Question about the movie, The Martian"

I've never seen the movie, but had no idea it was a comedy! When I saw that it was up for best movie at the Golden Globes in the category of musical or comedy, I was surprised. I just assumed it was a dramatic movie. And now it has been nominated for an Oscar. Since a comedic movie rarely, if ever, wins the oscar, it probably has no chance. Actually I haven't seen any of the nominated movies, but from what I've read, it seems like the movie Leonard DiCaprio (can't think of the name of the movie at the moment) was in, has the best chance.

It isn't a comedy. Matt Damon and the Director have both said they were surprised when it was nominated as a comedy. They said there were some funny parts in it, but it's a drama.

Thank you! That answers my question......it was not a comedy! And lots of dramatic movies have some comedic moments in it, and they still aren't a comedy......wonder why "the powers that be" have branded the movie a comedy?? I'm sure the director, as well as Matt Damon, are dismayed by this.

I wouldn't consider The Martian a comedy but it has lots of funny moments in it. Things Matt has to do to stay alive, and the manner in which he handles adversity, well...some of it will have you laughing. On the other hand, waiting for the outcome to reveal itself has some dramatic "edge of your seat" moments.

I guess the category could have gone either way.

I haven't yet seen the movie but I did read the book. There is a lot of humour in the character's (Damon) reasoning & thoughts, yet we are still in suspense to find out whether he will be doomed to die on Mars or get rescued.

If Ray Walston had a role in the movie, it would have been aptly described as comedy. But since he did not - who knows?!
