I noticed that too. I flipped back and forth between the two channels for a little bit. Bottom line, what an evil piece of work his so called loving wife was.

I thought that was so odd - I was watching 20/20 and I knew the outcome of the story, it was not new, so I swiched to Dateline to be disappointed that they were doing the same story!

I hadn't heard of this story before but this lady had a good marriage with a great group of friends and she hears from her HS Boyfriend and completely threw everything away.

Lying to the boyfriend reminded me of true story Tall Hot Blond. He was also lied to by the so called THB and he killed one of his good friends.

Between the 2 shows, Dateline's presentation was much more thorough and detailed. Bottomline -- the wife is simply a horrible lowlife creature who deserves to sit in solitary confinement for the remainder of her life.

@Othereeeen I DEFINITELY saw this case before. I don't recall if it was on Dateline or 20/20 but it was aired before. That they ran it as a season premiere is a complete mystery to me. I have watched both these shows for YEARS and was very surprised that this situation was presented to the viewers,

Maybe someone else recalls on which show this was previously aired??

I also thought I saw this before because the husband's face looked so familiar to me.

The wife went to prison as she should have. I felt somewhat sorry for the "boyfriend" in that his PTSD didn't have an affect on the verdict. But then I was thinking if I heard from a guy that I dated decades ago and he started telling me how awful his wife treated him and how much I meant to him I would definitely block him from texting me. He lived hundreds of miles away and they made no attempt to meet in person. Yet he killed her husband.

He's in prison for the cold, premeditated, calculated murder of an innocent man.

This was a death penalty case. I suspect his TBI and other factors were taken into consideration for sentencing.

How different circumstance could have been if Lopez had not allowed his ego, wanting to play the white knight, to take a step back and thought about his own family, his own daughters and the impact of his actions on them.

Yes, she manipulated him, but the prudent thing would have been to contact law enforcement and forward all the emails to them so that they, the professionals, could have investigated a report of past and future domestic violence.

Her house of cards would have fallen apart, and an innocent man would still be living his life.

While one can sympathize with the fact that Lopez was led astray, does a TBI allow one to loose their moral compass?

@pdlinda, I believe the story had previously been shown on 48 Hours.

But Dateline does often update a crime as a new episode when a case has been adjudicated. He was sentenced in July.

He hadn't seen her for decades...when he did, at the time of the shooting,he went temporarily insane as he thought...

"I killed a man for THAT?!?!?!?!??...OMG what was I thinking?!?!??!"

Of course, the TBI excuse did NOT get him off in the long run...thank goodness.

Just two despicable people.

But....a warning to anyone to cowardly to just get a divorce.

I was just thinking as well why didn’t he report her intentions to authorities. For someone who was in the military perhaps something affected his mental ability?
