I like a good story no matter where it takes place, but way, way, way too many space-based movies completely ignore physics which drives me nuts. In "Star Wars The Force Awakens" Han Solo flies into a planet at light speed to avoid their shielding and then slows down by hitting a few trees and snowbanks to land safely on the planet. Uh, writers? The speed of light is one hundred and eighty-six thousand miles per second. That's kind of fast. To decelerate from that kind of speed and preserve any chance of life surviving takes weeks/months. You don't just bump into a few trees and snowbanks and stop safely on the surface. I did like that in "The Martian" they kept the physics somewhat saner. They kept the time it took for communications real. They kept much of it real. They tweaked a few things here and there, but by and large they did a decent job.

In most sci-fi these days they just completely ignore physics. You're on the far reaches of the universe and you want to call home? No problem. There's no lag or delay at all thanks to their advanced technology. Which is impossible. A call home form the far reaches of the universe would take an eternity. Go from parked to light speed? No problem. Zip! Off you go. In the real world that kind of acceleration would have everyone on the crew turned into bloody splats on the back wall of the ship. The same with the super fast deceleration. They'd be bloody splats on the front walls of the ship. If the sci-fi writers were to write the story of Columbus discovering America, they'd have him getting on the back of his ship and waving goodbye to the queen then walk to the front of the hsip and wave hello to the native Americans about five seconds later.

There's a story in the trip itself. We saw that somewhat in "The Martian" where the crew aboard the ship was taking a somewhat normalish time to travel back and forth to Mars with their own storyline. You don't have to ignore physics to tell a good story. Far, far too many sci-fi writers completely ignore physics and assume it doesn't matter. It matters.

Now, how many have I liked watching? I like most of them even when they completely ignore physicis if there's a good story there. Oddly, many/most of the space movies are based on the common man battling an all controlling empire. I find it kind of ironic that the pro-globalism Hollywood types make movies railing against empires when that's exactly what globalism is trying to create, a global empire. There's kind of a mixed message there.

I watch movies for pure entertainment value. (If I want facts, I'll watch a documentary.)

Having said that: all of the "Star Trek" movies. Own them all on VHS and DVD as well! (Interesting documentary was made about all the futuristic things in those movies that later became reality - think "cell phone" for one.)

"Galaxy Quest" - too funny. And probably a myriad of others I can't remember. Oh, yes. "Gravity"; really liked that one.

The one sci-fi film I absolutely hated and kept falling asleep during - "2001: A Space Odyssey". Totally boring!
