This was all very helpful! I had researched E-readers but wasn't sure. I have an older Ipad but I want a dedicated E-reader I think. I am in two bookclubs and some ladies have used E-readers instead of buying all those books I sometimes have to buy.

I am a regular at our library, the city closed the one nearest to me so I am now going to one further away but is actually better. I am vowed to not purchase any physical books this year as my bookcase is over flowing. The book for April is on a long hold list at the library and I won't get it in time so I will go without having read it, I guess.

The non-profits where you can donate good clothing around here no longer take books. And Half-Price Books only buys some and I got $8 last time for about 20 current, in good condition, hard back books. Cleaned out one shelf on the bookcase though.

I hope this is not a frequently asked question as I looked and couldn't find anything on here that was current. I am considering going to an E-reader device. Looking for pros and cons or recommendations. Thank you!

I've been through a lot of Kindles but I love them. Right now I have a Kindle Paperwhite.

For me the pros outweigh the cons. I love that you can carry a huge library of books with you and it only weighs a few ounces. It was great when I would travel to visit my mom in Florida often! I plan on bringing it with me the next time that I travel.

You can also adjust the font size or style which is a big help. If you don't know the definition of a word just keep your finger on it and a dictionary with the word will pop up! Unlike a magazine or a tablet there is no glare. These are what come to mind.

As for the cons, lots of people like holding a real book which doesn't make a difference to me. It's also not as easy to flip to a back page or see photos posted that you would in a regular book.

I can easily forget the name of the book that I'm reading since the name doesn't pop up at the top and I have to go into "my library " to see what I am currently reading.

I also love not having to deal with a stack of books when I am finished with them.

I have a few books on my iPad mini, but I prefer real books. An iPad or mini iPad can be used for lots of things other reading. I use mine to read and post here. I also play games, watch YouTube videos, stream shows, check news & weather, etc., all on my iPad mini.

I prefer a physical book, because I get my books from the library, and there are more copies of physical books than download licenses. That being said, I have the library app and Kindle app on my iPad mini, and when I do want a digital book, I use the library app or Kindle app.

I've used an iPad for the past 7 or 8 years (maybe longer). I prefer my iPad to hard copy books because I can set the font size to one that's easier for me to read. While some of my friends borrow e-books from the library, I use Amazon's Kindle Unlimited feature to borrow books. I think there's a monthly charge, but I read enough books that it's worth it. You can borrow up to 10 books concurrently. Another advantage to the iPad is that I can perform many other functions besides reading on it. If you borrow e-books from a library, a friend who was a librarian told me you can put your device in Airplane mode and the library won't be able to pull ithe book back if you haven't finished reading it by the due date. I've never put this to the test, but it sounded interesting.

I have a Kindle Paperwhite and I love it. I really like changing the size of the font. And I read outside a lot, so I like the lack of glare. No cons as far as I am concerned. I have wondered about the new color version of Kindle, but it is too expensive to buy on a whim. I subscribe to Kindle Unlimited and the selection of books just gets better and better all the time.

As for "real" books, I still use my public library for new books by my favorite authors because they are expensive on Amazon. I can put them on reserve pre-publication and usually get them when they first come out that way. But I have no nostalgia for "the feel of a book" and I have no desire to collect books.

I have a Kindle - forget the version but I've had it for 13 or 14 years. I never use it anymore. I read on my iPad or Macbook Air. And before the Macbook I read on my Dell laptop. Before I got my iPad I did love the Kindle for travel or anywhere outside of my. house.

Another vote for Kindle Paperwhite.

Compared to reading on a tablet, just find the e-ink of the Kindle to be less intense on my eyes/mind -- especially reading before bed. You can get a page turner for the Paperwhite (separate purchase) and get books from your library on the Libby app.

While I have always loved hard copy books, there's nothing like carrying 10+ books with you on vacation in a slim device like a Kindle. Also easy to stash in your purse so that you can read in the waiting room at appts.

ETA: I know Amazon is the devil these days, but they also really stand behind this product in my experience. Had one with a screen issue right after the warranty expired (like a few days after). They just shipped me a new one. No questions asked, didn't want the old one back. That was the first Kindle I had over 15 years ago. No issues or problems since.

I have had Kindles since they first came out. I LOVE them! I also have a Kobo device. I like that one, too. They are so much easier to read, as others have said. They both are e ink devices so it's easier on your eyes. I, also have 2 iPads, that I very rarely read on them. Except for cookbooks. E-ink devices don't have the blue light that can bother your eyes and disturb your sleep. Also, no distractions from messages, emails, etc. like there would be from a tablet. Especially since I read in bed. Ereaders are easier to hold than actual books and can be taken anywhere. Both Kindles and Kobo devices are backlit so you can read in the dark. With Kindles, you have to use Amazon as your main source of books. With Kobo, you have to use their site for books. You can get ebooks from your local library, usually through an app called Libby. If you're not in the US, my understanding is that you can't borrow books and have them delivered to a Kindle device (I could be wrong). There are a lot of free books that you can download but Kindles have more.

The Signature Paperwhite has 32g (more than just the Paperwhite) and no ads.

I prefer using an iPad as my e-reader. I bought a Kindle, but hated it...waste of money. I gave it to my daughter.

kindle paperwhite, I bought it a few months ago. I like the portability. Also the long battery life. When I read with the kindle app on my Samsung tablet, the battery gets used up much faster. I love physical books too.

@Carmie why didn't you like the kindle ?

Kindle, not the paperwhite. 99% of what I read are library books. My Kindle is kind of heavy which is why I rarely read on it.
