What are you Reading? DECEMBER 2016

Happy December to all our reading friends, and welcome to the new members of our group. Here are some of the suggestions that have been requested...

Underline, "bold" or CAPITALIZE the name of the book you're reading - it makes it easier for us readers to see what it is.

Include the author of the book - first and last name. There are so many books with the same title (if you are recommending a book, we want to make sure we read the right one!)

Post a few words about the book - would you recommend it or not, and why. No need to post the cover.

Tell us the book genre - is it fiction, a mystery, romance, historical fiction, biography, memoir, or any other type of book.

Of course, there is no obligation to do any of the above, but it makes life easier for all of us.

If you have any suggestions, please let me know, as we’re always open to new ideas!

Last summer my DD helped me download OneClickdigital on my Iphone and I have been listening to books from the Library of Kansas ever since. I really enjoy'd David Baldacci's "The Last Mile" although I read/listened to it out of sequence, should have started with "Memory Man" (also good). "Two by Two" by Nicholas Sparks was kind of everyday tradgic, probably alot like life. . .These days I'm kind of tuned in to Christmas music. . .I also recommend "Dark Road Home" by Anna Carlisle; it's a thriller and very good!

Hi Book Club Lovers! It's my first time here. I don't know why as I am a voracious reader. I'm finally reading Gone Girl. I've heard mixed reviews on it. Someone told me that the movie is better than the book, but I usually find it works the other way. Besides, I prefer reading to watching movies. What did you think of it?

@Yardlie, I read the book and saw the movie. I really enjoyed the book. The movie was very well done also. Enjoy both! LM

Hi @Yardlie. So glad you found us. I really enjoyed Gone Girl (the book). I'm not always a fan of the back and forth between two narrators, but I thought this one was well done. I didn't see the movie.

Trying to finish THE NEST by Cynthia D'Aprix Sweeney. December is a tough month for reading. Lots to do and then I start reading the posts on the blogs here and the forums.

I started out the year reading a lot of really informative and important books, but 2016 has been a brutal year (congratulations to all of us who have made it to the end alive!) and as the year wore on, I started reaching for lighter, cozier books. If 2017 is anything like this, my reading list will be made entirely of favorite books from my childhood or other books I've read before.

I just finished The Case of the Defunct Adjunct, by Frankie Bow. This is Professor Molly Mysteries #0 (it's a prequel) and I liked #1 (The Musubi Murders) better. It's a cozy mystery series set in Hawaii.

I started Written Off, by E. J. Copperman, earlier this week. I'm listening to the audio book and the reader, Amanda Ronconi, is doing a fantastic job with the material. There's a lot of humor in this mystery and she has great timing and delivery of the funniest parts. E. J. Copperman is a pen name of writer Jeff Cohen, so he has quite a few books written between the two names.

Last night I also started Double Whammy, by Carl Hiaasen, on my Kindle. I read Double Whammy many years ago (early 1990s) and it's his first book with the character Skink. Skink has the best backstory of any character I've ever encountered and I'm excited to meet him all over again.

I just started reading Truly, Madly, Guilty by Liane Moriarty. I've been on the waiting list at the library for this one. Books I recently finished are Turbo Twenty-Three by Janet Evanovich and Twelve Days of Christmas by Debbie Macomber. Both were good.

Tried reading Gone Girl...just couldn't slog through it. I rarely read fiction and when I do I have to at least kind of care about the characters...these people were just annoying. Everyone has,different taste,maybe you'll like it.

Regarding Gone Girl, I read the book and was greatly disappointed after all the hype about it. I really disliked the characters, and didn't care what happened to any of them.

I just don't understand what I missed, since so many people seem to love it. It seems to be the book all comparisons are made of, and I don't get it. When I read that a new book is another Gone Girl, I know to stay away.

I didn't watch the movie for obvious reasons lol

A Man Called Ove, author Frederik Hackman, it is about a 57 year old man that to the outside world appears to be grumpy & bitter, but when he is introduced to unforgettable characters in his neighborhood who are able to bring out a side of him that he rarely shows to anyone, we see a character transformed into a big teddy bear, it will bring the reader to outbursts of laughter, tears and a forever tugging of the heart!

My review is probably too late but I just finished reading this book and I loved it, it reminded me of a man that I call a dear friend who is so much like this character that I smiled, cried, and when I read the last page and closed the book I knew that this character is one that I will carry in my heart for a very long time!

I am halfway through DYING FOR CHRISTMAS by TAMMY COHEN. I love to read Christmas novels at this time of the year as well as watch Christmas Hallmark/Lifetime movies; truly puts me into the spirit! This one is a psychological thriller & what a page-turner! I will then indulge in some Christmas cozy mysteries after I am done to tone things down, lol.

I finished Nutshell (Ian McEwan). I have to say the writing is brilliant. I didn't love it, though. Maybe too gimicky.

I also finished, and enjoyed, The Last Mile (David Baldacci). I hope there will be more in the Amos Decker series.

I am in the middle of The Chemist by Stephenie Meyers. It's intriguing. I am not sure where it is going. I've had a few surprises along the way.
