Anyone watch the movie "Hours" with Meryl Streep

First of all, I could not get over that Nicole Kidman did not even look like herself and I did not know it was her until the end of the movie and I saw the credits. I did not see the movie from the beginning but saw Meryl Streep was in it and I wanted to see it as I had not seen it before. Do not know if this was true at all about any of the women in the movie. Thank you for any info. The acting was excellent but a depressing movie. I guess I have been subjected to Hallmark which are not of that sort.

I used to be a big fan of Meryl Streep's work. Then a few years ago at the Oscars she leapt to her feet to lead the applause for child rapist Roman Polanski, who is such a coward he fled the US to avoid prosecution.

I boycott her now. I'm sure it has no impact on her, but I feel better knowing I'm not supporting her.

I saw this was listed On Demand on TCM. I remember when it came out and a big deal was made about how Nicole Kidman did not look like herself because she had to wear a prostetic (sp?) nose. Was the movie worth watching? What was it about? If its a period piece those usually don't interest me, but I remember this getting fairly good reviews at the time.

ITA she looked so different that I had to look it up LOL I found this :

"Makeup artists had to transform Nicole Kidman into the homely novelist Virginia Woolf for "The Hours," a task that took three hours a day. The key was a large prosthetic nose that rendered Kidman virtually unrecognizable.

I had the movie on DVR and watched in the background between different things I was doing while cleaning house - I was totally lost about 15 minutes in, so I'm going to have to sit down and (properly) watch it again!

It is a sad movie. It covers 3 stories.

Nicole is the author in the distant past (Virgina Wolf, she is a real person) . Julianne Moore is in the 50s (I think) Meryl Streep is "now". They are all intertwined.

I watch it every time it is on & bought the BluRay.

Ed Harris' character Richard (in the Streep storyline) is the adult of the little boy Ritchie in the Moore storyline.

Same person, all grown up.

The common thread is the Woolf novel Mrs Dalloway. Also, there's a common feeling of being overwhelmed and trapped, with suicide as the only way out.

I love this movie. Saw it at the theatre and bought it on DVD.

Thank you so much for the responses. I think the movie is worth watching because of the quality of acting and the good actors in it. I always liked Ed Harris and I thought the little boy was just adorable. However, as I said, it is a depressing one. I think it may be one that you have to watch again to get all the thoughts of the movie.

I saw this in the theaters when it originally came out. I think Kidman got an Oscar for her role. I recorded it and will re-watch it soon since I don't remember a thing about it!

As a young woman, the brilliant novelist Virginia Woolf was considered an ethereal beauty. When she and her artist sister Vanessa Bell were still Virginia and Vanessa Stephen, they used to bowl over society onlookers. Of course, in Virginia's case the years took their toll and illness had its effect as well.

It was a very goodmovie, very depressing, but excellent acting. Nicole Kidman did win the Oscar for her role as well.....Julianne Moore is in it too, and does an excellent job as always, as does Meryl Streep.......Ed Harris is pheneomenal in his role too.....I have seen it a couple of times, and it is a wonderful movie, though depressing....

It is based on Michael Cunningham's excellent book with the same title. It takes Virginia Woolf's "Mrs. Dalloway" as a jump off point.

I like this film a lot, the way the timelines are woven together is engaging. Imagining characters, fictional and historic, and place them into situations and storylines the audience knows from their own lives is powerful and engaging.

Allison Jenney and Claire Danes are very good in their parts as well.
