GH EXCLUSIVE: LAURA WRIGHT (CARLY) PREVIEWS 'VERY EMOTIONAL' 62ND ANNIVERSARY EPISODE

Expect a poignant, emotional, and history-rich episode when General Hospital marks its 62nd anniversary on Tuesday, April 1. In the milestone show, a cross-section of Port Charles residents will gather at the hospital for the dedication of the Monica Quartermaine Cardiac Care Center (Monica’s portrayer, the late Leslie Charleson, will be honored separately, later this year). The occasion will give the characters the opportunity to reflect on what G.H. has meant to them over the years. Soap Opera Digest spoke with Laura Wright, whose Carly will share touching scenes with her ex-husband, Sonny Corinthos, in the episode.

Memory Lane

According to Wright, who will mark her 20th anniversary in the role of Carly in November, participating in a special episode like this one feels, well, special. “This one honors Leslie Charleson, so that’s special,” she points out. “And I get to work with people that I don’t usually work with on an everyday basis, because they sprinkle in different people from the cast together. There are a couple of scenes where everyone’s together, and that definitely feels special.”

Carly’s day starts out with her young daughter, Donna, and Felicia, who works at the hospital as a patient advocate and was close friends with Carly’s late mother, Bobbie Spencer. “Donna wants to go see the [memorial] wall, the wall of people who have passed away who made General Hospital so special,” Wright explains. “And then Felicia let’s Carly know, ‘We’re celebrating 62 years [since the hospital’s founding].’ ”

Carly, Felicia and Donna then lovingly remember Bobbie, who passed away last year. Later, Carly meets up with her former hubby, Sonny. “When Carly and Sonny run into each other, Carly’s in the chapel,” the actress reports. “And they talk about, ‘Wow, it’s been a long time [since we’ve been coming here],’ and Carly says that she doesn’t think of loss when she thinks of General Hospital. She thinks of all the nurses and doctors and her mom and how they’ve taken care of so many people. So, it’s very emotional and I think just kind of perfect. It’s a bittersweet thing for Carly in that moment. I think that a hospital would be, especially a hospital chapel. It’s a place where people are healed and there’s so much great success, but there are also people who find themselves in the chapel to pray that the people they love make it. They kind of talk about that.”

While the oft-married Carly and Sonny are in different romantic spheres at the moment, their connection remains palpable. “They’re family,” Wright declares. “And there is stuff coming up in a few weeks, stuff going on with Sonny, where Carly steps up — without a doubt, without a question — into a spot of support. They are family, whatever has happened in their romantic life, and no matter what, she’s got his back and vice versa.”

Wright’s stand-out memories of shooting the episode involve getting to be on set with actors whose storylines don’t often cross with hers. “I loved being on set with Finola Hughes [Anna] and Jane Elliot [Tracy] and Wally Kurth [Ned],” she enthuses. “Most of the fun stuff is behind the scenes, like us being yelled at to stop talking and laughing so we can get to the scene and stuff like that [laughs]. Us trying to take pictures of each other and them telling us to hurry and put our phones away and to hide the scripts: ‘We can see your scripts!’ And [Scarlett Spears, Donna] is so adorable, the only kid on set, and we were having so much fun just hanging out with her. It was just a great day!”

The main event that brings all the characters together is, of course, “the unveiling of the wing and the honorary plaque to the character of Monica. I didn’t really have a lot of dialogue in those scenes, I was just in them, but Genie Francis [Laura] has a lot to say. And I told her like, ‘I don’t think anyone can stand up and give a speech, a eulogy, a toast at a wedding better than Genie Francis!’ I mean, she, she nails it to me every single time. I’m drawn in to what she’s saying. If I have any lines around it, I usually mess up because I’m too busy paying attention to what she’s saying! I love watching Genie do what she does because she’s so fantastic at it and she kind of pulls us in, you know? It feels like home when Genie’s there, and you feel like you’re part of a really beautiful cast with her at the center.”

Genie Francis Takes Us Inside ‘General Hospital’s Anniversary Episode Honoring Leslie Charleson

GH turns 62 on April 1, and the show will mark the occasion with a special episode focusing on the hospital.

Mayor Laura Collins, played by the legendary Genie Francis, plays a key role in the day as she leads the dedication of the Dr. Monica Quartermaine Cardiac Care Center. “I was thrilled,” says Francis. “It’s always nice when they acknowledge the fact that I’m sort of an antique here, and I’m historical. I like the feeling of that.”

The episode was written before the real life death of Leslie Charleson, on January 12, with the hope that Charleson could be a part of it. The show’s writers are now planning a memorial for the actress to air later. “She was a real pillar of this show and of that hospital, which is a lovely thing, so I’m glad they did this in her honor,” Francis notes. “I think it’s beautiful. Most of us have come and gone, me included — even Tony, Geary, Luke Spencer came and went — but Leslie was there nonstop.”

