Cookbooks: Do You Have a Favorite?

“Life satisfaction is a term of art used by social scientists to capture a person’s overall happiness and well-being...Dinner is a marvelous way to create that time, to mark it, to make it happen.”

The author, Sam Sifton, goes on to say that this happiness doesn’t happen in 1,2 5 or 20 dinners. It occurs with time and repetition and this book is a rough guide to help make that happen and make it easier.

One of my new favorites is "See You on Sunday." Do you have a cookbook you like?

That looks like a great cookbook. I'll check it out.
Some of my favorite recipes come from church cookbooks that I have collected over the years.

Favorite - No. I find most cookbooks only offer at most, for me a couple of recipes I'm interested in trying. So, I rely on the library or online for ideas. I have this book on request at my library. But, of course, everything is closed.

I get most of my recipes from the Net these days, but " Lidia's Favorite Recipes, " by Lidia Bastianich is a well worn favorite. It is a wonderful resource for a variety of Italian sauces, pasta soups etc. Every recipe I've tried was a winner.

My favorite was my mother's Old Settlement Cook Book. I learned a great deal from that book, along with watching Julia Child and my grandmother. I have and love my grandmother's filled recipe box. I also liked a Betty Crocker cook book.

I love cookbooks especially older ones. I have the Woman’s Day Encyclopedia of Cookery from the sixties and all of James Beards cookbooks. All of these tell stories along with the recipes. I can read them just like a regular book.

For years and years every Christmas I would get the Southern Living Annual Cookbook. But low and behold they are no longer putting them out.
this year after Christmas I bought myself America's Test Kitchen "Cooking for Two" and I just love it,as we are empty nesters. My daughter borrowed it and I thought I would never get it back. Great recipess for two. Highly recommend it.

This is hard for me. I have A LOT of cookbooks! I started getting them when my grandmother gave me my first one at 14. If anyone visited an area of this country or overseas and asked me what they could bring me, I always said a cookbook. I also belong to a cookbook club.

@alliswell I have my mothers cookbook that she purchased years ago. It is called "Bell South Cookbook" from the phone company. There is literally 400 pages and she has made notations on numerous recipes that were her favorites. My mother passed away in 2016 and it holds a special place in my heart and my home!

I like my Jane Brody's Good Food Book from many many years ago. My original is long gone and I've since found more used copies at local bookstores.

The one I like has to do with nostalgia and a time when I truly enjoyed QVC. Jeanne Bice from Quacker Factory offered a Christmas cookbook. I set it out each Christmas and browse the pages - recipes aren't healthy but it's comfort food.

What is the title of Jeannes cookbook? I don't ever remember her talking about it, maybe this was b4 I became interested in QF.

I love cookbooks! Even with the internet, I'm still drawn to cookbooks and enjoy browsing when I see them in stores.

It's hard to pick a favorite, but I like those which preface the entry with a favorite story about the recipe and why they like it. For that reason, I've always been a fan of the church/club cookbooks. The old mall store, Waldenbooks, used to have tables full of these "community" cookbooks. I still have them--with their $1.95 price stickers lol. Also, you'll find those homespun stories in the Gooseberry Patch series of cookbooks. Same with Applehood and Mother Pie.

I also still have this cookbook, from about 10 years ago, as I love soups and stews:

I guess I just like reading cookbooks!

I have my Mother's Betty Crocker Cookbook from the 1950s which I learned to cook with. That one has fond memories. The most useful all around cookbook with everything, is Joy of Cooking. It is like an Encyclopedia.

@heirloom she called it QUACKER FACTORY CHRISTMAS. When the libraries open up, try to get a copy. I truly feel it was written when everything in her life was clicking - grateful for everything.

I have favorites and they are my Greek cookbooks that I got on my trips to Greece in the 1980's and living there in the mid 1990's. Even tho' I mainly use the internet for recipes, I rely on them when I need a recipe for a Greek dish that I haven't made a million times.
