I read The Good Earth by Pearl S. Buck in high school, and it became my very favorite book in the world. I'd never read a book about those years in China, and it was like I was reading about life on another planet. I've memorized certain passages, and have a precious First Edition copy, along with my other copies plus the one on my Kindle. I can open the book to any page and begin to read, and will know what's coming next.

There are many others I can call my favorites, but not as much as The Good Earth.

What books have you read that made a lasting impression on you? I am thinking of books I have read through the years. Not too many current books (although I enjoy reading them) have made the same impact on me as these oldies but goodies:

Dear and Glorious Physician by Taylor Caldwell

Back Street by Fannie Hurst

Woman of Substance by Barbara Taylor Bradford

Valley of Decision by Marcia Davenport

Atlas Shrugged by Ann Rynd

and of course as a child The Nancy Drew Series!

Edited to add Gone with the Wind by Margaret Mitchell.

Stephen King had a book about a haunted car: Christine. Maybe that's the one you were thinking about.

One of my favorite King books is Misery. Annie Wilkes is one of the scariest characters I've come across.
