Smooth jazz radio station

I am so thrilled to have just discovered that there is still a smooth jazz (sj) station (FM) in existence in my area. Unfortunately, it's not local enough to actually hear it on my radio (I do not have satellite, or any other upgrades of that sort). But while I am on the computer, it is available. Somehow it means more to listen to a local station than to simply tune in to one that is just online (which I have done, but it does not feel the same for some reason).

I remember in the 90s they were so popular. I used to go to many concerts all around the SF Bay area. Many people I know were quite upset when all of a sudden they shut down the sj stations only to switch to older rock. There were already plenty of rock stations.

Smooth jazz filled a niche in that you could listen and feel calm yet alive. The djs were also respectful and classy. I like to say that smooth jazz is to music like green tea is to beverages. It's that combo of caffeine and L-theanine, you know!

I know - there are none on the local airwaves where I am, but there used to be a good one. Nice Sunday brunch show, and a yearly festival at a local amphitheater.

I stream Pandora now, but I agree, it's nice to have a local station. I miss it. I kept it on all day long for my dogs. Now they listen to classical, but really, they're not big opera fans.

I was also using Pandora but they tend to sneak in other genres more often than I like. (I just use the free version.) I felt bad giving them all those "thumbs-down."

Maybe the fact that this station still exists means the genre will have a resurgence. I am ever hopeful!

You can find a lot of radio stations on tunein whether just going to .com or the tunein app

It's great to find a good radio station! We stream Pandora and my current favorite is their Cool Jazz station. Instant relaxation.

@GingerPeach: Agreed! I use the free version of Pandora, also, and last night I had "calm relaxation" on and it seemed to go totally off the rails. Then if you do too many "thumbs down" they will curtail you. I guess they want a paid subscription - can't say as I blame them.

I would love to see more SJ stations, but it's all about the advertising money and I guess they just can't compete. Too bad. Maybe it would be a calmer world with some calm music.

It's nice to find a kindred spirit concerning the smooth jazz genre.

I didn't realize Pandora would curtail you if you gave them too many thumbs-down. On the other hand, I try to give them plenty of thumbs-up for the ones I do like.

Diana Krall's Peel Me a Grape just came on. Yummy!

Smooth jazz is my favorite type of music. When I went for an MRI last year, they asked me what type of music I wanted to listen to during the test. I asked if he had cool jazz, and he went further and asked me if I liked instrumentals or vocals or a mix. Wow I was impressed!

We used to have a few great smooth jazz FM stations here in NY but they're gone now. I forgot that I can listen to it online. I'm going to have to remember that and start looking around.

I adored the smooth jazz station in our area during the 90's and early 2000's. I think it went by the name of "The Wind..." And yes, one day it was suddenly gone, with no notice. Very distressing. I'd love to find another one!

Peter White, Boney James, the Rippingtons, Larry Carlton, FourPlay, Diana Krall, Basia, and more.

They even threw in a little Booker T playing "Green Onions.

I love the combo of calmness blended with liveliness and energy.

Interesting you should mention Sanborn. The station played one of his shortly after my last post. It wasn't "Chicago Song" though. Darn. But more days ahead!

I don't have any local smooth jazz stations. I do have digital TV cable and get a smooth jazz station through my cable package. I call it Cheesecake Factory Jazz, because that's often the kind of music they play at the Cheesecake Factory restaurants.

I guess Cheesecake Factory knows what sells.

The first time I ever went to one, I was expecting something small and simple like they show on "Big Bang Theory." I was surprised to find it felt like walking into a Vegas casino - very fancy with tall columns and padded booths with tall potted palms all over. Although I must say I did not notice the music they were playing. It was kind of noisy.

I also wanted to add that my tv cable provider has music stations too, including the smooth jazz genre. I tried that but it's not the same as having a local station with a real dj along with local news and weather and such. I like that local connection.

In the Dallas-Fort Worth area we used to have a smooth jazz station called The Oasis. I listened to it all the time. It's hard to believe in a metropolitan area of this size, there isn't a single smooth jazz station.

I have lots of the artists' CDs loaded into iTunes and listen to them at work. I enjoy the music of Boney James, Diana Krall, Chris Botti, Joe Sample, Dave Koz, and many, many others.

I so enjoy Smooth Jazz. It is calming and can be romantic as well. Don't know where you live but I do have a station that features it on Sundays during the hours of brunch. Also, it's on satellite to listen to as well. On Direct TV it's in the 800's somewhere. Have a nice drink and listen to some smooth jazz.
