My venture into uncharted As Is Waters--Dooney Aubrey

You can blame it on post-op medis. While recovering from oral surgery, I decided to order an Aubrey as is satchel in bone. They offered a EZ pay option and I thought what the heck? I might hit the purse lotto.

Well, yesterday I trekked down to the Post Office to retrieve my package and I was without my packing tape. So I open up the package to a beautiful leather smell--which sounded promising. There it was, folded in bag--which I did expect. No storage bag, but who cares? It's better store these in light-colored pillowcases.. There was a key fob, but no pouch. Ok. I expected that.

But it was missing the shoulder strap. The weird thing: this bag is too big for the strap they were supposed to provide. With As is, it is a gamble. But not all As Is items are created equal. I think the price should have been cheaper, because it was missing the detachable strap. For this bag--whether it is meant to be with it or not--a shoulder strap is not an "accessory." I don't care what Sue Clifton tells you, that keyfob is not a $30 value.

The bag is sitting there. It's a shame. I love the bag. It si gorgeous in bone. I think the bone may be prettier than its siibling in optic white.. I am trying to figure out if I would use it without the strap anyway. The bone is not that yellowy bone, but the pretty classic soft white that pairs well with the brown trim.

I could not bring myself to pay nearly $350 for the full price model, knowing that it may have been used--and perhaps missing parts.

The As Is concept is fine. You sometimes get lucky. But in terms of price, no one size fiits all here.

I've bought a lot of 'as is' Dooneys and overall, have had good luck.

My last purchase came with no strap at all! You can't carry it!

Since then, another poster mentioned in her review of the same bag, that she bought the same DB 'as is' bag TWICE and both times she got no strap at all either.

No quality control on returns, IMO.

I remember awhile back someone posted they had bought an "as is" Dooney and the previous purchaser had cut the handle straps off (leaving only the shoulder strap! But it had been accepted for return, and then sent out to the poster as an "as is" purchase. Some shoppers need to be banned!

FYI
If a bone Aubrey shows up, it is probably my return.
Again, no dust bag, pouch or shoulder strap. $270 Is too much for that. $200 would have been acceptable.

JavaQueen you may want to check out Ilovedooney site to see if they have this

style/color handbag. The prices there are usually much less than here.

I just ordered a pebble leather crossbody - I should receive it in the next few days. It was over $50 less and they had the color I wanted!

That really is a shame... I'm not buying bags from QVC these days, nor am I buying Dooney, but at one time I was relying on the 'as-is' section for a number of Dooney, as well as other bags, and usually had decent luck... I had a few real stinkers along the way too... I remember one in particular, a darling mustard satchel that arrived without the pouch and with one of the metal feet missing... I'm not a huge fan of metal feet, but to have one missing was the deal breaker more so than the missing supposedly free accessory... I always planned to reorder that mustard bag, but never did...

My heartburn with 'as-is' is I've never felt the discounts were deep enough. Comparing these prices to QVC's actual outlet prices and other outlet stores nets me the opinion that they could do better, especially since they liken their 'as is' section to being their 'online outlet'... I'd also add that when selling items 'as is', they really could do with vastly reduced shipping and yet many times, there it is... that full twelve bucks to ship... And yes, whether buying supposedly 'new' or 'as-is' their quality control of returns that get re-sold needs work.

I have had good luck buying as is but it seems now a days customers are sending more & more back ruined or with missing parts. It's a shame - really these people are just crooks.

As far as I am concerned, cutting off the straps makes the item "DAMAGED" not "As Is." The Q should be ashamed for sending out a bag in that condition.

I agree. "As-is" shouldn't mean that an item is essentially ruined, dirty, stained, torn, broken, faded and so on... Minor flaws are one thing, obvious problems mean it's ready for the trash heap.

I think returns that are damaged or missing parts should NOT receive any refund at all! Or perhaps half at the most. That would put an end to the theft which is what it usually is. Those little cosmetic bags might even show up on eBay!

I am lucky enough to live near an outlet and I can look over a bag before paying less than half the on air price. That's reasonable for a bag missing accessories. Maybe even missing the extra strap if you don't use those or already have other Dooney bags with spare straps.

But when you have to pay to ship it only to find out important things are missing it isn't worth it. Sorry that happened to some of you

I once checked out D&B on Ebay. They were from a QVC closeout pallet buyer. Bags were a scandal, an absolute scandal. Stained, smelling of smoke, food stuck to lining, etc. Yes, some shoppers should be banned. As for me if I can't afford the full price I'll stick with my old bags. I hate feeling like I got gypped.

I still like that bag and kinda-sorta wish I had bought one. The problem was I wasn't wacky about any of the colors, nor was I crazy about the tassel zipper pull. I see they have come out with a few new colors, but those aren't floating my boat either. I do like the dome shape, and I like the single flap pocket on the front.

Truthfully, i was sad. I thought it a lovely, functional bag--if they had sent the strap. Since I had other Dooneys, I could have made it work with another strap. But after tax and shipping, $271. At that price, one doesn't make it "work." I think it worth getting. Right now I really don't want to shell out close to $350 for one.
