Tom Hanks - nominated as Best Supporting Actor?

Forgive me for being stupid as I haven't seen the film, but why was Tom Hanks considered for Best Supporting Actor rather than Best Actor for "A Beautiful Day in the Neighborhood"?

After all, Fred Rogers was the main character, wasn't he?

The main character is a journalist assigned to do a story on Mr Rogers and the impact Rogers has on him. Matthew Rhys plays the Esquire magazine journalist.
