TCM Sinking To A New Low

They've been going downhill in what they consider 'classics' for a few years now, but I'm not sure they can go much lower than this ... next Saturday, they're showing 'Silent Night, Deadly Night' a 1984 slasher movie.

I've never seen it, but I do not like violent, gory movies. Honestly, I cannot even stand looking at an ugly gargoyle.

Exactly my point. I love horror/monster/paranormal movies ... but there's no such thing as a good slasher movie, much less a classic slasher movie.

TCM is quickly going the way of AMC and their 'new classics'. I can't remember the last time I watched anything on AMC.

I've started recording the real classic movies I like before TCM stops showing them for good.

There are new channels popping up all the time, so I'm hoping a new classic movie channel will come along soon.

I love horror, supernatural, ghost stories but I hate slasher movies. They are filled with such violence, are gory and for me not watchable. These movies are far from classics, and shouldn't be mixed in with movies which are true classics and timeless entertainment.

I am doing the exact same thing. I'm loading up my DVR with my favorite classic movies in anticipation of changes to TCM that would exclude me as a viewer.

Lately, I've seen changes to TCM's programming offering movies I have absolutely no interest in seeing.

There is absolutely no single authoritative definition of what a "classic" film is. Based upon age, films of the 1980s would most definitely meet my definition and TCM is airing them more frequently as part of its mission.

Of course, I can't imagine that everyone is interested in every single film programmed by TCM.

I fully support the branching out into films of all ages and genres. I love that they are introducing unusual, obscure and/or new fare.

(And anything is better than the 110th airing of "North By Northwest".)

I agree, not just the one movie, but pure trash (IMO). I check their schedule and dont tune in much anymore. Every once in a while they will show a few good ones, that I like.

Interesting background on this film. It is a psychological thriller along the lines of Psycho. It was pulled shortly after a successful release due to the controversy over the disturbing portrayal of Santa Clause. You may or may not want to watch this type of film, but I do support our right of choice.

@Johnnyeager Agree 100%. I do not know what the OP considers "classic" but TCM shows many, many movies that are not "classics." I applaud the fact that it has begun showing more recent films (less than 30 years old!!) and more variety of movies.

We're it not for TCM we would not be able to view a larger number of important movies uninterrupted and more importantly, intact and unedited. Unless, of course, you were able to find a DVD.

@Shelbelle For every movie someone may consider "trash" TCM shows dozens and dozens of worthwhile films. IMO, TCM is one of only a handful of TV stations that are worthwhile. My only criteria for choosing a cable company is whether it carries TCM.

That is why I am thrilled to find numerous other stations that show classic movies. I find I am watching TCM less and less because I would much rather see the movies that the other stations are showing.

I used to be a frequent visitor to the TCM Message Board. And just like any message board there were negative comments. A common one at the time I would visit the site was that TCM was showing too many movies in Black & White. And that they were going to stop watching TCM.

I can't help but think TCM is trying to appeal to a larger audience. So that is why it is now showing movies from the 1980s and 90s. And many of the movies they are now showing do not appeal to me. So I find I am moving to other stations. But I am no longer the demographic they are trying to impress.

I just took a look-see at what they show (not a big movie fan) and it's an odd mix, but then movies always have been.

I might tune in for Bell, Book and Candle! And I had an uncle would have been simply glued to the set for those old Tarzan movies he loved so much! That and King Kong! We would watch them together at their house and laugh and laugh!

Lately when I want to watch a new (or old) movie I go to Kanopy... movie streaming service from the library. If you have a library card be sure and check out their selection of films. Fantastic! Movies you will not find ANYWHERE else.
