Question for Goodread Users

I have been using Goodreads for years and I keep track of everything I've read. But, sometimes I don't finish a book because I don't like it. I want to record the book in Goodreads so I know I had attempted to read it but there is nothing to let you do that.

It's either Read - Currently Reading - Want to Read. Any suggestions?

@Winkk No, but I would like to know this answer as well...Sometimes I put a book down for months, and then pick it back up or sometimes I don't finish it at all......Good question!

@Winkk For books I've tried unsuccessfully to read and enjoy, I file them in the "want to read" category - after all. I do care enough to try again because too often it's my personal mindset at the time I first tried.

Because companies change, get sold, go out of business, I have kept my own log for many years. It's alphabetized by Author Name and within each author by Title.

I started to use the right most column with very tiny print to record ones I wouldn't recommend. The title is preceded by an " X ."

When asked for recommendations, I simply forward or give them a copy.

The list is updated about 3 or 4 times a year. On average, I may read 2 books / week.

Do you write reviews for the books you've read? I do. Even for the books I may not finish and explain why. Chances are the majority of people reading my reviews won't read reviews for books with low number of stars given in the rating.

I also include in the review why I lost interest by Chapter XX. It's my own personal "memory" of reading each book, as well as keeping a complete log on Goodreads.

Each year I read about 235-240 books. My memory doesn't remember all of those titles, authors and content! I need the reviews as well. Goodreads has been a wonderful resource tool for me over the years. It certainly beats the receipe cards I used for every book read back in the day!

@BirkiLady. I don't usually write a review I just rate it. But, that is a good idea, maybe I should start doing that.

I have seen reviews where the person put down DNF (Did not finish.) I thought that was always an option.

This is a good question. When I loose interest in a book, and that has happened more frequently for me this year. I currently take the following steps.

* My Books

*Currently Reading

* Look to the right and "X" out to delete the book.

I currently have to rely on my memory to hopefully not request the book from the library in the future. So far it has worked for me.

What I've seen in the reviews is people state DNF and then give their review. I have used Goodreads for 20 years, it's hard for me to believe that one day Goodreads is going to go away. I think now it is owned by Amazon. There is no better place, and no better source of information about books and authors.

Putting in my review that I didn't finish is OK but, in a year from now when I see the book again I won't read through all the reviews for mine.

My preference would be for a drop down box where you can just click it just like the other three options.

If you've read enough to know you don't like it, I'd label it as read.

If you go to "Bookshelves" on your My Books page and click edit, you can add a shelf. I had to add a "couldn't finish" because there were two books that I didn't like and never wanted to try to read again.

What I do is create a category in the books that I have read as DNF, for did not finish. You have to give the book a rating. So,e times I leave a review as to why I had difficulty and sometimes I don't.