Charleson joined the show in 1977, and Francis, who started airing as Laura months earlier, shared scenes with her back then. “She was always so kind to me,” Francis says. “And the story was that Laura became friends with Monica, and Monica was having an affair with Rick [Webber, Chris Robinson], Laura’s mother Leslie’s [Webber, Denise Alexander] husband, which, of course, Laura didn’t know. And there she was, sort of being chummy with Leslie’s daughter, and they became fairly good friends. Laura confided in her and asked Monica for birth control pills when she started to date Scotty [Baldwin, Kin Shriner].”

Francis has a standout memory of working with Charleson when she was a teen. “Years ago, we did the show as if it were live, even though it was live-to-tape,” she begins. “I remember one time doing a scene with Leslie, who always knew her lines, and in the middle of the scene, I could see the terror go across her eyes that she was up and she did not know her lines. I knew we couldn’t stop, so we were being fried like an egg, basically, and I’ve never had that experience before. That was the first time going through it as a young kid. I remember trying to feed her lines and we were ad-libbing and trying to stay somewhat in the scene. Anyway, we got through the whole thing, and when ended it, they cut away, and Leslie grabbed me, hugged me, and we both burst into tears because it was utterly terrifying. We were both shaking. We got through it but then I went home that night and I cried in my mother’s lap. I’d never experienced anything like that before. That was really cutting your teeth on live television. I think I must have been only 15 at the time.”

Now, she gets to kick off the commemorative hour with another cherished costar, Maurice Benard (Sonny Corinthos). “I have to say, without question, he’s my favorite person to work with,” declares Francis. “There’s a comfort there that is unexplainable. The only other time I felt it was with Tony Geary. I just feel safe and when I work with him. He reminds me of how beautiful our profession of acting can be, and it makes me love it again. He’s that kind of actor, and I just feel so lucky when I get to work with him.”

Francis will also share poignant moments with Alexis Davis (Nancy Lee Grahn) as they talk about the late Sam McCall (Kelly Monaco). “Nancy’s a friend of mine, so I’m just thrilled whenever I get to work with her, as well,” relays Francis. “It’s so painful for both of them because Laura’s child [Lulu Spencer] lived and Alexis’s died, so it’s about Alexis helping Laura to forgive herself and telling her how to honor her daughter. I thought it was really beautiful.”

Laura’s daughter, Lulu, is now being played by Alexa Havins, and Francis quickly felt a connection to her. “It’s such an easy fit,” Francis praises. “She wants to make it wonderful, and she’s excited to be here. Some people you just click with, and I click well with her. I like the way she works. I like her simple, honest truth, and she’s a very giving actress. She’s very aware of what the other person has to do and being supportive of that.”

She’s also thrilled to have Jonathan Jackson back as Laura’s son, Lucky Spencer. “Jonathan’s been great; it’s been such a treat,” she enthuses. “My only disappointment is that I haven’t had many scenes with him. They’ve played him with Elizabeth [Webber, Rebecca Herbst] so much because that’s such a popular couple, and it makes sense. He’s a grown man. He wouldn’t be around his mommy all the time, but I wish I had more scenes with him.”

Francis’ scenes in the special episode conclude with Laura’s dedication of the wing at the hospital. “I take great pride in giving the speeches because there’s a lot of truth in them and how I feel about this place and how I feel about the people in it,” Francis offers. “Laura reminds us to honor what’s come before us, to be proud of what we’ve done, and that our love for each other is the most important thing. Laura speaks from the heart, and she reminds us to live from our hearts. That’s her voice, with an honest love for the place where she grew up.”

As Francis looks back on her own 48-year association with GH, which has seen its share of highs and lows, she reflects, “It’s a mixed bag, but I feel rather than having been crushed down by some of the bad parts that happened, I feel that I managed to work through it and stand up on top of it victoriously and it feels like a win to me. It feels like I weathered the storm. I’m still standing, and I am very proud of everything that I’ve been through.”

And she’s already looking ahead to more milestones. “I’m kind of hanging on for the 64th anniversary because then I would have attended then 50 of them,” she points out. “I’m looking forward to that moment. I think I may have to have a party.”

GH RECAP TUESDAY, APRIL 1st

Laura’s up on the landing, looking down on the nurses station as Sonny shows up beside her. She says he always shows up when it counts, then they head down to the main floor, talking about unveiling the new state of the art cardiac center.

Tracy rushes up in the elevator with the news that Monica isn’t well enough to make it to the dedication of the center that has her name. They talk about how much she’d done for the hospital — especially financially — and Laura says she’ll also be grateful for how kind Monica was to her.

Curtis Worries Over the Donor

Elsewhere, Alexis thanks Curtis for encouraging her to go to the AA meeting, saying she feels safer going to ones at the hospital than closer to home. He heads over to say high to Laura and he tells her that someone from Aurora Media will be there too.

