What Are You Reading --- November 2015

This book thread is started on the first of each month.

Some suggestions for posting here:

~ underline, bold or CAPITALIZE the name of the book you're reading - it makes it easier for us readers to see what it is

~ include the author of the book - there are so many books with the same title (if you are recommending a book we want to make sure we read the right one!)

~ post a few words about the book - would you recommend it or not?

~ tell us the book genre - is it a mystery, romance, historical, biography, etc.

***There is no obligation to do any of the above!

Hi, Lainey! Here, I'll do a Harry Potter spell to slow down time: Arresto Momentum! Hope that helps LOL!

I have not read this book and despite the good reviews I will never read this book because I can't stop laughing at the title. The book was i n a promotional email Amazon sent me this morning and I think this has to be the worst book title I've ever seen. I'm laughing so hard I'm punchy. Hope it makes others laugh too!!!

In the last two weeks I have read:

Foreign Affairs by Stuart Woods. I still like this series even though Stone Barrington is too old for his playboy ways. This is set in Paris and Rome, so that added to the story.

Two 2015 Christmas books: Dashing Through the Snow by Debbie Macomber and Christmas at Mustang Creek by Linda Lael Miller. These are both light and easy reads to get me into the spirit of the season. The Miller book is more enjoyable if you have read others in the Brides of Bliss County series.

Betrayed by Lisa Scottolini. This is a great book. It was engaging, had smart characters and plenty of action. This is part of the Rosatto and DiNunzio series, but focuses on Judy Carrier, another lawyer in this firm. Scottolini weaves together several different story lines in a great way.

Currently Reading:

Cocaine Blues (Phryne Fisher, Book 1), by Kerry Greenwood and Reality Bites Back: How Guilty Pleasure TV is Making Us Sexist, Shallow, and Socially Irresponsible, by Jennifer L. Pozner. Cocaine Blues is the first book in the Phryne Fisher series on which the TV series Miss Fisher's Murder Mysteries is based. So far it's very good. I'm listening to the audio book and the narrater is very flat during general narration pieces but really comes alive when she does the many characters. Reality TV Bites Back is becoming very ranty and could have done with a better editor. I feel like she made her points, backed them up with evidence, and I'm convinced - but I still have 2/3 of the book left to go....

Finished:

The Musubi Murder, by Frankie Bow and Between the World and Me, by Ta-Nehisi Coates. The Musubi Murder is the first book in a new cozy series and I enjoyed it very much. It takes place in Hawaii and many of the characters work at a university there. I enjoyed the characters and the story very much and look forward to the next book in the series. Between the World and Me is a memoir written by Ta-Nehisi Coates as a letter to his son. It's very poignant and brings up some important issues. I got the audio book and was impressed by the story but not the narration. Ta-Nehisi Coates is a gifted writer, but his narration was flat and I think I would have enjoyed it better if I hadn't listened to the audio version.

I just finished TINY LITTLE THING by BEATRIZ WILLIAMS (hope that is right!). I enjoyed it and look forward to the last installment coming out soon - I think it's ALONG THE INFINITE SEA.

I just finished Kitchens of the Great Midwest by J. Ryan Stradal. I didn't love this, but it was my book club's choice for the month. There is a lot to discuss, though!

Now, I am reading Rose Harbor in Bloom by Debbie Macomber (easy-reading romance), Dumplin' by Julie Murphy (funny YA novel), and looking forward to It's Only Love by Marie Force (next installment of a romance series) being delivered to my kindle overnight!

Oh my goodness! I bought the paperback One Second After and made the mistake of starting it at bedtime. I think I read until about 3 a.m.and finally MADE myself put it down to go to sleep. I had already started Ted Dekker's A.D.33 and discovered there was an earlier novel called A.D.30. I am well into the A.D.33 so I will go ahead and read it first.

Just finished the new Kate Morton : "The Lake House: A Novel". Rather convoluted plot with lots of time jumping and an unusual twist at the end. Just started the newest Galbraith/Rowling mystery, "Career of Evil"--It's got a real "kick" to begin with.

I'm reading Hallowe'en Party by Agatha Christie. It's a book in the Poirot series about a young girl at a Hallowe'en party who is murdered, after claiming to have been witness to a murder at a younger age, not realizing at the time that it was a murder she was seeing. I started it on Halloween and hopefully, I'll be finished in a few days (I'm a s-l-o-w reader).

Apparently, this book isn't a considered to be very good, but I'm really enjoying it so far. Also, being the Anglophile that I am, I love that this book was dedicated to P.G. Wodehouse.

I'm SO glad to see this thread is still alive and kickin'!
