Selling Dooney's

I have two large Dooney's that I no longer use, and likely will never pull out again.

Both are satchel style...one quilted black with tan trim, and the other a madras plaid coated cotton. I carried a larger bag when I worked and now, they are just overwhelming (currently using a Ruby style).

Was thinking of donating them for a silent auction, but wondered if they are worth selling. I would still donate the money, but curious if you can expect anything to sell used bags.

I normally would not consider it, but they are just taking up space in my closet and I'd rather have them rehomed

Silent auction? It depends on the auction, Dooney's are nice leather bags but they are not status bags. They aren't in the LV or Prada world. Perhaps you could auction them if they are brand new, with the tags still on them. If you have carried the bags, it would be better to donate them to a one of those women's charities that provide clothing for women entering the workforce. They always need handbags in addition to clothing for work. Or you can find someone you know and give the bags to them.

After a little thought, I agree with you that they need to be pristine for the silent auction.

I've offered "new without tags" handbags before and they sell.

Cannot blame people for that.

I just added two of D's big heavy leather bags to a pile of other donations to the local mission. I wouldn't find a buyer in a life time....so with their 17 stores somebody will buy them and the mission will get the money for good work.

I have (3) Dooney's I no longer use (due to the weight of the hardware). But these are almost $160.00 each, and by no means cheap. I've only used them a few times and they're like new. They're a little too $$ to donate. I'd sell them on Poshmark.

Coming from someone who has always wanted a Dooney, but never could afford one, I'd be interested in what you are selling and for how much? Is that against the rules here? Thank you

Have you heard of D & B trade-in program? I've traded in about 5 of them over the years and purchased replacements. For me, it was better than selling.

If your trade-in handbag has a retail price of $500, they give you half of that in the form of a credit to purchase another D & B product.

Yes, it's against the Community Standards here.

ETA: I wish it weren't, I have a ridiculous amount of Dooney bags of all shapes and sizes in leather from when I worked in the Corporate world.

I had to retire due to health issues unexpectedly and many of mine have never been carried and still have tags, registration cards and receipts.

I did take a lot of the brand new ones to a consignment shop, but they didn't want to pay much for them, so I decided to just dole them out to BFF on her b'day, Christmas, etc.

I would gladly give you a few if it was allowed!

You will be offered credit for half the current retail price of that item, regardless of its condition, to apply toward a replacement item of equal or greater value. Cannot be applied to sale prices. The original item will not be returned to you. Once you have authorized a replacement, the item will be destroyed.

I had not decided on an amount, but I guess it doesn't matter since we don't want to get banned.

Like you, IG, I'm a "giveaway" person, not much of a seller. I was just thinking I could raise some money for one of the rescues I help.

Found a lot of the "ants" plaid on Poshmark, most for $50 or less. Same for the black quilted, which I forgot is nylon, not leather. There was an identical one in pink, and it was $50.

So, it seems neither bag is worth much.

As to an exchange program, I'd rather give them away, but it certainly makes sense, especially if you want another handbag.

If you check the I Love Dooney website, they frequently have great sales on their bags -- well under the original costs.

You could also sell them at a resale shop and donate the money. I have sold mine at a local resale shop. We have several in the Phoenix area.

Or you could donate them to a shelter for abused women. Alot of the time when the women leave an abusive situation....they only have the clothes on their backs. They need everything for a fresh start. A nice handbag would be a lovely addition. It doesn't change the negative they have been through...but it helps give something positive for the future.

Just recently I looked on the Dooney site to see if there was still mention of the replacement program, but I didn't see anything about it.

I was about to call and ask their CS, but realized the bag I want to wean from my closet wasn't top of the line to begin with and getting half of its value would still leave me spending well into 3 figures for a new Dooney.

There would have been a time in my life to do that but this year my decision was to donate my bag and hope 2 good things happen: one, someone gets a good buy for themselves and two, my charity does their usual good work with the dollars they earn.

What i do with all my good as new stuff i no longer want/need is offer them to the young people i work with. Remember when you were in your twenties and starting out. I always come home empty handed and they are very happy.

I'm retired, but that's a great idea. Most of the gals I knew when working carried very expensive bags (even when they could not afford them.

I was always the one carrying the Walmart models

I would love to gift or give them to someone, and will continue to look for the best way to find them good homes

Thanks for this information. I have Florentine Dooneys that just take up space in the closet. I'm going to check into this..