She laments that Kevin can’t make it, but asks Curtis how excited Portia is. She’ll feel better once the cardiac care center is open. He heard there’s an anonymous donor. Laura muses that the mystery donor is someone who had a contentious relationship with Monica over the years, but admired her, too.

But when she says it’s best if their name is left off the center, he worries about the hospital being tied to them. Laura shrugs it off. The hospital brings out the best in everyone.

Alexis Shares a Moment With Sonny and Laura

Alexis, meanwhile, finds Sonny at the memorial wall, counting his blessings. She notes it can be tough to find blessings sometimes, then they move to talking about how stunning the new atrium is. Which Sonny should know, Alexis says, since he’s the anonymous donor. She just happened to see the paperwork.

Sonny acknowledges that Monica “hates me, but I respect the ****** out of her.” He leaves and Laura comes over to talk about the big day with Alexis and break the news that Monica can’t be there for it.

Laura mentions Lulu running into Alexis at the PCPD, and Laura wishes she could do more to thank Alexis for giving her child for her own. Alexis insists Laura shouldn’t be sorry, but Laura starts tearing up saying she is. “Sam didn’t die so Lulu could live,” Alexis assures Laura. Sam wanted to save Lulu, so they should focus on her bravery and gift and heroism.

Laura hugs Alexis and assures her they’ll honor Sam by honoring her life and love. Laura then runs back into Curtis and admits she’s worried about doing the speech without Monica there. Curtis assures her Aurora will get every word for Monica to read. They reflect on his time in the wheelchair and how much the hospital and its doctors did.

It’s General Hospital’s 62nd Anniversary

Felicia comes upon Carly and Donna and they all decide to go take a look at Bobbie’s photo. Felicia tells them that today is the hospital’s 62nd anniversary. Donna says hi to grandma and Felicity and Carly reflect on how much Bobbie meant to them, and how much she loved being a nurse.

Terry heads into Portia’s office and reminds her that it’s General Hospital’s 62nd anniversary. They go out to take a look at the beautiful new center, thanking the contractor as he finishes up. Terry and Portia agree Monica would love her namesake, and mention they’re both so inspired by her.

Lucy Makes Her Pitch to Sidwell

Lucy knocks on Sidwell’s door, posters in hand for her proposal. She has four words for him: General Hospital Nurses Ball! She gets in and goes through the Ball, from the first one in 1994, to the millions they raised over the years. And the dresses. All her dresses (which we flash to).

Then Lucy gives an impassioned sales pitch about how great the cause is. “Lucy,” Sidwell stops her. “The cause. What is it?” She’s so happy he asked! It was conceived as an HIV/AIDS care fundraiser. It may seem less prevalent here, but it’s still a huge global problem.

She tells Jenz about Stone and Robin, and her dear friend and co-chair, Jon Hanley. She lost so many people to the disease, which is why she still does it. She tears up as she talks, then suggests that this could be the perfect opportunity for Sidwell to change people’s perception if he helps out with the — “Yes.” He’ll do it, on one condition. He’ll underwrite the entire Nurses Ball.

Maxie Brings Gifts for Everyone

Anna’s in a hospital room, giving blood and on the phone with Robin, filling her in on the cardiac care center. Mac shows up to give Anna a ride home.

Deanna and Amy find Maxie in the hospital office with gift bags as a thank you to all the nurses. They thank her and she asks if they can help distribute them. Of course! Amy goes through one of the bags at the nurses’ station, amazed at the Deception swag, and Maxie says the nurses are more than worth it.

Felicia comes over, marveling at Maxie’s thoughtful present for the hospital’s anniversary. Then Stella shows up and Maxie hands both of them gift bags for themselves.

Tracy’s Grateful to Monica

We flash through the memorial photos on the wall as Tracy gazes fondly at them. Stella shows up, figuring she’d find Tracy there, with all that’s going on. Tracy admits she likes the quiet, and these loved ones can’t talk back. She tells Stella that Monica can’t make it, sadly, since the hospital wouldn’t be standing if it wasn’t for Monica.

Ned finds his mom at the wall, where she reflects on her dad pitting Alan and Tracy against each other. But then Alan committed the ultimate betrayal: becoming a doctor. She was always jealous of him following his dreams. But his choices — including Monica — got them entwined with the hospital, which she’s so grateful for.

In the Final Moments

Sonny finds Donna and Carly in the chapel, and the tot runs off to say a prayer for Michael. They’ve been there so much over the years, but Carly doesn’t associate the hospital with pain. There are so many happy memories, right up to the doctors saving Michael’s life. Sonny says Michael will pull through — because of us, Carly tells him when he says that’s all Carly’s influence.

In the new atrium, Laura breaks the news to Portia and Terry that Monica won’t be coming, so they’ll have to get started without her.

