Kimble has once again been an itinerant farm worker, the sort of job that was readily available to a transient individual not wanting to stay in one place for long. He'd been there long enough for the others to sense his giftedness with the sick, however. A worried couple show up and manage to press him into coming to a remote cabin look at their little boy in distress, and then he finds out the full story....

This one, if I can remember enough, I'm sort of neutral on-- but have been wrong before! It is indeed suspenseful. Ubiquitous Sixties' actor Claude Akins is powerful in his usual 'tough guy' role. He was so good at this-- he was also fantastic as a cunning, sociopathic police officer in a memorable "Cannon" episode....

An aside: In my background reading, I came across the fact that Akins chafed a bit at his usual typecasting. It also mentioned in passing that he was a frequent chess partner with his friend, fellow actor William Windom. I love little details like this-- the wry, rather patrician Windom and burly Claude Akins, good buddies and going at it in chess!

Have mentioned Joanna Moore several times as appearing in the Fuge-- turns out, she was in at least 3 episodes.

She had a rather fragile beauty and of course, that distinctive, throaty voice, which were to be replicated somewhat in that of her daughter, Tatum O'Neal.

@Pearlee, I was amused to read that there's a certain fight scene in the film, in which it is apparently clear for an instant that it is a stunt double doing the fisticuff honors! Thought of you immediately and your past observations on that. If for no other reason, I would watch now to catch that little moment. Am surprised the continuity folks, or whoever was in charge of stuff like that, didn't catch it at the time...

Hang on gang, next week one of my favorite "Fugitives", with the luminous young Shirley Knight and some long-time film noir luminaries as well! Sort of noirish, Southern Gothic episode....

Ah yes, another migrant farm worker job for Kimble and yet another chance for him to use his medical skills to tend to someone in need. 🙂
😄 about the fight scene. I don't recall it but will certainly look for it now! I do just remember generally that throughout the series the stunt double has been obvious at times (fighting or rolling down hills in a longshot).

Interesting about Akins who always reminds me of Charles Bronson. He was in quite a few early Murder She Wrote episodes before Windom became a regular as Seth Hazlitt so I wonder now if Akins helped get his chess buddy that gig.

Yes Joanna Moore had a brief tempestuous marriage to Ryan O'Neal with whom she had children Tatum and Griffin. I do think Tatum bears a strong resemblance to her. This was before Ryan met Farrah Fawcett.

Oh, @drizzellla , I do hope your pup isn't too upset. I'm imagining it's the firecrackers that set him off? Poor baby. Our 3 indoor kitties love to congregate on our back screened-in utility porch after dark, but they got spooked and bewildered with all the noise the other night and had to run right back in...

@Pearlee, that they seemed to use doubles so much in this series does surprise me, slightly. By all accounts, Janssen was quite athletic and often actors like that, even if just for ego purposes, like to do at least some of their own stunts... But I guess the studio couldn't risk anything messing up their glamour boy's sweet puss, ha.

It's interesting b/c Mike Connors in "Mannix" seemed to be one who liked to do some stunts-- he had so many perilous situations and they show one scene in the intro of every episode, the famous one where he had to jump, roll and aim his gun, and in real life he apparently dislocated his shoulder in that scene... He must have winced every time he saw it!

Wow, I never realized it until you said it, but yes, Claude Akins is reminiscent of Bronson!

To the newbies watching this show now...I don't think you have as yet seen Kimble as a migrant worker as many times as @Oznell and I have over the course of all four seasons.Given our previous comments on this thread you might be thinking "what other migrant worker shows?" Believe me there are quite more to come. More construction jobs too.

Oh, yeah, @Pearlee , maybe he hasn't been in many yet this season. In fact, I can only remember the one with Beverly Garland, where she was a nurse in the migrant camp, and Kimble gets drawn into helping her....

You are right. I think this may be the 10th episode I have watched.

First episode I ever watched, he was working as a helper for a boxer. It was the 6th episode titled "Decision in the Ring".

I remember Joanna Moore appearing in a few Andy Griffith episodes where she played a very sweet Southern nurse. She was beautiful, but did have a troubled life with drugs, etc. and then died young.

