I thought there was a thread about this already but I couldn't find it, forgive me if there was. This is about David Berkowitz a serial killer who terrorized NYC from 1976 to 1977. This case has always fascinated me, I though I knew everything there was to know, he was a monster. After seeing this four part doc, I'm not so sure. There is this journalist Maury Terry who makes it his life's mission to find out the truth. He is obsessed and it consumes him, spending about 16 years of his life on this. Maury doesn't think Berkowitz acted alone and thinks he was involved in a Satanic Cult.

@Jordan2 I just subscribed to Netflix last month and watched this. I found that Maury Terry's theory was intriguing. Guess we'll never know if he is correct.

The series definitely held my attention. I would recommend watching it.

My sister recommended this documentary since we lived across the river from NY and was appalled and frightened by this evil killer as we followd the story in the news.

I remember being alone at my country home in the mountains and hearing Son of Sam was in NJ headed toward a County not far away. I don't remember the details but I remember being so scared, alone in the house and to top it a thunder storm!!!! Of course I don't know if this was even true, him headed here, but it was enough for me to react. Berkowiz was finally caught after murdering several people.

He is and has been in jail where he belongs. I heard he used to hear voices telling him to kill or something insane like that. He could have belonged to a Satanic cult. Bottom line, he murdered innocent people and gave much pain to their families. I hope he rots in jail.

@Jordan2 I have this on my watch list on Netflix. Have not watched yet.

I grew up in NY and remember this time. We were teenagers then and my parents were concerned when we ventured out at night.

I read the book Maury Terry wrote. It was a fascinating and interesting book. I could not put it down. I still have it. I always felt he was correct and there was more than one.

I will watch this weekend.

One of his first victims was my close friends cousin. This was a scary time for young women in the NY area.

I lived in one of the boroughs at the time.

I had long brown hair and cut it really short because didn't drive and used public transportation to get to and from work.

It was scary.

I lived in NYC during this time. I recall them referring to him as the 44 Caliber Killer, then the Son of Sam. I never understood where they got this moniker from, but it was definitely a scary time to be a woman in New York.

He would sneak up on couples out on dates and kill them. I thought he died in prison though. I hope he never sees the light of day ~ ever again.

His name was really David Falco. He was adopted too...

David Berkowitz, byname Son of Sam, original name David Falco, (born June 1, 1953, Brooklyn, New York, U.S.), American serial killer who murdered six people in New York City in 1976–77. His crimes plunged the city into a panic and unleashed one of the largest manhunts in New York history.

Berkowitz was a difficult and occasionally violent child. His erratic behaviour, which began after the death of his adoptive mother in 1967, intensified when his adoptive father remarried in 1971 and moved to Florida without him. In 1971 Berkowitz joined the army, and he became an excellent marksman before he left the service in 1974. According to Berkowitz’s diary, he set some 1,500 fires in New York City in the mid-1970s.

Claiming he was driven by demons, Berkowitz attempted to murder a woman in December 1975, but she survived several stab wounds. He then murdered a woman in July 1976, and over the next year he attacked several couples, claiming five more victims. During his killing spree, he sent letters to New York newspapers, signing them “Son of Sam,” a reference to a demon he believed lived inside the black Labrador retriever owned by his neighbour Sam Carr.

I just binged all four episodes since yesterday. This documentary is well done. I don't buy the idea that Berkowitz didn't act alone or that he was part of a cult. I do think his references to the Carrs in one of his letters means he knew them or knew about them. He sure is a manipulative SO*. I think that the guy conducting his interview asked completely leading questions.
