Marie Antoinette - New Series on PBS

New series (8 parts) premieres Sunday, 19 March at 10 PM, EST. (right after Sandition).

Marie Antoinette is just a teenager when she leaves Austria to marry the Dauphin of France. At Versailles, under the complex rules of the French court, she suffers from not being able to live her life the way she wants, under the pressure to continue the Bourbon line and secure the Franco-Austrian alliance.

I subscribe to Passport which streams PBS shows. I watched the preview for this program and will not watch any more of it. Marie Antoinette is shown in a "romantic" relationship with another woman Nothing is left to your imagination This seems to be a popular trend on many shows which feature nudity and explicit sexual situations. Not the PBS wholesome shows I'm used to.

yeah, been my gripe for a long time about historical figures.

If you was misfortunate enough to watch a Henry VIII

remake (not on PBS they had the best 1 from yrs ago)

on TV. It was just plain nasty.

They must think to get people to watch historical figures they have to sex it up and show explicit scenes of just about everything the mind can conjure.

Not true in my case, I just want movies based on FACT not some perverts idea of how people lived.

@SharkE , I do agree with what y'all are saying. I want the facts too. I'll be watching, but if it gets too much, I won't.

@1Snickers , WOW, Lucky you touring Versailles. I'll watch and see how it goes. Not too much on tv nowadays.

Each to their own. If one wants a documentary then best to find one because for better or for worse, shows created as entertainment are almost always going to juice things up to a degree these days.

I hate to bust the bubble of a lot of people who think that back in that time things were so bright and shiny and new like we see pictures of how it supposed to had looked back then.

BUT

truth is there was not any sanitation like we have today. People didn't bathe like we do today. Dogs and other animals had the run of the palace. Doing their business where they wanted too. The servants had the job of cleaning up the mess.

No bathrooms like we have today. Chamber pots that was emptied out the windows onto the folks below.

Women never washed their hair they wanted it thick with oil so they could stick hair decorations down in their hair and it not fall out. Those stupid men's wigs had fleas and everybody was doused with strong stinking perfumes to cover up any kind of odor.

People did their 'business' in any corner they could find. Alcoves were most convenient for men.

When you read the Queen or King were leaving on a pilgrimage that was so the servants could clean up the place and fumigate . Unsanitary conditions in the kitchen, no refrigeration to speak of, meat left out, etc.

I guess they drew water out of wells to wash the dishes.

Medical practices were barbaric. Surgeons didn't wash their hands before operations or delivering babies.

wonder anybody survived. No antibiotics, vaccines, made their own remedies.

I used to think what you saw on TV/movies about the rich uppercrust was so great, but, when you get into it

everybody was nasty. As to why they didn't bathe don't know if it was a matter of water supply or superstition that water on the body wasn't a good thing.

I"m sure they had fine fabrics and jewels, but, it would be kind of hard to bear if underneath it all that person hasn't had a bath or shampoo for months. LOL

@SharkE , WOW, what an interesting read. Thanks for posting this. Glad I didn't live back in those times. One thing I could not stand is to wear such heavy and puffy dresses and such....especially in the heat of summer. I would pass out.

@JCath You never watched "Masterpiece Theather" hosted by Alistair Cooke during the 70's?

Marie Antoinette docu is tame compared to the docu about George Sand called "Notorious Woman."

I've read at least three books about Marie Antoinette and she was an interesting person with a complex and in many ways difficult life.

Even more interesting perhaps is her mother, who had 16 children: 5 sons and 11 daughters. In 1740, Maria Theresa, at 23 years old, inherited the Habsburg throne. The crown lands included the Austrian duchies and Netherlands, and Bohemia and Hungary. Her childen were married off for power plays.

The whole saga of the Habsburgs isn't as simple as the "let them eat cake" story you hear bandied about. But it is fascinating.
