Dr Phil is Calling it Quits….sort of

Dr. Phil’s talk show is officially ending following the 2022-2023 season after 21 years on the air.

The daytime talk show host Phil McGraw signed a five-year contract with CBS Media Ventures in 2018 and won’t be re-signing, as People reported.

“I have been blessed with over 25 wonderful years in daytime television,” McGraw said in a statement.

“With this show, we have helped thousands of guests and millions of viewers through everything from addiction and marriage to mental wellness and raising children. This has been an incredible chapter of my life and career, but while I’m moving on from daytime, there is so much more I wish to do.”

“I am compelled to engage with a broader audience because I have grave concerns for the American family, and I am determined to help restore a clarity of purpose as well as our core values,” he continued.

Stepping back doesn’t mean leaving television for the 72-year-old host, however. CBS confirmed that McGraw would be part of a “strategic primetime partnership” that aims to help him “increase his impact on television and viewers.”

More details of that project, which is expected to be released in 2024, are forthcoming.

McGraw rose to popularity in the 90s after multiple appearances on “The Oprah Winfrey Show” as a featured expert. He went on to launch his own talk show in 2002, which became a daytime staple. The publication noted that Dr. Phil has hosted almost 4,000 episodes featuring 20,000 guests after more than two decades on the air.

President of CBS Media Ventures Steve LoCascio reacted to the show ending by saying, “Phil is a valued partner and member of the CBS/King World family, and while his show may be ending after 21 years, I’m happy to say our relationship is not.”

“Phil changed the daytime landscape as the force behind one of the most popular talk shows ever on daytime TV,” he continued. “We plan to be in the Dr. Phil business with the library for years to come and welcome opportunities to work together in the future.”

Several other daytime television mainstays have also announced cancellations recently, including “The Wendy Williams Show,” “The Ellen DeGeneres Show,” “Dr. Oz,” and “The Real.”

It's time. He has become stale. I just wish he and Robin would fade into the sunset permanently.

We just had a discussion about him hopefully leaving, here recently.

Guess he won't be getting kickbacks from all the treatment centers he sends people to, all of which "are the best"! I've watched this mess a few times.

Why people will go on national TV with their dirty laundry is beyond me. Glad to see the back of both of them.

@Kachina624 I was a faithful viewer for many years. Then I started to really dislike him. I haven't watched in a long, long time. If it happened to me, I have to wonder how many out there are like me and maybe his viewship is down. It's in his best interest to end the show himself before the networks decides.

I lost all respect for him after he interviewed Shelley Duvall - she was obviously delusional and he took full advantage of that.

As for Robin - I hate the way she dresses - very gimmicky particular those hooker spike heeled boots. With all that money, I would think she would hire a stylist.

He deserves to retire. He should. I think the last couple of seasons have been lackluster and he was just not into it anymore.

I liked Dr Phil in the beginning. He seemed to really care.I stopped watching some years back ,because he became too commercial. He started playing to the shock value & the ratings.

Robin also jumped on the bandwagon with all of her botox and plastic surgery. They both became caricatures of themselves.

I think it's time he take his millions & Robin with him, and retire.

chick loves her black clothes. She weighs 70 pounds don't know what she's trying to minimize.

Was never a fan of Dr Phil's show. It was like Jerry Springer without the chair-throwing. Not interested in hearing anyone's dirty laundry aired publicly, but apparently people will spill all of their private business if the price is high enough.

Why is Robin part of the show? Just to be on tv to show off the latest procedure? I think people would like her more if she had a wrinkle or two and had a stylist to help her select clothes that would flatter her. She tries too hard, and she doesn't need to.
