please recommend a great series

I love British detective mysteries and have read so many. but, the last series I read ( an Israeli secret agent living in England) was so violent and sad that I just had to quit.

then I totally switched gears and read the Jan Karon Mitford series, about a bachelor Episcopal priest who lives in a small NC mountain town and marries in his 60s.

I thoroughly enjoyed the change of subject matter but now I'm ready to go back to some good British mysteries.

our library has hit and miss selections so I will probably be buying used books from eBay.

please recommend some interesting detective/mystery series, preferably set in the UK.

Love British detective mysteries! I like them on the lighter side so here are some of the series I like:

Rhys Bowen - Royal Spyness Mysteries

Robert Thorogood - The Marlow Murder Club series

Peter Boland - The Charity Shop Detective Series

Richard Osman - We Solve Murders series (new)

Richard Osman - Thursday Night Murder Club Mystery series

Joseph O'Loughlin series by Michael Robotham

Frieda Klein series by Nikki French

Detective Bernadette Noel series by Joy Kluver

Marion Todd books (takes place in Scotland)

I recommend reading these series in order.

the Louise Penney murder mystery series featuring Inspector Armand Gamache. Set in Quebec. Very very well written. Great slice of French Canadian village life, not

too graphic with the murders. Love these.

If you've read Agatha Christie's Miss Marple books, try mysteries written by Patricia Wentworth. She wrote 32 books with Miss Silver, a retired governess and teacher, turned private detective, who works with Scotland Yard. I have all of them from years ago so you may have to try dealers of out of print titles. They are worth the search!

When you're ready to go back again to 'village life', I highly recommend both the Fairacre and Thrush Green series from 'Miss Read'. Both are charming, lovely series taking place in English villages. I've read both multiple times and am almost ready to go back and read them again. The author's real name is Dora Saint but the books are published under Miss Read. These are gentle, relaxing but engrossing reads filled with characters you'll come to enjoy.

@stevieb I have all of the Miss Read books---Fairacre and Thrush Green. I loved then when I first read them years ago and will read them again now that you reminded me of the series.

Susan Elia Macneal - the Maggie Hope series. The first is Mr. Churchill's Secretary

Alan Bradley - the Flavia de Luce series. The first is The Sweetness at the Bottom of the Pie (he has weird titles but the books are charming)

@Bookplate I enjoyed the Flavia de Luce series too, and wanted to mention that Alan Bradley has just published a new book in the series called What Time The Sexton's Spade Doth Rust. He does have weird titles. It's been 5 years since the last book and I didn't think there would be another one.

G.M. Malliet has two series I love: Max Tudor (first book "Wicked Autumn") and St. Just (first book " Death of a Cozy Writer").

And I second all the suggestions for Louise Penny, Elly Griffiths and Alan Bradley!

Any series by Ken Follett is worth your time. His books are voluminous but worth the read. An excellent writer.

I am completely obsessed with Anne Perry. She wrote around 100 books; she died in 2023. I love her genius.

I loved all the Anne Perry books, too, especially the William Monk series, but the Thomas Pitt series is good too. They need to be read in order in my opinion. She was such an excellent writer.

I've read that some people have not wisheDto read Anne Perry because she had committed an actual murder. This fact does not bother me, but I do feel that this has enhanced certain aspects of her work.

What do you think?

Anne Perry was given a sentence for her crime, which she fulfilled. I believe in redemption. She turned out to be an exceptional writer and gave me (and others) many hours of enjoyment reading her books.

Since this thread is about recommending a great series, I stand by my recommendation for her books.