Anna finds Sonny out on the patio, saying she spoke with Robin and they talk a bit about Stone and how scared they were when Robin got HIV. She was so beautiful and brave, Sonny recalls as Anna laments she wasn’t there for Robin back then. But she wasn’t alone, Anna says, because of Sonny. She gives him a kiss from Robin and whispers “Thank you,” before heading in.

Sonny joins her as Terry and Portia unveil the Dr. Monica Quartermaine Cardiac Care Center. They say some kind words about how inspiring Monica is, then Laura delivers her speech commemorating the center and the hospital’s 62nd anniversary. “I believe that General Hospital represents us at our best.”

They unveil the sign, with a small photo of Monica. As everyone gazes proudly at it, Lucy bursts in, Sidwell in hand and tells them all that he’s agreed to be the sole underwriter of the Nurses Ball. Everyone looks incredibly uncomfortable and awkwardly clap to an oblivious Lucy.

Thank you for including my Yuri. I don't know about Gio dancing, but you can bet your last olive pit that he and his violin will be front and center.

Speaking of front and center...The story today was written to celebrate the 62nd anniversary of GH and to honor Leslie Charleston/Monica Quartermaine. What writer(s) thought it would be "cute" to have Lucy and Sidwell interlope on (most especially) honoring Leslie/Monica? Yes, it is like the Lucy character, but IMHO, not cute Frank!

Can't take the new LuLu these days...just a big mouth

cranky mess i think.......and i really like Cody...hope they don't hook those two up............i really feel the person who seems to be the matchmaker for the characters in this soap is the worst one GH has ever had...........keeps pairing people that just don't seem to have any chemistry...then very little romance after a few jr high school like scenes together........then romance cools down....and seems to fade and then we just don't care anymore..........what must these writers real lives be like????? haha.

Loved how Lucy just barged in on the cardiac unit dedication, with Sidwell in tow, and proceeded to hijack it and make it all about the Nurse's Ball (which I really was happy to hear about today BTW).

It was just SO Lucyish of her, lol.

I did appreciate Lucy's fashion rundown earlier in the show as part of her big pitch to Sidwell, poor man.

I DO love Lucy's gowns.

I figured maybe Sidwell stopped her and offered to underwrite the entire ball just to make her stop, lol.

I suppose he also hopes it will go a long way to ingratiate him with the rest of Port Charles.

I wonder if Lucy will end up as the next Mrs. Sidwell in a probably short lived union?

I have now been robbed of my Jack not only in love scenes, but in singing and dancing too. Will the pain ever end? 💔

If they throw up all the kids on stage and have them do their Tik Tok dances, the ball has offically jumped the shark. And MB better bring the llama again too.

And where was Felix yesterday? Felix, Marco, and Lucas need to do something. With Brad crashing the gig. That is comedy gold right there.

And I say this now... just because Sidwell is paying, please do not let this man host, strip, sing, dance, or otherwise make it his show. The only people allowed to take over the ball are Noah Drake, Ricky Martin (I think his name was Luis?), and Frisco Jones for obvious reasons.

Gio can put that violin down and watch how rock star is done. After crying for two or is it three years, no Q Thanksgiving, no Christmas story, no great storylines, the least Frank can do is let us all rock out.

LC would approve and so would we. 🤘🎸

And if Yuri doesn't strip down with maybe a cameo from Valentin ( he can do it handcuffs), we've been robbed again.

Yes, those gowns. On that note Lucy/Lynn...she's a pretty woman, and I always notice, she is, so far, choosing to age naturally, an anomoly in Hollywood. Either way, I've nothing against women who decide to take advantage of the "tweeks" that are out there, if it helps them look/feel better about how they look, but also nice to see someone pulling it off without it too...AND on camera.

So...what'd we all think of the 62 anniversary show?

Was underwhelming, to me...though it had some nice moments.

I liked the scene with Laura/Alexis...was very realistic, that Laura would feel exactly as she expressed, and, how Alexis feels about how to deal with it... it moves it forward too. I'm glad they addressed that this still would be something both women are learning how to navigate.

I bristled a little that Dr. Hardy and the older guard weren't even a blip of mention. I'm old school GH, I realize...but I think a 62nd anniversary, should always go all they way back...even if just a quick nod. I mean "Monica, Monica, Monica, Monica" "and Alan" "GH wouldn't be here if it wasn't for them"...they were next in line, but, they weren't EVERYthing. Dr. Hardy was "the man" long before that and for a long time. He always was mentioned in the past, should have been this time too.

I get it...they're leading up to losing Monica, and with losing Leslie in mind, and I've no issue with that...but if the name Monica was said ...one....more......time.....

but we do know, these writers aren't ones for "nuanced" writing.

Other than that...some scenes corny, some a bit touching.

All in all...Happy 62nd Anniversary GH!
