Purse straps

Is anyone else bothered by purse straps that are adjustable? I just cannot stand the overlapping part. I hate it. Why can't they just make it a standard length shoulder strap and make the second strap that some designers give you, the adjustable one?

I always want an adjustable strap on my bags and I would not buy a bag that does not offer it. So I guess we're all different.

I am 5'1". I prefer cross body bags. If the strap is not adjustable, the bag hangs well below my finger tips banging against my thigh.

I have almost the same problem with shoulder bags. Not everyone is the same height or even average height. I am sure taller women have the reverse problem.

I have no issue with adjustable straps. I actually prefer them. I also appreciate them in the wintertime. I can wear my bag with a heavy winter coat and with a quick adjustment shorten the strap to wear with a thin tee shirt in the summer.

I think the adjustable strap is preferred by most people and that's what is going to control this issue.

@snipsnapsnur. How about sticking some Velcro on the strap flap to hold it down?

No, I just don't like the bulkiness of the doubled fabric part. Then, if you want to wear it on the opposite side of your body, the doubled part is in the front. Nope, just something that bugs me. I do not like crossbody bags anyway because I'm only 5'1', so if the strap can be made to be a shoulder bag, nooooooo, way too much material, lol.

At 5'2" I need an adjustable strap. Otherwise the purse hangs waaay too low on me. So I say a big NO to doing away with adjustable straps.

I've bought a couple of Hobo International bags and many of there bags are one size. No adjustability. I've either had to not buy the bag or spend more money and time taking it to a shoe repair shop. No thanks. I'm short and want to be able to choose my length.

Because that would cost more money and raise the price of the item to give us 2 straps.

We are all different shapes and sizes, so adjustable makes the most sense.

I also will not buy one that is Not adjustable.

There are many brands that give 2 straps. I won't buy an adjustable strap bag, lol. Different strokes for different folks!

There are many "standard" strap lengths, and many different preferences. Straps come in 5 inch, 9 inch, 11 or 13 inch and 20 inch straps. I'm sure there are more, but you get the idea.

IMO, if a manufacturer makes more than one strap on a handbag, they should ALL be removable and interchangeable.

Having the little 5 inch straps women put in the crook of their elbow, with a longer, non-removeable strap dangling is what police call a purse snatchers' favorite.

I've mentioned this before, but it bears repeating:

Years ago my employer had the Beverly Hills Police Dept come in and give their Women's Safety lecture.

They strongly emphasized to never carry a handbag with a short strap and a dangling shoulder strap.

Picture this: A woman is walking down the street with her handbag in the crook of her elbow and longer strap dangling. A purse snatcher comes up behind her, shoves her HARD in her back, causing her to fall forward.

Instinctively, she puts out her hands to break her fall as she hits the ground. The crook slides the purse off her extended arm and runs like heck. By the time the woman has gotten up, the crook is two blocks away.

If both her phone and keys, in addition to her wallet, are in that bag, they have what they need to drive to the location on her wallet and do a quick break-in.

In the meantime, the woman has no phone, no car keys, and everything in her wallet is up for grabs.

This is why they also recommend you never put your keys in your purse ... put them in your pocket. If your purse is stolen, at least you can drive home and call your credit card companies.

(Having pepper spray or even a gun in the purse are pointless because the element if surprise allows no time to access them).

Ever since that lecture, I never buy slacks that don't have pockets, and my keys are always in my pockets.

When I am walking to my car my key or fob is in my hand, always. I learned that at the first safety class I ever attended, and I have my phone in my hand or pocket. If you love a bag but not the strap just take it to a cobbler, he can adjust it for you.

@snipsnapsnur I so agree. My everyday, small (since I had a large leather Dooney) black MZ Wallace bag came with 3 straps: A braided chain/leather, an all leather narrow cross body, and then a wider adjustable should or cross body.

I had the leather one shortened by the shoemaker who cut off and finished the end of the leather one (3 inches) that I mostly wear crossbody crossbody.

@snipsnapsnur I know what you mean, and I don't like that either. An adjustable strap is one thing; there should be a way, though, to secure any "overhang." I think that looks sloppy.
