Curious About Auditioning to be a QVC Model

Not that I'm model material anymore, but I'm very curious about the process of becoming a model for QVC.

What do interviews consist of?

Why do we sometime go for many days/months without seeing a model and then they suddenly show up again.

QVC uses models from JTA (Joy Talent Agency). They are not QVC employees.

JTA has a website you can go for more information.They are located near Philadelphia, PA.

To be honest I think it looks like a very boring job. At least modeling clothes anyway. Just standing there and pivoting a leg and turning around (some don’t even do that) and of course smiling I would go crazy. They also get caught between a host and vendor talking over each other. I think I’d rather find something where I can use my brain. Some of them have been with QVC for years so it must pay well but no thank you.

Honestly, this may be the perfect second job that doesn't require "brain work". Or not? I'm not sure how much of what is presented is the work of the models and how much is a behind-the-scenes stylist setting up outfits for them.

Really, I'm thinking I'd hate to have to put on and take off multiple outfits in a two hour period! Those models have stamina, imo!

@timeless I think it’s behind the scenes stylists helping them change quickly. Some of them work hard and long hours. Katie, Crystal, Jaime and the one who models on the Graver shows who has horses - they are all good at showing the clothes. I just think it would be boring but that’s just me.

Joy was a previous QVC model for many years. She had the best hair and lips! Seems her Talent Agency is quite lucrative.

@kittycatmeow I remember Joy doing the Bare Minerals shows, and Leslie saying she had heart-shaped lips.

I think the QVC models must have "the Patience of Job" to smile through and put up with the antics of certain Hosts.

I think they must get paid very well too, because some of them have been around for ages, and I'm sure they could have found other "assignments," if they truly hated working at QVC.

Back in the 80's when I was a young teen, there was a modeling school called Barbizon. I'm not sure if it's still around, but back then they had ads to recruit new models.

I called them and they said they would have to talk to my mom.

I don't recall all of what happened, but I do remember the look on her face as she was speaking with them on the phone.

My dream of becoming a model never came to fruition. Not sure what was said by them, but mom said no.

IDK, being a model whether at Q or otherwise must be harder than it looks. And the confidence you have to have, while people judge you intentionally, or not. You walk out and you know the material is scratchy, or the fit is too tight but that is how the "stylist" put you out there, or just having a really bad bloated day but slap that smile on and do your thing. Makeup would be a little more fun, I love a "before and after", however I think my skin would be a disaster with all the beauty buildup.

It is nice seeing Kate back in the clothing rotation back with LOGO and DB at least, and I have noticed Jill back in the makeup group, but I never see Alicia anymore. It's funny, I have never seen Jill model clothes "live" but over the years they have shown her as a pretaped demo for the website that is sometimes played esp on Q2 when they usually have no models.

Several models also do outside QVC work.

Deanna Fontanez models for ads for Boscovs, Pocono Mountains, etc.

Unless they get enough work, it probably wouldn't be worth it for those who need a steady income.

Hours are irregular, and I'd bet for some it could be quite a drive.

NYC fashion house runway models aren't supposed to ever smile, as the facial expression would detract from the moment the garment is being shown up and down the runway.

QVC wants its models to smile? Sure, they are family. lol

Too bad you never found out.

I recall those ads, and today the idea of soooo many models in demand that they had to open a school to accommodate whoever the "graduates" would work for.

Back around that time, I recall ads for schools that would teach young women how to become "stewardesses".

Hey, there didn't seem to be a lot of life options back then .... teacher, nurse or mommy.

Well QVC and HSN do not only use Joy Talent Agency, they also use Reinhard Modeling Agency, Click Talent Agency, Main Line Talent Agency, and a few others as well. All are based in the Philadelphia area. Some of the Florida models from HSN come up every now and then such as Dagmara, Angie, Simi, and Winnetka and they go through the Joy Agency. I think they are paid fairly well. Some only do the modeling part-time; a few are nurses such as Amy, etc.

I sent away to Barbizon for information too. I think I was 13. I remember the pamphlet said something like "how to be a model...or just look like one ". I walked around the house for a while with a book on my head, but that's as far as I got.

I thought to become a "stewardess" at one time since I loved flying.

I recall being on a PSA flight to San Diego (when I was around 5 or so) and the crew (according to my grandma) lifted me up in the aisle and I said, "Up, Up and Away With TSA!!!"

OOoops. LOL

I paid attention to the commercials showing planes/stewardesses back then, but not the airline, apparently!

We must have both been reading the back pages of Seventeen Magazine ... or was it some other mag?

It was a long time ago, but I seem to think I recall ads sort of like the Barbizon Hotel for Women in NYC.

Where young women would stay if visiting NYC to be safe and preserve their reputations.

(Or perhaps I'm misconstruing something from many decades ago?)
