On TCM, who do you try and catch their movies?

I love old Betty Davis movies. Some Joan Crawford. Some Kathryn Hepburn.

But I love the sparkly gowns and jewelry they wore in those movies. I love the old homes with their staircases (so grand) and the walls were so high. Fireplaces in the bedrooms.

There's just something so warming about those movies.

What do you love about the old B & W movies?

For me it's not the stars,but the films. There are some that are little known,but big favs of mine.

I like some of the older movies every now and then too. Can't think of the names of all the actors but here is a few I enjoy.

I love It's a Mad Mad World. Cracks me up every time. Spencer Tracy

John Wayne in Quiet Man and lots of other movies

Maureen O'Hara

Casablanca

Humphrey Bogart

Lauren Bacall

African Queen with Katherine Hepburn

Lots of oldies I enjoy.

Bette would joke about being "The Staircase Queen" at Warners, so many famous or crucial scenes involving stairs. A few examples: The Letter, Deception, The Little Foxes, Now Voyager, Dark Victory.

I like the 60's and 70's movies the best. Klute, The Model Shop, Coming Home, Midnight Cowboy, etc.

@qualitygal Yes I do. I'm also a huge Bette Davis fan. In fact I like the exact same actors, gowns, everything that you do!

I really like what the hosts tell us before & after the movies.

Just curious, do you pick from your TV directory or is there an online schedule that shows what's coming up for the next month or so?

I can go on TCM and it shows movies coming up. There, I can set them up to record. No other guide other than what's on the tv.

@Tinkrbl44 I use Z TV Listings. You click on the station & it will show every show that will come on the station you picked for up to 30 days.

I use it for TCM, AMC & FXM only, so I can set up to record (if I can't find it on YouTube).

Oh, yeah, @qualitygal , for me it's directors, actors, AND types of films of the 30's, 40's and 50's.

Types of films: Film Noir and Melodrama. Noir for the atmosphere-- dark streets, dogged detectives, conflicted men, clever femmes fatales, mystery, shadows and rain.

Directors- I like Hitchcock, natch. Also Orson Welles. And other film noir greats like Robert Siodmak ( "The Dark Mirror", "Phantom Lady" "The Spiral Staircase"), Fritz Lang, ( "The Blue Gardenia", "The Big Heat"), Jacques Tourneur ( "Out of the Past", "Cat People") .

Actors- Cary Grant, Jimmy Cagney , Fred Astaire, Joseph Cotten, Jimmy Stewart, Laurence Olivier, Dana Andrews, Van Heflin

Actresses-- Barbara Stanwyck, Bette Davis, Claudette Colbert, Jean Arthur, Ida Lupino, Claire Trevor

Lana Turner, Gene Tierney, Bette, Joan are favorites but I enjoy watching all the glamour girls - Ava, Rita, Hedy, etc.

Especially enjoy Bette when she was pitted against other strong women like Miriam Hopkins & Mary Astor.

The men I like are Cary Grant, Dana Andrews, Paul Henreid, Claude Rains.

I also love Rock & Doris comedies & Rock & Gina in "Come September".

I think what draws me to the old B&W movies are the storyline and the actors.

The old movies often worked on building a story or suspense. The actors were the ones drawing you into the story. They didn't have special effects or huge car chase scenes or gun battles that went on and on.

Like Bobby Driscoll in the movie "The Window". He was a 12 years old boy and he was able to draw you into the suspense. No special effects - just him.

Or "Goodbye Mr. Chips" starring Robert Donat. Watching the schoolmaster and his life experiences through the years.

I would rather be drawn into a good story.

Bette Davis for sure. But I have enjoyed so many movies on TCM that I have never heard of and sometimes I have not heard of the actors either but they are very good. It is my go to channel
