I ordered on Amazon: Silence by Shokaku Endo, a book about 17th century Japan and Christianity. A movie directed by Martin Scorcese is coming out around Christmas. This is one of my very favorite areas in Eastern Hemispheric and European History since Japan had been closed to the outside world. Jesuits hiding would be in great danger as well as Japanese Christians. It is a story about faith.

I also ordered The Samurai by the same author. Again, historically set just prior to the Japanese Edo Period. However, the samurai (who couldnt get past the fact the Jesus taught to 'turn the other cheek-whereas Bushido taught to hack the individual to pieces as was the samurai's right under this code) converts to Christianity and travels to Rome, only to find massive changes upon return to Japan. Faith, change, and personal identity in a time of societal flucuation mandated by law.

Hillbilly Elegy by J. D. Vance-a reflection of working class and middle America. Definitely germane in light of the most recent presidential election and the struggle of a family to achieve middle class status . If you have ever come from a poor family and become successful Mr. Vance's story may reflect your own experiences.

Pulitizer Prize Winner 2016 The Sympathizer-40 years ago the Vietnam War ended. This is the tale of a dual agent living in the US and reporting back to Communist superiors in Vietnam. The times were turbulent.

I'm looking forward to my new read's.

There are so many books with the same title (if you are recommending a book, we want to make sure we read the right one!)

Post a few words about the book - would you recommend it or not, and why. No need to post the cover.

Tell us the book genre - is it fiction, a mystery, romance, historical fiction, biography, memoir, or any other type of book.

Of course, there is no obligation to do any of the above, but it makes life easier for all of us.

If you have any suggestions, please let me know, as we’re always open to new ideas!

Have a great month, and happy reading to all!

I am currently listening to The Secret History of Twin Peaks, by Mark Frost. I don't know how I feel about it yet.

The Texas Book Festival is this coming weekend and I am super excited about it. I look forward to it every year. I love the author panels, the book signings, and the general atmosphere. This year, Carl Hiaasen will finally be there! He's one of my favorite authors and I can't wait to hear him talk and then meet him and get my book signed.

Not a fiction person 99% of the time. I am rereading Doris Kearns Goodwin's excellent book, No Ordinary Time, about the personal lives of FDR and Eleanor Roosevelt during their White House years. My mother IS a fiction reader, but I recommended this book to her, and she loved it, too.

I already posted that I had finished SMALL GREAT THINGS by Jodi Piccoult. You can go back and read that post if you want. She is one of my very favorite authors and always has a reason for her stories. This one could be difficult for some to read but I enjoyed it!

I'm reading DODGERS by Bill Beverly. It started off slow but is picking up steam.

I loved ORDINARY GRACE.

I think this book was recommended on this site, or maybe I found it and recommended it. I can't remember the sequence of events, but the fact remains that this is one of my all-time favorite books. I couldn't put it down for two seconds until I was finished.

It's surprising that I never read any of his other books. I guess because they're a series and I really don't like getting involved in series when I feel compelled to read all of them. But I know I should!

Thanks to this site, I started with Ordinary Grace and am now on his 11th (Northwest Angle) installment in the Cork O'Connell series. Such good books; and I so appreciate the introduction by this groupe!

My Michael Connelly hold came in-The Wrong Side of Goodbye. Is it worth reading? It's been a long time since I put my request in and I don't know if I still want to read it?
