Do You Offer Fresh Fruit After a Holiday Meal?

I was just thinking about how much many of us don't eat the way we used to, and thinking fresh fruit after a big meal sounds good to me. Especially sweet/tart apples and grapes, maybe some pears?

Anyone doing this??? Or will I be shamed for even mentioning it?

I always have some fruit like different colored grapes or apple slices on my cheese platter that is eaten before the big meal as part of the apps.

We do not serve fruit for dessert. Desserts are plentiful and we mostly are too full to eat them all.

When I was a kid, we had fruit every night after dinner, except for holiday dinners. My father was big on this. We had many fruit trees and grape vines on our property.

@Sooner No shame from me! The closest thing to the apples...is an apple crisp. 😊

My little grandkids don't care for pumpkin pie...so they always request my standby. We always have a bowl of green grapes too. I like the idea of some pears as well.

Unfortunately, I'm neither a fruit eater nor a fruit lover. I wouldn't even think of serving it after a meal to guests. I wish I could get on the "health" train, but I will be thinking about cheesecakes, pies and tarts for desserts.

@Sooner maybe a mixed berry compote over meringe...like a Pavolva. Super light and you can use light whipped cream.( yum.

Or a citrus fruit segments with coconut ( yum)

Not sure if you having guests. I do think they would be disappointed if there isn't a pie or cheesecake. Just my opinion.

@Sooner I always serve fresh fruit salad with dessert. It has apples, mandarin oranges, pineapple chunks, mini marshmallow, pecans. Some choose to have just the fruit instead of pie.

In my family, we have usually had fresh fruit at our breakfast meals.

After a holiday meal, fruit will be served in pie form!

My Italian Mom always served Tangerines. Pomegranates, Grapes along with Roasted Chestnuts in season. Also she cut up Fennel which helps with digestion & helps freshen breath. Of course there was all kinds of homemade Italian pastries, pies & lemon ice or Gelato & she served coffee or Espresso. This was a normal thing with my Italian Family especially for the Holidays.

In my family we always have a big bowl of pineapple chunks available after a big meal. It is usually brought out during dessert but sometimes is put out with the appetizers.

@LizzieInSRQ Pavolva is wonderful! I haven't had it in a long time and think I can con my hubby into making the shells!

It will be just the two of us, has been for 15 years now, but we can make some any time. Funny but we were talking about it a few days ago.

Guests at my house always know to go with the flow. I once served dark chocolate pot de creme and pears poached in red wine syrup and it was my favorite of all time! They scraped the plates and I thought one guy was going to just turn the plate up and lick it! We were laughing at him.

To me, Thanksgiving is the one day you forget about the healthy stuff & go for the bad goodies. Most pies have fruit in them. If you have fruit in your house, you could offer it along with whatever deserts your serving.

You won't get any shame from me @Sooner! You make me think of sitting around the holiday tables with my big Italian family and fruit and nuts were always served after the Thanksgiving meal. We never really did "Italian pastries" as many people think Italians must do...in my family, those were mostly enjoyed at weddings and at Easter time. But we did have desserts also, fruit pie, pumpkin pie, and my cousin would always make her signature (delicious!!) cheesecake.

I didn't grow up eating dessert after dinner, not that it was a "no-no" or anything, we just loved fresh fruit, and often that's what we had. So I like cookies and a piece of fruit pie occasionally, as a snack with a tea maybe. But rarely eat a dessert right after dinner...too full. Occasionally in a restaurant if I split it or have a small serving of gelato or I do love some chocolate mousse, if I've left room for it.

To this day I'm a big fruit lover.

Pomegranites were big in our family this time of year; I bought one the other day. Grapes also would come out with the nuts. Nuts in a shell...everyone sat around cracking nuts and talking.

Thanksgiving is the one day that I eat a slice of pumpkin and pecan pie, so no fruit for me on thanksgiving but I love some delicious fruit in the summer- watermelon ( my favorite) sweet peaches, strawberries and rainier cherries and in the winter a really sweet orange and juicy pear.
