else, for that matter! Is there a gene for dishes? My dad liked to collect antique dishes too! Sadly, I have no room or money to add to my tableware. Also, there is the everpresent tisk, tisk of DH.

I love mixing Lenox with their other patterns like Tartan, Tartan Ribbons and Holiday Greetings. Use different salad plates, cups and saucers, etc.

I can so relate to collecting dishes. It was very hard to get myself to stop. The last pattern I bought pieces of was '222 Fifth Harvest Festival' a couple of yrs ago.

@Sooner Your comment about mixing the Lenox patterns reminded me that I saw a beautiful table set for Thanksgiving using Lenox Tartan, a pattern that I've always used for Christmas. I can't find the picture right now, but I was so amazed to see how well Lenox Tartan mixes with browns, russets and marigolds. It would look terrific with Valerie's new fruit and greens pieces, too!

mochahoney: I have a winter set I bought at WM that is made by Better homes and Garden. It has dear and berries, different types of winter scene a huge amount of money so I don't need to worry about using them everyday. Thanksgiving I use my China. Christmas I use dishes Christmas dishes I bought at Target many years ago. They are white with poinsettia on them. There again not a huge amount of money, so I don't have to worry with the grandkids using them.

The Holly and Ivy by portmeirion. I think it is a beautiful pattern to use all winter and has serving pieces and some bakeware to match. Great quality that does not chip, can go in the dishwasher, microwave freezer and oven. Love it!

@MariotaMurielle You chose a wonderful set...and it would work great for Fall right through the entire holiday season!

Johnson Bros make wonderful dinnerware...nice quality! I love so many similar types of transferware by Johnson Bros, Royal Stafford and the Spode Woodland (I still would love a variety of the dinner plates...like the 'pheasant' design...oy!

I do have 4 dinner plates of each of the following:

Johnson Bros 'Old Britian Castles'

Royal Stafford 'Christmas Eve'

Royal Stafford 'Christmas Home'

Here is one of the Spode 'Woodland' dinner plates I'd love to have...

@Susan Louise, that Spode Woodland pattern would look pretty combined with the Johnson Brothers Friendly Villiage patterns. it's beautiful.

Very simple, somewhat plain and seasonal without screaming Christmas... I like 222 Fifth's Winter Cardinal pattern...
