HGTV lottery dream home

I have come to really dislike the hgtv channel. I fail to see the point of David Bromstads role in his show lottery dreamhome. A person wins some money, he goes to a realtor and gets listings of houses for sale and then shows them to the buyer. Why does the couple not just go thru the realtor. The concept is pointless.

@webbgarner1, I have to respectfully disagree. I really like this show and especially the ideas he has for improving properties he is showing the winners. His expertise is design and color, but I always like his limited series Ccolor Splash. That said, I have been impressed and humbled by the way many winners have set lower budgets for their dream homes and, in many cases, those homes aren’t the super updated homes that everyone including first time buyers (think, House Hunters) think they will find on their limited budget. Those are the shows that annoy me. But to each his or her own.

Different strokes for different folks. This is one of my favorite shows on HGTV. I enjoy him and like seeing how folks are spending their winnings. I always find it funny that they push the idea that the winners take home what they actually won. If you win a million, after taxes you're still not a millionaire. . .although I wouldn't mind finding that out first hand!!

I like the show too. They are everyday people that win and do not go insane buying very expensive houses. Some do already own a house so that would also help them putting more of a down payment towards a new house. I would never go on the show if I won because old long lost relatives would be calling me asking for money. Once every 3 months I will put my whole $5 on scratchers. Most I every won was $20 guess no new house for me. Also 4 Christmas stockings have scratchers in them, I do it every year. Hope they win big.

I like seeing real estate in other parts of the country .... and am also impressed with how conservative people are when buying a home they could pay cash for!

I recal one winner of about $3 million nd he didn't want to spend more than $400k for the new home. Different strokes, as they say .... lol.

I do love this show and I do dearly love David.

The show seems to be very condensed, those hour long shows are brutal. Too much detail.

I get from watching that David is a realtor, as well as a designer, when a realtor is working a "territory" not their own, they often get input from local realtors. I know all the realtors in my area work together and end up splitting the fee when a house is sold.

I remember one show where a man had won a lot of money, David showed him a very big, luxurious home but after seeing it, the man decided on something more modest AND bought a home for his sister & nephew.

Although the ads for his show are flashy, it doesn't reflect the true vibe.

I don't live in a lottery state but would love to win if only to do the show with David!

This is one of the few shows that I still like on HGTV. As others have stated, the winners are usually regular folks who, thanks to the lottery, are able to buy a house that they wouldn’t have been able to afford otherwise. That said, they’re still pretty conservative in setting their budget. I also like the way David interacts with the winners. He treats them respectfully and usually stays within their budget, while maintaining his own personality. I enjoy watching it, much more than most of the other shows on HGTV.

This is the only show I watch faithfully. I live in the high priced NE, so I love to see how much house you can get for reasonable prices in other parts of the country. A five hundred thousand dollar house in Missouri would surely go for well over a million and more here in NY. I also like David's suggestions for changes. What does surprise me is that some of floor plans of those big, beautiful homes are often quite odd. I've seen narrow entrances, small hallways to kitchen and dining areas, steep staircases, etc.

I’ve seen the show a few times and then watched a few episodes last night. I enjoyed it. I also like to see different parts of the country.

I really like this show. It’s really cool how most of these winners buy normal priced houses and don’t go overboard. There has been one show where they bought a 16k square foot house in the mountains but they had won so much money it was barely a dent in their winnings.

I really enjoy this show and get a big kick out of David.

Sure, he's a bit over the top but for me, that's the fun of it. I enjoy seeing the different people and it's fun seeing how many of them don't want HUGE houses (tho a few do), but just something more than what they have and something they can enjoy for years to come.

I record most episodes, even the re-runs.

This is one of my favorite shows on HGTV. I like seeing regular people winning the lottery and seeing homes and scenery in other parts of the country. David uses a local realtor, who I am sure makes a very nice commission, as well as getting national attention. While a few winners really choose over the top homes for a large amount of money, most of them are very modest. David has often mentioned how smart they are. I like him, even though that sleeve really gets to me. I don't understand that.

A year ago last month I got rid of Direct TV and am using other cheaper source of entertainment. I signed up for Sling primarily because it had HGTV. I bet I haven't watched a full hour in total during the year. Their programming is so repetitive and stale I just can't stand it. It's been all about real estate for years now and I'm just not interested.

I watch it occasionally.

I did see an update about one of the families that were on the show. They bought a huge house in the mountains. They actually owned a piece of the mountain. Then they bought the property next to the original house.

They had to put it up for sale though because their son has a heart condition and the altitude was not good for him. I have no idea if they were going to be able to sell it.

I love the show and David! I like to see the prices of housing around the country. Living in NYC, I am always amazed at how much a buyer can get for a lower price, while here it would be double or trple the price.

He interacts well with the winners and I like to hear his decorating/renovating ideas.

The only HGTV I've watched in recent memory was the White House Christmas tour... I pretty much gave up on HGTV when it became nothing more than real estate and house flipping... On and on and on, over and over again... The shows all feature the same personalities, most of whom I don't care for and even if I did, it's overkill. I'm also not a fan of HGTV's usual aesthetic... Even when some actual decorating does occur it all tends to be cut from the same mold, which is not usually my style... Now, they've added what is more or less a game show to their roster... Thanks but no thanks...

@ccassaday Not sure if this is the same winner, but he bought a 16000 sq foot home but now is selling due to his son's heart condition and his ability to breathe better in a lower elevation. Just goes to show that money can't buy everything, but I would sure love to buy that house!

I do not have a problem with David, he can be amusing. But I just do not get the part of him getting the listings from a a realtor and then him showing the houses. I also have to say, I would be one of the ones on the conservative side if I won the lottery and purchasing a different house. I have seen some that look like they may have overextended theirselves . afterall I am sure taxes and upkeep on some of the finer homes runs into quite a bit of money. Any way for you guys that like the show, enjoy. I just don't. I am kind of with the group that has burned out on hgtv.

I remember the original episode, didn't know about this.

I don't have heart problems but I couldn't live at 6,000 feet.

I start getting altitude sickness at about half that.

Don't know why, just always have, even as a child.

And yes, I probably could acclimate, but why?
