What is that odor on Renee's jeans?

I have 2 pair of Renee's jeans WWC and they both have this horrible chemical type smell on them. It took a long time to get the smell out of one of the pair and I may send the other back for that reason. Of course I washed the one pair and hung it out to air but it still has a slight odor...

I don't do FB or any of the social media. Has anyone read any other complaints about this and what is the cause. None of my other clothing from QVC has this odor.

Probably the dye. Try rinsing in white vinegar.

I once worked by a dye house for a large denim manufacturing company, temporary Hq while our large building was being completed. I was pregnant during that time and the dye smell was horrific. I had hyperemesis gravidarum during that pregnancy and I was sick until around noon everyday, not only from the HEG but from the dye smell.

I have smelled denim that is done in China and it is the same exact smell of that dye house. I will never forget it and for that reason, I have to buy Ann Taylor jeans that don't seem to have that smell.

When I think of the infestation of some of the insects we have in this country that purportedly came from China [namely Spotted Lantern Fly]

I then picture items being shipped from China in those large pallets.

The ship that went off course and crashed into the Francis Scott Key bridge was laden with thousands of pounds of goods being shipped into the USA.

ETA: so wondering if the dye odor on denim might be this?

Also, I simply cannot wear clothing (or use towels/ sleep on sheets) without washing first. My skin reacts with a rash when I wear without washing first.

It has occurred to me that they must use very strong chemicals to kill insects that may infest clothing while in shipping.

@Beammeupscotty It's chemicals that aren't good for us going into our largest organ (our skin). Not sure if all the washing & rinsing will get rid of the chemicals depending how ingrained they are in the fabric.

@Beammeupscotty. That is the spray they use on containers from Asia that permeates some fabrics in a shipment. It's very hard to remove; washing and airing won't do it. I use a commercial deodorant. I'd send them back.

Thank you all! I think I will take the advice and send them back. Never had this problem in the past with her things. Or anyone elses from QVC and don't they all come from China? I'm inclined to agree it's the dye but don't want to take the chance. Wonder if I can send back the other pair since I already washed them and can still detect the smell. Calling customer service and if they won't let me return the washed pair I will try the vinegar rinse. But definitely sending back the other pair.

Huh, I have a closet full of WCC pants, tops, maxis.....and have never run across this problem! Wearing a top right now and had to sniff myself, LOL, Nope, I'm good.

You can return ANY item within 30 days regardless if they have been washed.

Mark them defective.

You don't need to ask permission....just watch to make sure you get a full refund as defective.

The returns dept is not very accurate even if you write a GIANT note!

If I receive anything with an unpleasant odor it will go back to whomever I bought it from, and it will absolutely be marked as defective. At the cost of things today, clothing or otherwise, I will not pay for shipping for a product that is unusable. And this would be unusable to me.

@Beammeupscotty You can return ANY item within 30 days...no matter if it's been washed/worn/whatever. Like someone else said, mark the form as "defective", then make sure you get the full refund (including shipping both ways).

Ugh, it can permeate your whole house with that odor. It is formaldehyde to keep the bugs away on the ships that transport from overseas.

Please return as I got one from Diane Gilman years back and boy I washed and washed and still stunk. That was the end of that.

Well, its either the dye or the insecticide they spray in the shipping containers. Im leaning towards the insecticide.

I had the same odor on a recent pair of Kim Gravel jeans. They were on a good clearance sale so I want to keep them but the smell was terrible. Kind of a moldy/chemical smell? First I washed them in soap but the smell lingered. Then I soaked them in vinegar for several wash cycles and finally dried them out in the sun. The smell is mostly gone. I have sent a pair of jeans back though where the smell lingered no matter what I did.

Yes...now I do remember an appliance I purchased many years ago...the handles were rubber

the thing smelled like petrochemicals of some sort...like decaying tires.

I even stored it outside for at least six months

the smell was still present and it got tossed!

I did end up sending both pair back today. One pair I had washed trying to get out the smell and it was better but still there.

I just had to return a pair of Susan Graver jeans for this very reason. Even after washing the smell stil permeated the jeans. I hate to think of the chemicals that must be the culprit. To spend $65 for an item this is unacceptable. I sent them back. I've not had a problem with Kim Gravel's jeans. Such a shame - I really loved the cut/fit.
