If you've never seen it 1957's A Face in the Crowd stars Andy Griffith as a not likeable fellow in his pre-Mayberry days. Also starring Patricia Neal, directed by Elia Kazan. Definitely worth watching.

His finest 2 hours, IMO. And PN is her usual excellent self. Definitely a movie worth watching.

This film is the first time I had seen Andy Griffith in something other than the sheriff in Mayberry. I was really surprised. He was so good in this and so believable. I will definitely be watching. Great to see him in another role than Sheriff Taylor.

Definitely one of the Academy's most glaring omissions.

1957 was a tough year for Best Actor nominations. No Henry Fonda for "12 Angry Men." No Burt Lancaster or Tony Curtis for "Sweet Smell of Success."

All were worthy, in my opinion. But there are only 5 slots

@Witchy Woman Great comment; it's definitely timeless.

As Andy Taylor, Griffith played guitar and sang quite a bit, and did so a few times as Matlock, most memorably in two different epis with Randy Travis. Once you see this film, that's not surprising.

Then, on the other end of the spectrum, Andy G. was fab in the 1958 film, "No Time for Sergeants" with Nick Adams and many others.

It's about as silly as you can get.

He was good in almost anything, but as "Lonesome" Rhodes he was downright scary.

@Witchy Woman He was terrific in anything. Even when he was quite elderly, he stole the film Waitress. If you've never seen that, I highly recommend it. I didn't go to Imdb to check but that may have been his last role and he was wonderful in it. I loved that film a d have the DVD.
