Anna Faris Is Leaving Sitcom Mom

I just read the show goes back into production on September 14, but Anna Faris won't be returning. She is still under contract, so I'm surprised the show is letting her leave. I don't know how the show will survive without her.

I love that show! Why would she leave a successful show? She is great on it, the chemistry with all of the actors is wonderful.

WOW, I'm totally shocked!!!

I don't see how the show can survive without her. As talented and wonderful as the rest of the cast are, she and Allison Janney ARE the show.

Too bad they couldn't give her character a nice send off after seven years.

In a major shakeup, CBS’ sitcom Mom is losing one of its two title characters. Anna Faris will not be returning to the series for its upcoming eighth season, leaving Allison Janney as the sole lead.

The move is surprising. Both Faris and Janney are in the middle of two-year contracts they signed in spring 2019 after lengthy negotiations. Their new deals secured a two-year renewal for the Chuck Lorre comedy through Season 8.

I hear Faris’ exit was finalized early into the show’s hiatus, and the writers have been writing the new season without her character, Christy. Her absence will be addressed in the upcoming season, which is slated to start production September 14 in Los Angeles.

“The past seven years on Mom have been some of the most fulfilling and rewarding of my career,” Farris said. “I’m so thankful to Chuck, the writers, and my amazing castmates for creating a truly wonderful work experience. While my journey as Christy has come to an end, allowing me to pursue new opportunities, I’ll be watching next season and rooting for my TV family.”

“From the inception of Mom, Anna was the first and only choice for the role of Christy,” WBTV, CBS and Chuck Lorre Prods. said in a statement. “We are so proud of the stories we have been able to tell during Anna’s seven years with us. We wish Anna all the best, and we thank her for her beautiful portrayal.”

Seven seasons in, Mom remains a solid ratings performer as one of TV’s top comedy series among total viewers. What’s more, Mom also is a rare sitcom that tackles important issues. Its seven seasons to date focused on daughter/mother duo Christy (Faris) and Bonnie Plunkett (Janney), who, after having been estranged for years while both were struggling with addiction, attempt to pull their lives and their relationship together by trying to stay sober.

The show had one episode left to shoot from its seventh season when the COVID-related Hollywood shutdown suspended all production in mid-March.

In addition to Janney, Mom stars Mimi Kennedy, Jaime Pressly, Beth Hall, William Fichtner and Kristen Johnston. It is executive produced by Lorre, Nick Bakay, Baker and Warren Bell.

I think the show will survive without her. Never cared for her character. The whole show is Allison Janney. I also enjoy watching the supporting cast.

When Roseanne was fired the show was renamed The Connors. I didn't think it would make it but it did.So it's possible with good writing Mom can be re invented & succced too.

It's a funny show, but I can also see where the role might have run its course and especially for her as an actress. Truth be told, I think the supporting cast are often the backbone of the show and are under utilized. If done right, they can fill in any of the gaps created by her departure. The show has been consistently well done, if a bit on the raunchy side at times, so one might assume they'll be able to pull this off with the solid cast they have left and possibly with guest stars or maybe cast additions. The show has shifted focus several times already and has remained solid.

I think Allison Janney and the supporting cast will do fine. Anna Farris is talented , but her character was annoying, at least to me.

We love that show too. Although I am sorry to see Anna Farris leave, I believe that the show will still be entertaining and successful. It is a true ensemble cast in the likes of Barney Miller. When Fish left that show, it still was great, just takes some time getting used to. The same happened when Jack Soo, the character Yamana, died the show continued. It's all in the writing.

Anna Farris started out as the star of the show, Allison Janney became very popular and was like a co-star. Fish to me was more of a secondary character, if Hal Linden had left the show it may have suffered.

This is one of my very favorite shows and it will not be good without her. It probably wont last once she leaves. She is such a big part of this show.

I was just thinking about this show last night, not knowing that Anna wasn't going to be returning, and wondering what would happen to the character of Christie.

I imagined that she would get a law job in a city out of the area (S.F.?)

Or maybe they'll have her fall off the wagon and go to rehab.

If you look at the history of the show overall, there have been a number of incarnations. Violet and her various love interests came and went, as did Baxter and his new wife, as did Roscoe and as have several of Christy and Bonnie's love interests and Christy's co-workers, along with various other AA participants, including Regina and Steve... and so on... While the Christy role has been central to all of them, I do think they can make it work without her. Marjorie, Jill and Wendy are a sort of glue that has long helped hold the show together, and I think they can make it work with them, together with Bonnie's husband and possibly Tammy, along with guests and recurring characters...

I'm going to throw this out there. Don't shoot the messenger.

When she got divorced pretty much all of my rag magazines said they divorced because she wanted more children and HE didn't.

I have to wonder if she isn't doing well because I always got the feeling she didn't want a divorce.

Now he's remarried and having a baby with a much younger (I think she is) woman.

If any of it is true, these people are human and maybe she's having problems with some of this. Reading between the lines, I keep reading where she has a new significant other and she'd like to have another baby.

I have no idea (none of us do) if any of this is true. Most rag magazines make stuff up because they know the people involved just ignore the story.

I hope it's all made up because I've always thought it would be terrible to love someone and have them be involved with another and then do things with the new partner they wouldn't do with you.

@Pearlee Yes, I read that too. OMG! My daughter came here for 5 months to organize my house and help me because I broke my back.

Why am I mentioning this? Well because if anyone gets annoyed at me mentioning all of these rag magazines it's because when she'd go to the store.....she'd buy everyone she saw. A few of them I'd never even heard of!

I only watched a couple of episodes of this show... found it rather stupid. TheDaughter acts so dense as does the Mother.. I guess to seem funny. But over and over again the stupidity is just tiresome. I am surprised the show is still on.

I love the show and especially liked Anna Faris.

Her ex-husband dumped her when he became a big star and she turned 40. They had a very young child and then he married a young Kennedy.

I hope she does phenomenally well in her future.
