John Lennon's Lost Weekend Documentary

In movie theaters in April, a documentary about John Lennon's "lost weekend" called The Lost Weekend: A Love Story. This is a time when, after they married, Yoko kicked John Lennon out of the house and they separated. Before she did so, she asked Lennon's assistant, May Pang, to be his "companion." May lived with him and, as she says in the trailer for the doc, "I was 23 years old and my first live-in boyfriend was John Lennon." They were together for about 18 months when Yoko decided she wanted John back.

As a Beatles fan who vaguely remembers when this occurred, I intend to see this. Julian Lennon comments in the film. If interested, Google the trailer online. The film has gotten great reviews.

It sounds like a definite watch! I always thought highly of John Lennon and his life was sadly cut short, I can imagine how much more he would have done musically.

I do not know anything about this part of Lennon's life with the young lady. Maybe at the time things were more discreet and no one's business. But since the documentary will be out and I am a Beatles fan I am curious enough to want to see it. Thanks for the heads up on this one, Pearlee. It will be interesting to hear Julian's comments.

I read some more about this documentary. It was shown at the 2022 Tribeca Film Festival. On Rotten Tomatoes it had no audience rating yet but has a 100% "Thermometer" rating from the critics who reviewed it. I read just a couple of the reviews and learned May says Yoko wanted to keep Julian away from John. Yoko instructed May not to tell John that 10 yr old Julian had called and left John messages. John at times was phyically abusive to May and apologized later. May possibly has the last photos ever taken of John and Paul McC together, since they visited together in NYC (in the movie trailer, there is a funny story about John and Paul and their taxis in NYC).

Anyway, reading about it makes me want to see it even more. And there is commentary in the doc from Paul! 🥰

Thanks for the heads-up @Pearlee! John was always my fav Beatle. I was very young at the time of the Lost Weekend but remember reading about it in the late 70's.

May Pang wrote a book called "Loving John" but it was out of print by the time I wanted to read it and I still can't find a copy. Maybe it will be re-released when the doc comes out...one can only hope! 🙂

A kinda funny story that happened during this time involves a sanitary pad. John was in a club drunk on Brandy Alexanders with Harry Nielson and was seen with one stuck to his forehead. LOL

They are still around. I just searched it on Ebay and a handful of copies came up, starting around $50. Didn't try Amazon.

I always wonder why all these years later, people decide to reveal these personal parts of famous people's lives who have passed. I am sure money is involved but also in this case perhaps Yoko had input. I don't know. While I want to see the documentary I also feel some things should be private despite John being a public figure. Just my thoughts.

I really don't have much interest in anything Beatles now. It was so far in the distant past. I certainly don't want to hear about a lost weekend.

I know a lot of people are very interested in the 1960's but to me it is lost ancient history. I feel like at my age, looking forward is better use of what time I have left. Any others in that state of mind?

When The Beatles came to America I was a baby so I missed out. 😒 I became very interested in their music and 1960's culture later in the 70's. I vaguely remember when John got his green card.

Thank you for the heads up on this @Pearlee . I have a special interest in this time period.

My girl friend and I visited San Diego in 1974 to see another girl friend of ours who had graduated high school with us in Illinois. We were all of 19 years old. Too young to go the bars in California.

Rumors were flying that John Lennon was in the area, but I didn't believe it. We even went to a house party where he had supposedly stayed the weekend before and the rumor was that he would be there again. Lot of people there!

We never saw him, but what a strange party it was! The lights all went out, so no wonder we didn't see him. Those other two were always convinced that he was there, and that's why the lights all went out suddenly, then came back on. Then everyone was told to go!

About 40 years later, after reading "The Love You Make" (quoting from "The Lives of John Lennon") I found out about the Lost Weekend and that he actually was in the area during that time.

It was funny, because I read The Lives of John Lennon twice, and didn't catch it. I read over that paragraph in The Love You Make two or three times, realizing "Hey! Wait a minute!" that's when I was there!

I have been curious about The Lost Weekend ever since. I'll be watching out for it!

Like so many things with John and Yoko, it strikes me as a bit odd ball, but interesting. I watched the trailer and she seems a lovely woman. But.....the whole idea of such an arrangement poses many questions.

Whhoohoo! I was concerned that this documentary wouldn't be shown in my city but it opens Thursday here. It's at an artsy movie house that is the closest movie theater to my home but I rarely go there because the parking situation isn't good. I'm going to see this though!

Checked theaters in my area and it's only playing in the city. Too much of a hassle to get there, so hoping it will be on Prime or Netflix soon.

I have seen some good reviews so I'm crossing my fingers.
