Read-Listen to Books? -Open to Community Chat

Hi @Forum_Folks

I realize there's a Forum called" "Book Club." And appreciate, love & read the topics/responses. Thank you!

I wanted to open up my question to *Community Chat* also..

Did you/Do you read books?

Hard/Soft Copy? Audio? Online? Otherwise?

For me:

I still kinda prefer Hard/Soft copy 'cause I'm old, stuck in my ways, & it's what Im used to.

I just finished 2 new books, non-fiction, my preference, (unless I have more time).

But I have a new saved URL for book online I want to read/need to read (esp for my recent awful moving situation sanity)

I have a new Hard Copy book waiting here, & I want to buy one i've seen TV author interviews in the last few days.

(I *buy* them if I want to put money in the pocket of the Author.

Otherwise, Public Library, which oftentimes also have online books to read! FREE - written, & audio, even movies Just ask them for info).

And of course I have my Best Selling Book of All Time, (that you'll only be able to pry from my cold, dead hands, or, my body/brain has turned to absolute squish.) I cant imagine anyone wanting it, cause it's filled with my own colored markings, notes, references & more.

Books, wise - I wish I had more time. But that is the story of my life!!

How 'bout you, & books, aka reading?

@JoyFilled Warrior My favorite way to read a book is to have a paper version and also listen to the audio book, preferably read by the author.

I don't know what to do with my eyes if it is the audio book only and I'm easily distracted with just a paper book. The combination helps me focus better.

I tend to read mostly nonfiction but just got the first 6 books in Sue Grafton's alphabet mystery series. I've read them before but they are favorites.

Seems like something physical in the hands when reading. heh

I thought it was cause Im so old, & used to physical books.

(added) Just remembered. Also, I often write notes, &/or Highlight on the Hard copy of the books I read. And remember those highlighted parts. I have immediate reference for going back when conversing abt that particular part

I read a couple hours a night, in bed. I prefer paperback versions, as hard cover books are heavier and more difficult to hold up when I'm lying down. (Arthritis in my wrists, among other places.

I have the Barnes & Noble thing on my phone, but I don't like reading off the phone, I've discovered. I guess I'd use it on a trip or a long stay waiting for someone ... for emergencies when I have time to kill.

I tried reading a short story off my phone one night and I dozed off and the phone hit me in the face!

Almost broke a tooth! Not doing that again.

I think you'd get more responses in the book forum since you can't post in both places. For example, I'm not a book reader but this is where I post.

I like reading hard-cover books, mostly non-fiction. I have purchased many through Amazon. Once a book has been out for a while, or it is an old favorite, I have gotten great buys from their "used book" section.

Due to problems in hands and arms I must have audio or ebooks. I prefer audio if it's well read. I read 4-5 books a week. I use Brooklyn on line library, I love it. Worth every tax dollar.

I have been a reader all my life. I am thrilled with e-books--it is a wonderful thing for me. With an e-book you can make the text size whatever you like, and the page color and brightness to suit your eyes.

You can have hundreds of books at your fingertips, instantly have access to any book you want, download free books from the library or Amazon, and not have heavy books to move around.

I read on a Kindle or my Mini IPad. I also have a Kindle Fire and read on it a lot. For a book-lover, reading online can be a huge advantage. Honestly? I like reading online and wouldn't want to go back to hard copy books for most of my reading.

I spent my career and personal life reading for all kinds of reasons. My family's history of macular degeneration has begun to interfere with my literary passion. I have had to find new ways to do what I love. Audio books sometimes help me catch up on my reading ( although I am fussy about narrators, pace, accent, etc.). And the microphone on my iPad keyboard helps me to compose posts (or emails) on bad vision days.

As an aside, when this website becomes wonky, or someone glibly suggests to change browsers or to shut down and start

again, I hope you remember that some of us with vision issues cannot easily do what to many seem like "easy fixes."

I have no idea abt digital reading using portable technology, just laptop.

I had a Tablet from HSN/QVC? But I didnt really give it a chance, admittedly. Didnt seem like enough time to learn anew, then. Less time now.

While waiting in a Doc's office, etc, I see ppl pounding away on their laps! Told me the best tablet is at Costco.

Having the kindle book along with the audio, for me, is the very best...

because I retain info better that way

Y'know? I wonder if our Mode of reading books has anything to do with whether a person remembers info best using the -

VAK Learning Styles model:

Visual
Auditory
Kinesthetic

But where does it fit where a person likes both Audio & Visual both at the same time? heh

I think I'd prefer both Audio & Visual at the same time.

Audio only loses me, then I check back & realize i lost a lot of the audio info, where my mind wandered about something else. I used to listen to audio on the way to work, when it was long commutes.

For me it is definitely holding the book in my hand, I'm a homebody and there is nothing better for me than sitting on my chaise and reading a good book, with a cup of tea.

Im not sure it might not just be what I'm used too.

The real thing is - i really need to be able to write-highlight those words/notes in the book.

And Im not used to sitting still for long, regardless.

Just now, i got up to scrub my nails before painting them. Reading my Cell at this new cute little luncheonette I have, & Sweetie thinks she OWNS that table. She kept laying, touching, rubbing, changing my Cell readings constantly, paying me NO attention to get on her nearby shelf. NOPE. Imagine if electronic was my only mode of reading?

She doesnt do this when I have a book in the same situation.

@Sooner I'm with you.......I love my iPad since I can adjust the font. I have paid memberships to 3 libraries other than my local library as their selection of ebooks is so small.