Twinsister - Boy you weren't kidding about Joanna Moore's troubled life. When she was 7 her family was involved in a car accident. Her Mom and Sister died immediately and her Dad died a year later from injuries from the car accident. She was adopted by a family and changed her name from Dorothy to Joanna.

@twinsister, I read something interesting about Joanna Moore. She had early tragedy in her life- her mother and baby sister were killed in an accident, and her father died months later from injuries he had sustained in it.

Alcohol and drugs became preoccupations for her, and as you say, her life was sad. Interestingly, her grandson, Tatum's child--whose last name is McEnroe but whose first name escapes me-- was very close to her. He has written a work of fiction (I think, not a real life memoir) based on her, called "Dorothy", I think, which was her real first name...

Thought it was remarkable and sweet of him to want to commemorate her that way...

I remembered this show pretty well and like it.
I thought DJ expressed his disdain for Moore and Akins very well, esp Moore's values of loving sable etc over the boy's welfare. I aslo liked Kimble's "you're married?" line. Remember thus is the early 1960s when a woman who "put out" and wasn't married was a "tramp."

The boy was a good actor; I've seen him in other things from that era. Kimble carrying him around reminded me of him carrying Colleen around. 😄

Just like Kimble, not to run when the boy reached the hospital door but instead saw him safely inside and taken care of. I loved the boy's Louis Pasteur line; nice bit of writing.

By the time the fight scene came on at the end I could hardly keep my eyes open so I missed the stunt man detail oznell wrote about.

That German woman's truck...another vehicle that made me feel ancient! 😄

Drug and alcohol abuse[edit]

Around the time of her separation from O'Neal, Moore began to abuse alcohol and drugs, namely amphetamines, and she became addicted. She continued acting, but her depression worsened over her impending divorce.

In 1970, Moore checked into the Camarillo State Hospital for psychiatric treatment. The next year, she was arrested for drunk driving after she and O'Neal got into a fight while she and their children were visiting O'Neal's Malibu home. After her arrest, she lost custody of her children.[2]

By the late 1970s, she was being supported financially by her daughter, Tatum, who had become an Academy Award-winning actress at age 10 and one of the highest-paid child stars of the era. The children were still in Ryan O'Neal's custody, and despite treatment, Moore continued to abuse drugs and alcohol. As a result, she was arrested five times for DUI during the 1980s.[2]

Hearing loss[edit]

In the early 1960s, Moore became deaf as a result of otosclerosis, which her doctor said resulted from a deposit of calcium in her middle ear. Moore said that she had to read lips to understand what people were saying. An operation restored her hearing in 1962.[7]

Death[edit]

In 1996, Moore, a longtime smoker, was diagnosed with lung cancer. On November 22, 1997, she died from the disease at age 63. Her daughter, Tatum O'Neal, was by her side at the time of her death. Moore was initially interred at Hillside Memorial Park in Redlands, California, but her family later moved her remains to Oak Grove Cemetery in her home town of Americus, Georgia.

Died at age 63.

Ha, ha @Pearlee , I was enjoying exactly the same tart expressions and comments from DJ when he was clearly registering how he regarded those kidnappers; as always, he was so good at conveying a lot of feeling, but with subtlety.

I was kind of disappointed at the fight scene-- couldn't really tell when the stunt man became visible. Thought maybe at the very end of the fight, when Kimble's face was sort of distorted? But, his face was sort of pulled out of shape, as it would be right after a brawl, so decided that wasn't necessarily the definitive shot of a stunt man's face. My eyesight must be worse than I thought! Must have happened in the middle of the fight... We'll have to rely on some of our fellow viewers to pinpoint it for us....

Oh, @mousiegirl , you will love the Shirley Knight episode-- it's called "The Homecoming". You'll find it easily in your DVDs-- it's toward the end of Season One.

Thanks for all the additional Moore/O'Neal info-- just fascinating story of a family with multigenerational issues. And what a series of life-long blows and obstacles for Joanna Moore. Despite various estrangements, Tatum seems to have stepped up to support her, and being there when she died, very significant...

ETA-- Oh, additionally, @mousiegirl , was interested to see from your post that she was from Americus, Georgia, which if I ever knew, I had forgotten. Whenever Joanna Moore speaks, I can hear the "honeysuckle" in her voice, intensified, of course, when she plays a Southern character. Same too, with Joanne Woodward, another Georgian, I think...
