I love reading posts like this one! While working, I would read at least two books per week, catching moments here and there to do so - on the train, before work and at lunch time. Then, on the weekends, at least one more.

When I retired, I finally had the time to read as often as I wanted, as many books as I wanted, without feeling guilty for doing so.

I now read three or four a week, sometimes more, and enjoy each and every moment doing so.

I read actual paper books, as I love the feel and smell of them. After 9/11, I stopped reading fiction and concentrated on my first love, non-fiction about historic events and people. Unfortunately, I prefer to buy my books, so I am living in a studio apartment seriously overrun with books. Trying the library now but (and this is my problem) have trouble reading books touched by unknown others.

Reading is a joy and I thank my mother for instilling the love of books in me and most of my siblings.

Here's to reading more and more in 2017!

Fortunately, I seem to have no difficulty in picking up where I left off and don't have to backtrack to follow the story.

This thread is wonderful.

@coco14 - I can only read one book at a time. Like you, my sister has 3 books going at a time, but I don't know how she keeps track of them! I am so grateful for the public library; I actually belong to two of them! One is for my county (not so great) and the other is for the neighboring county, which is actually closer to my house and has a fantastic library system. I pay a $30 annual out-of-county fee, and it is the best money I spend all year. I would go broke if I paid for all the books I read! Maybe you can use hand sanitizer before and after you read library books; I know there are others who feel the way you do.

Fortunately, I seem to have no difficulty in picking up where I left off and don't have to backtrack to follow the story.

This thread is wonderful.

@coco14Yes I actually do sometimes read two books at a time, but never two novels. I can read a novel and a non-fiction book at the same time. I just read Small Great Things which was pretty intense, so I switched back and forth with that silly Kathy Griffin book which kind of eased the tension.

Never two novels!!

My Goodreads tally is showing 139, but probably about 20 of those are in a category that I have called "did not finish". For whatever reason, I just couldn't get through the book, but may go back at a later date & try that one again.

To answer the question about reading more than one book at a time, the answer is no. I need to have my full attention on the book in my hands right now. At times, if I don't have the time to devote to reading every day, I find that I have to go back, re-read to pick up the current thread, and pick up the emotion & plot line of what's going on right now in that book. I have a goal to branch out more out of my comfort zone. I have gotten more into historical novels, so that's a start. I read very little non fiction and have little desire to do so, exceptions being obvious topics of interest to me. Almost forgot, I do want to dip my toe into audiobooks.

Enjoy your 2017 as a way to get lost in more books.--J
