Tax Free items

My state has tax free clothing this weekend. I placed a clothing order today and i was charged tax and was wondering if this is an error.

Are states who are waiving taxes on clothing being charged tax while shopping for clothing on QVC?

We are also tax free. I ordered earlier and was NOT charged tax. Call CS.....they're great. :-)

If there's no warehouse or outlet or store in your state you're not supposed to be taxed on any item. Tax is generally waived if you're shipping out of state. In pa, for example, we would be taxed on applicable items because we have QVC stores here. North Carolina would be the same because of the warehouse. But, say Iowa (assuming QVC has no on-ground presence) should be tax free to ship there, I belive!

They used to have a call center and outlet store here but both are now gone.

Wonder how that works in that situation.

If your state is waiving the tax for the kinds and prices of the items you ordered, it doesn't matter whether they have a physical basis in your state or not.

I agree that you should call CS because maybe your state didn't let QVC know what's going on. I doubt it's QVC's job to check, but it's your money, so you certainly can ask.

All the states use different limits and different dates, so they may not put everything into their computers only to have to reprogram them all over again in a few days. I would call, and if CS is busy - it's easy to leave a phone on speaker and do something else for a few minutes while I wait.

yes, agreed. It would definitely be waived for a special tax free weekend in your state or city. But even if that special is not going on, you still shouldn't be paying tax normally if there is no brick & mortar presence at that locale!

As long as there is a physical presence in the state, they must charge. Since many call center agents now work from home, and since many states now require online retailers to collect tax, I would say that QVC collects tax for most states.

For those who have a problem paying tax, it is important to keep in mind that this is now QVC's choice, and QVC does not keep the tax. They only charge what your state requires.

@J9True - but OP was asking specifically about the special tax week in her state - and then QVC could be next door to her and she shouldn't be paying the tax unless there are some other provisions in her state's law.

I know those tax-free laws differ from state to state. When I was shopping more than I do now, I often bought and saved during NY's back to school tax free. In Florida I cannot use it because what we're allowed to buy tax free is nothing I buy.

I live in Iowa and I pay tax in every item I purchase from QVC! This weekend is a tax free day in Iowa for clothing items under $100 so I would not pay tax today, but that is the only day.

@KYToby When you don't know what you're talking about, you need to refrain from answering. FYI: Many states, mine included, have a tax-free week-end right before school starts where clothing up to $100, computers and school supplies are not taxed. None of my clothing purchases this week-end have been taxed.

I went to a local TV station's website where they had the rules posted.

Clothing $60 and under are tax exempt including purchases made online.

The item I bought was $62......ugh!

I may have to rethink my purchase!

I used to work in Florida for a particular theme park. If a guest wanted to ship an item out of state, we were not permitted to charge tax for that purchase because it was an out of state purchase. The only state excepted was California because the sister park operated in that state and one of the Carolinas because of a time share resort there.

same thing with Amazon. We used to not pay tax in pa because there were no operations here. Then they opened a warehouse and we got screwed.

I live in New York State and I am charged tax on all my on line purchases. I can drive an hour and be in Pa. Friends and I go there several times per year for kids, etc. The money saved pays for gas, lunch and we still are ahead. Also we have a great day of fun together. The men all hold the fort at home where needed. Two of us are widows.

This weekend is also the Tax Free Weekend for Texas so I have been taking advantage of it. Fortunately for us, it's clothing under $100. But on HSN, I am not charged tax at all. Only at QVC.

I have read on the boards that because QVC did their 50 state tour they are required to collect tax for every state. Have no idea if that's correct and of course, it doesn't apply when a state has a tax free weekend.
