American Leather Handbags

Has anyone noticed the smell on these handbags after receiving? I had ordered a TSV Crossbody in Vachetta several months ago and noticed the smell after receiving it, I only used the bag once because of the smell, I'm still deciding to keep it or donate.

After catching a bit of the American Leather show yesterday, I was interested in a shoulder bag A639937 in the Vachetta color, I was reading the reviews all were positive except for one who stated that the smell was awful! The awful smell experience is what's holding me back from ordering. Has anyone else had any experience with the smell too? Wondering if the smell is because of the particular dye color. TIA

Sorry, I have 6 bags all different colors and none smelled when I got them and do not smell now.

It would be a bummer since I have been using American Leather exclusively for a long time now.

The TSV was in the Vachetta, I have not placed an order for the one I was interested in yet but the color of choice would be Vachetta, that's why I was wondering if it's the dye used for the color (Vachetta) that is giving off that awful smell. I was just curious if anyone else has had the same experience with this brand or color.

@SoCal Bred. I've had handbags with a bad smell which I think is probably caused by dyes. I mix up a spray of Don Aslett's XO deodorant (Amazon) and lightly spray it a few times. You could also try that new product, Poopf, that's available at grocery stores. It claims to remove any odor.

I have 3 American Leather Co bags, a vachetta, cafe latte and vanilla, also have vanilla and vachetta wallets.

None smell except of leather.

Will have to try Poopf on jewelry I receive that can have an odor.

Setting in sunshine after cleaning with Windex sometimes works but ones with leather cords are harder to take out the scent.

I have heard the smell on products are the insecticides/ rodenticides they use pre-shipping. I have ordered several and not noticed any strong smell -

@Skyegirl21. I've gotten that musty odor frequently on denim pants and I remove it the same way I described above very effectively. Sometimes it's so strong I have to store the item in the garage until I can "process" it.

@rockygems123. I once got a Susan Graver pendant on a braided leather necklace that had a strong odor. I sprayed with with my Don Aslett solution and it was fine afterwards. I think Poopf should work.

I do have a bottle of the Poopf that I picked up a few months ago that I forgot I had and will try it on the crossbody bag I purchased several months ago. Thanks for the tip.

Edit to add:

I had the purse covered and hanging in the closet and when I took it out to spray it with the Poopf the bad smell was completely gone! All I smell is the leather of the material. Good deal, but I will keep the Poopf in mind for future use.😊

I have heard that the huge shipping containers on those cargo ships from China are sprayed with insecticide, and that is what causes the horrible odor. I once had a bag (I think it was a Dooney) that had that smell, and I had to put orange peels inside for about a month. Finally, the odor was gone.

I ordered the TSV American Luca Crossbody in Vachetta & also purchase the Shouder strap which took it up a level. Luckily did not have an ordor. It smelled of leather but its my only bag purchase from Al.

I got my first American Leather bag a couple of months ago. The color is Cardamom, a yellow-green. It’s an unusual looking bag, but I really like it. The leather is very, very soft and it smells only of high-quality leather. No funky odor, so maybe it is the dye used for the Vachetta.

American Leather Co. Heritage Leather Zip Top Bucket Hobo

I have never liked their designs or hardware. But this bag has my name all over it!

They upgraded their hardware and the stitching look to their leather on this bag looks amazing. This is their "Heritage" line, so I guess that's the reason for the upgraded hardware and very supple leather. The strap is little wider than their usual ones as well. Getting the teal (a very green color), the red or eggplant.
