What are you reading? OCTOBER 2016

Happy October to all our reading friends. Here are some of the suggestions that have been requested...

Underline, "bold" or CAPITALIZE the name of the book you're reading - it makes it easier for us readers to see what it is.

Include the author of the book - first and last name. There are so many books with the same title (if you are recommending a book, we want to make sure we read the right one!)

Post a few words about the book - would you recommend it or not, and why. No need to post the cover.

Tell us the book genre - is it fiction, a mystery, romance, historical fiction, biography, memoir, or any other type of book.

Of course, there is no obligation to do any of the above, but it makes life easier for all of us.

If you have any suggestions, please let me know, as we’re always open to new ideas!

(tale about a sports hero vs. a fiesty female detective/latest in the Chicago Stars football team series/I miss Anna Fields' narrations of this series)

After the Storm - Linda Castillo - Kind of a murder mystery novel. The lead is a Chief of Police in a small town. She used to be Amish and still lives near where she grew up. After a big storm tears up part of the town, recovery and cleanup begins and an skull and bones are discovered.

My book club is reading Circling the Sun, so I just started it. It's different then what I would normally read but I'm really enjoying it! I also have Trick of the Light by Loiuse Penny going.

I just finished The Woman in Cabin 10 by Ruth Ware. I had read some poor reviews on this book so when I my turn came up at the library I decided to try it anyway and it was great. I bet someone makes a movie out of this book.

In this tightly wound, enthralling story reminiscent of Agatha Christie’s works, Lo Blacklock, a journalist who writes for a travel magazine, has just been given the assignment of a lifetime: a week on a luxury cruise with only a handful of cabins. The sky is clear, the waters calm, and the veneered, select guests jovial as the exclusive cruise ship, the Aurora, begins her voyage in the picturesque North Sea. At first, Lo’s stay is nothing but pleasant: the cabins are plush, the dinner parties are sparkling, and the guests are elegant. But as the week wears on, frigid winds whip the deck, gray skies fall, and Lo witnesses what she can only describe as a dark and terrifying nightmare: a woman being thrown overboard. The problem? All passengers remain accounted for—and so, the ship sails on as if nothing has happened, despite Lo’s desperate attempts to convey that something (or someone) has gone terribly, terribly wrong...

@DiAnne thanks for the description of the book. When it first came out, I had put in on my TBR list but for some reason, I removed it. I think it was because of such bad reviews. But, as I first thought, it sounds really good, so I'm putting it back on the list!

I'm almost finished with All the Time in the World by Caroline Angell. I'm enjoying it very much and look forward to finding out how it ends.

I finished Twice The Brinded Cat Hath Mew'd (Alan Bradley). The last book left me a little disappointed as it was in a different setting. I was glad to see that Flavia is now back at Buckshaw. The book leaves me with mixed feelings. Some parts of the plot were downright disturbing and I thought there was a lot of filler by quoting passages from other works. But the reason to read this series is for Flavia herself and she does not disappoint. I love her inner musings. I'm looking forward to where Bradley takes Flavia after this.

I read The Man in The Brown Suit (Agatha Christie), very enjoyable.

Also finished The Passage (Justin Cronin), finally, after getting it from the library for the 2nd time. I'm not sure if I'll continue with the Trilogy but I really needed to know how this one ended. The characters were very compelling.

I had both The Widow (Fiona Barton) and Sweetbitter (Stephanie Danler) on my kindle, and after reading a few chapters I decided they weren't for me.

Next up is Commonwealth (Ann Patchett) and maybe Dark Matter (Blake Crouch).

Since I have been on such a LILAC GIRLS kick & THE NATZI TITANIC; I just finished MISCHLING by AFFINITY KONAR. Wow, loved it & a must read for any/all interested in Holocaust books. @LoriLori, I was thinking of you after I finished this book!

Hi there!

My book club just finished PRETTY GIRLS by Karin Slaughter which was fantastic!!! We are now reading FIND HER by Lisa Gardner. Both were/are mystery thrillers and I'm hooked. I am, however, hoping our next selection is a little more friendly and fun and not about abductions and scary sh*t. LOL.

I'm reading The Rainbow comes and Goes by Anderson Cooper and Gloria Vanderbilt I'm about halfway through it and am kind of disappointed. Dull reading about all Gloria's affairs and angst. I'm an Anderson fan,though.

I just finished listening to "The Wonder" by Emma Donaghue. The year is 1859, and a Btitish nurse (a Nightengale) has been hired to watch over an 11 year old girl who claims she hasn't eaten for 4 months in rural Ireland. As one can expect from the author of "Room", this is a difficult book to get through as it covers issues of blinding faith and you are basically watching a child starve herself. Well written, one feels stifled by the times. Not the book for everyone.

As far as audio quality, because the narrator needs to do hard to understand Irish accents or imitate a sometimes whispering child, it is sometimes hard to understand. But otherwise she does an excellent job with the main narration and nurse's character.

@BornToShop I'm reading The Lilac Girls right now and am on a WWll kick. This book is at least not gruesome. I'm enjoying it the more I read and am going to read A Meal in Winter next-then I guess I'll get one of the two you mentioned.

On second thought, I think I'll skip the two you mentioned-don't think I could take it.
