Susan Hayward in "Smash-Up: The Story of a Woman"; and Bette Davis in "Deception" TCM Today

6:00 p.m. Eastern-- "Deception" Bette Davis became composer Claude Rains' "protege" in Manhattan, while cellist sweetheart Paul Henreid was missing in war-torn Europe. When she tries to make the break from Rains to be with true love Paul, it's "a bit of a sticky wicket", as the Brits say. Those who love movie interiors like I do, feast your eyes on the very high-style Forties' apartment that was set up for Bette. Swoon. Claude Rains' huge New York house is fittingly cold, and swank.

I had to laugh when I read the description of the Susan Hayward movie. Such a typical Hayward role. I think my all time favorite of her movies is I Want to Live. Love Love Love that movie!

That's right, @Group 5 minus 1, wasn't that called "Ada"?

Hayward fans, also watch out for the fun, colorful "Tulsa" where she plays an oil wildcatter. I love movies set in Oklahoma, and Hayward's a real spitfire in this. I think she's an untamed rancher's daughter, named "Cherokee". Robert Preston is good too.

Then, for a complete change of pace, the noirish British film-- "I Thank A Fool". Hayward is a refined woman who has nevertheless served time for the murder of her lover. Somehow, Peter Finch hires her (I think she's a nurse) to be the caregiver and companion to his troubled, child-like wife, played by the terrific Diane Cilento. Hayward and Finch soon develop a rapport (of course!) The details are fuzzy now, but this is spectacularly soapy and a kick to watch.

I think some of Hayward's films are available on Youtube, so if you can stand to watch on a computer, you can google titles and then pop the popcorn!

Susan Hayward was SO beautiful - and so watchable! "Backstreet" (1961) is a good SH film.....one of many.

Ah, yes.....Susan Hayward is one of my favorites. I liked watching her movements, the way she held her head and walked. Very elegant.

I Want to Live was one of my favorites, too. A real tearjerker.

Susan Hayward played a very similar role in the biopic about singer Lillian Roth, turned alcoholic. Loved her in the movie about Jane Froman, the singer who lost her leg.

I happened to watch the movie before the Susan Hayward movie. It was called the Chocolate Soldier. I did not catch the beginning of the movie, so not sure what was going on. The first scene I caught was Nelson Eddy in disguise trying to catch his wife being interested in another man while he was away. The dialogue was priceless. The wife knew that it was her husband in disguise.

She was coming back with witty answers to his questions. I really enjoyed the movie. Never heard of it before but will try and watch it again.

That is what I enjoy about TCM. I see movies and actors that I never heard of before. And expand my appreciation of old movies.

Well put, @drizzellla! That discovery of new (to me) talents and films, is a big part of the excitement for me as well.

Example: Years ago, I didn't have much regard for Norma Shearer-- but being exposed to more of her films made me appreciate this delicate, mercurial actress...

Norma Shearer was in a movie before the Chocolate Soldier, it was Smilin' Through. Never saw that movie before and only caught the end of it. But I must admit until about a year ago,the only movie I saw her in, was The Women. And I didn't care for her role. I thought she was letting Joan Crawford and her husband walk all over her. I am glad to see her in other roles.

[ REAL] [ RAW] [TALENT] there ever was.

I was very young when she died (and do remember at an early age); This was an extraordinary movie (Smash-Up) that kept me almost becoming victimized thinking each time she Could make the come back.

I loved every movie she did. CALLED natural talent.

Oznell, did you ever hear or see 'anything' that Jean Munroe was in? ( Pronounce J' as in French, Jean. As in jonh.

If not, try to catch anything she did. NOT A LOT OF INFO. ON HER..ONE HECK OF AN ACTRESS! Very early, back in the 30s. Only captions, but you could read her ever thought. POWERFUL!!

Deception: I can not stomach that one- period.

The story line was so good, how did BD ever come to (be casted)..must have known someone play to the audience and have anyone believe she was that desired? "really"?

Hi @NAES1, so great to have you, as always! I do stand guilty of loving Bette Davis as an actress-- I don't think there was anyone like her. But as a human being---- You have some excellent points.

Is there any chance the other actress you are referring to is Jeanne Moreau? She was fantastic-- "Jules et Jim", "The Bride Wore Black", etc. Her film "Lumiere" did seem like a bit of a vanity production to me (her character is an actress who is perfect, saint-like, ha) but I loved every minute of it because she is so fascinating and watchable...
