Several years ago I went to Barnes & Noble looking for a book by Debbie Macomber. I asked the salesperson about the title and gave her the author's name. "Who is the author?" she asked with a confused look, and I repeated her name, or at least what I thought was her name. "Oh," she replied, "You mean Debbie May-cumber."

I had been pronouncing the middle letters of her last name like "comb," the kind that you would run through your hair. Apparently, "Macomber" is pronounced as May-cumber and rhymes with cucumber. Oops...lesson learned!
