Questions for the Moderators About Allowed Topics

I'm not trying to start a firestorm or challenge the moderators' authority, but I have a question that I'd really like answered.

I noticed this past weekend a couple of inocuous threads wishing other posters a "Happy Easter". Both of the threads I saw (briefly) were very quickly deleted on the grounds that they "might be deemed religious".

However, all week long every host and every vendor on air has been wishing callers and generally all customers a "Happy Easter", a blessed "Good Friday", etc..

If the hosts and vendors are able to wish customers that, what was wrong with some posters wishing others the same? (I could understand locking them, if the threads had become contentious, but they hadn't.)

And does this mean that come next Christmas, we won't be able to wish each other a "Merry Christmas" either on the same grounds?

Seriously, I'm just wondering at the justification for this. It seemed to take moderation a step too far. I'm very glad to have the moderators here, but I honestly thought this was imposing a double standard. Perhaps the hosts should be advised not to mention religious holidays either?

@Venezia You can wish someone a "Merry Christmas" or "Happy Easter", but we ask that you do not begin or participate in a religious "discussion". For example, rather than the host simply wishing you a "Merry Christmas", she decides to discuss Christianity or a specific religious denomination. We do not allow those types of discussions on the forums. I hope this information is helpful.

It ought to be clear to everyone that what happens and what's allowed on these boards is quite different from what goes on on-air. There is not the opportunity for hurt feelings or disagreements, name calling or fights on-air. A person on the boards would never get away with the things Shawn has said when she gets spiritual or what some vendors say when peddling religious oriented items.

Two different worlds with differing rules; the boards and on-air.

The Happy Easter was deleted too soon and before anything had even developed. As Wayne, the Mod, has said.

I've had a post jumped on and deleted way too soon before anything had developed. It was said that it may become argumentative. This is not a good thing. Actually most things may or may not become argumentative. Even if I said the sky was blue today,...

Please leave it remain, especially in one expressing happiness to another, until and if something may develop.

This has been discussed and people do it so many times yet people feign innocence and cry why this?, why that?

@Wayne-QVC - Thank you for the reply. I understand that, but these two threads that I saw really had nothing more than a couple of posts wishing each other a "Happy Easter". That's the only reason I asked - because I thought they were jumped on too soon.

But again - thank you for your reply. It's nice to know that we can ask civil questions and get an explanation. And thank you to all the mods who keep these boards civil!

@Melania - No, I won't just leave. I asked a civil question and one of the moderators was kind enough to answer it.

We don't need such a black and white attitude. I follow the rules, but I also feel I have the right to ask a question about something that I thought was uncalled for. If we aren't even allowed to ask a question in a polite manner...then, yes, at that point, I would leave!

Thankfully, the moderators are better than that.

The moderation on this Board has always been crazy. Not the MODERATORS, the rules of moderating. Don't misunderstand the 2.

It would help for posters to be able to ignore posters and banned posters should not be allowed to sign up for a new name and come back and start their c%r%a%p again.

It can be done. The software can be programmed and the banning could be by ISP address. Just saying.

@software - Yes, I agree with this. We used to have the ignore button before the new format was introduced, so I don't know why that couldn't be brought back.

It's been explained several times by several posters (me and others) over many months that while banning a (single, totally identifiable to a specific customer) IP address used to be the quick, easy, invariably successful solution, it just isn't any more.

Few people have static IPs - they change from sign-on to sign-on. One morning it shows a poster in a general area where they actually live, the next day it might show them in the same state but hundreds of miles from where they are, and another time it shows them halfway across the country from where they actually are.

In addition, the use of free or paid proxy servers is common - one purpose being to specifically hide where and who you are.

So, while "an" IP address can be blocked, that doesn't necessarily stop anyone.

@Moonchilde is correct. Our IP address (Internet Protocol) isn't always static. (ISP is our Internet Service Provider, not the address of our connection.) Some posters do have one that doesn't change (static) but others don't. And, as an example, we might connect with new IP addresses if we use a public WiFi or cellular connection. QVC actually does block IP addresses, but it's useful only in a limited way. But, regarding the other issue, they really don't seem to notice as much as we posters do when someone who has been banned creates a new account and resumes posting. I suppose the only recourse is to report that person to the QVC Social Team and explain what you've noticed and why it's a problem.

The company managing the forums (Lithium) no doubt has software packages offering the "ignore user" feature. QVC evidently chose a more basic platform. The "ignore" option has been requested since the new Community launched in June 2015, along with requests for less-archaic emoticons. These requests have been left unanswered. That, in itself is the answer, in my opinion.

I also feel that no answer is the answer. At a certain point it's just logical. The moderators don't have an answer - at least, one that they are permitted to share with us. So continuing to ask why/why not isn't going to get a wanted answer just because it keeps getting asked.
