5:45 p.m. Eastern-- "The Manchurian Candidate" Laurence Harvey, Frank Sinatra Angela Lansbury, Janet Leigh

Explosive political thriller in which a previously captured member of the U.S. military (Harvey) is learned to have been programmed as an assassin by the Soviets and Communist China.

Notable for compelling performances, including Harvey, and Sinatra as Harvey's fellow soldier, who frantically tries to free his colleague from his deadly compulsion. Janet Leigh has a nice, sympathetic role, but the supporting power house in this is of course Angela Lansbury, Oscar-nominated as Harvey's lethally scheming, hideously warped, political mother. Wowsa.

A chilling and lingering film.

Scary movie. One of Frank Sinatra's best. Angela was really creepy.

Ditto on Angela being seriously creepy and scary.

I watched parts of Gaslight the other night and she's pretty creepy as the maid in that movie, too!

I will never forget an interview I saw with Angela Lansbury. And she talked quite a bit about The Mancurian Candidate. She said she could never get over the fact that she was not quite 3 years older than Laurence Harvey and yet she played his mother.

That's right, now that you mention it, @drizzellla, they always seemed to want her to play roles much older than her real age, interesting.

I wonder if it partly might be because she radiates a certain "authority", as a personality, and did even when she was very young...

Excellent point. Just look at Angela Lansbury in her first role in movies. She came across confident and self assured and she seemed to intimidate Ingrid Bergman.

@Oznell I think she was type cast by Hollywood. I think she might have even played Elvis' mother in a film.

Once she starred on Broadway in Mame, it all changed for her! She had cut her hair short was very slim, could sing and dance as well. I believe Hollywood saw her in a different light because of that.

I even enjoyed the remake with Denzell Washington, Meryl Streep and Liv Schrieber.

That was one of my favorite old movies. I can still remember parts of it. It's been remade but the one you mentioned is still the best.

Crazy, but it surprises me sometimes the things I remember from way back. I can still remember what Laurence Harvey and Frank Sinatra looked like while making that movie.

I'm not surprised that images from "The Manchurian Candidate" would be burned in your memory, @Annabellethecat66. It's such a searing and intense film. "Frank" and "Larry" looked pretty good back then too, even under conditions of duress!

@Oznell Yes! I remember especially Harvey was really attractive.

Laurence Harvey was a gay actor but he had to keep it quiet because back then....well...it wasn't accepted. He 'married' but it was for show.

It must have been very difficult back then to not show the world your real persona. He was a wonderful actor.

This is a great movie with a cast of superb actors/actresses.

When I first saw this in the movies I was not yet a teenager and didn't understand the movie at all. As I have mentioned in previous posts, my aunt would take me to the movies often and I also went with friends a lot. I just didn't get the gist of the movie and therefore didn't have much to say about it. All I knew was someone was brainwashed and wasn't quite sure what the entailed!!!!

Of course I have seen it a few times since as an adult and understand the story line . Now I can say it is a movie worth seeing.

This was such a good movie. "Evil" Angela Lansbury at her best.

I also enjoyed the remake with Denzel Washington.
