American Idol turns 20

The New season of American Idol starts on February 27th on ABC. Judges Luke Bryan, Katy Perry, and Lionel Richie. Host Ryan Seacrest.

My favorite season was season 8 with Adam Lambert in 2009. I watched every week because Adam was so good,

The only other season I watched every week was The first season of American Idol premiered on June 11, 2002 (under the full title American Idol: The Search for a Superstar). It was won by Kelly Clarkson.

I have not watched it now for about 5 years... just seems boring to me, and the judges seem to take over the show with their antics and drama. Seems so phony.

I watched American Idol for the first 5 seasons. After that I lost interest. It's not always the winner who becomes the most successful in the music industry.

@SeaMaiden I love Adam Lambert. Great talent. And Kelly Clarkson has always been a favorite. Yes the judges get a little over the top. Maybe Ryan Seacrest will add something new. I really like The Voice too ....especially with Kelly C. and John Legend as judges.

I am not being a viewer of the show, but there are a few names such as Kelly Clarkson who have gone on to national fame from their appearance. I have a question, wasn't Jennifer Hudson one of the Idol contestants and did she lose to Clarkson or Carrie Underwood? Thanks

I never watched the show, but Justin Guarini, who was a runner up on the show, lives two doors down from my friend.

Jennifer Hudson was around season three and finished about eigth. She wasn't in Kelly's season and I don't think she was in Carrie's season. I remember now, she was in Fantastia's season.

My late DH and I watched the first 3 seasons and only the auditions. We found so many of them to be either pitiful or hilarious. Honestly, some of those who tried out couldn't carry a tune in a bushel basket.

The last time I watched American Idol was when Ruben Studdard won (2nd season???). That was when I thought the show was "fixed." Clay Aiken came in 2nd. I thought he should have won.

By then I thought the show was too sassy during the auditions....

Too many contestants living in cars.

Too many contestants living in shelters.

I walked 100 miles to get to the auditions.

And the list goes on. It was like they were all reading from the same script. Just one big pity party that did NOT work for me>>>

I used to watch A.I. a long time ago. I think I wached more drama after Adam Lambert won. He was so talented and so much fun!!!

I remember when Chris Daughtry left early. I knew he was so good he was probably under contract.

Carrie Underwood's audition was wonderful.

Jennifer Hudson, so talented; remember she lost her mother, bless her heart. That woman reared a beautiful young lady!

DH and I will watch; however, the ones I miss the most were the very early seasons. Back then, it seemed to be more about the contestants and not the judges bantering.

I do like Lionel, however, Katy and Luke could easily be replaced with others IMO.

We used to watch the Voice, but not anymore as that show has turned into "all about the coaches" IMO. And rarely do we ever hear about anything of the winner.

I do watch AI when nothing else is on but that's about it.

@HisElk1 , I used to watch The Voice, too, but stopped watching for the same reason. I could tolerate it with the original judges but some of the ones they've added I just can't watch for any period of time.

Adam Lambert didn't win. He was the runner up to Kris Allen.

IMHO, Adam should have won. He clearly had more talent...what has Kris Allen done since he won AI almost 13 years ago?? After this unjustified upset, I never watched AI again.

With that being said, it's probably a good thing Adam didn't win. He was able to record the kind of music and make the albums he wanted to make and not be under contract to AI. He dictated his career, not AI.

I can remember during the auditions when Carrie Underwood walked out on stage and sang. I said to my husband, "that girl is going to win it all." And she did. But Clay Aiken was my all time favorite. Wonder what he's doing these days.

Carrie Underwood is amazing ! I still love watching her and listening to her songs . A real lady . I saw her audition and when she was on AI so long ago . She has really done well for herself . Carrie ,Adam and Jennifer are the only ones I really remember , probably because they are still around on tv and concerts etc .

I keep trying to watch but I just keep losing interest. I don't like the judges as in my opinion they are not really judging. They just say every one is so great and how wonderful they are. I miss the days were the judges were honest. And the songs they sing now, I have never heard before. I used to be a real fan but it's just not the same anymore.

I used to look forward to AI...and I don't watch much tv. The talent was amazing and it was fun to determine the big win. Sometimes Simon Cowell would offer suggestions to a contestant and a stunning transformation would occur. Sometimes the most unexpected magical art would come forth from a most unexpected contestant. The competition was replete with talent. Adam Lambert was exciting to watch and vastly gifted.

It is surprising...so many talented people waiting to be discovered and they sure aren't on AI anymore. I have stopped watching.

i am still a fan of the show and i rarely miss an episode.

i am ready and waiting for season 20 to begin! cannot wait!
