The Shop Around the Corner

As many of you know, the movie You've Got Mail is an update of this older movie from 1940 with Jimmy Stewart and Margaret Sullivan. I watched it last night; I've seen it before but not in probably 20 yrs or more. And much to my surprise, the Wizard of Oz (Frank Morgan) was Jimmy Stewart's boss in that, the shop owner! Since this film is from 1940, it was a year after the W. of Oz was made in 1939 so he looked the same.

My goodness, I was taken aback! When I tuned in, I was "off to see the Wizard" and didn't even realize it!

I also hadn't ever realized that some lines in You've Got Mail are exactly the same as in this film. Not many lines, but definitely some.

@Trudey I'm glad you saw it also. But I kept being kind of amazed at how Jimmy S. kept kind of "mouthing off" at his boss (the W. of Oz). I would never talk to a boss the way he did! And I don't mean being honest about the musical cigarette case - I mean other ways he talked to his boss. Did you think that too?

The Shop Around The Corner, You’ve Got Mail, and In The Good Old Summertime (musical version) are all variations on the same theme. I think The Shop Around The Corner is the sweetest and most endearing version. I saw the play of The Shop Around The Corner at the Shaw Festival, Niagara-on-the-Lake Ontario. It was a delight. If you can catch any version of the story, you will have a couple of hours of complete escapism and enjoyment.

@Pearlee It was definitely an interesting dynamic between boss and employee...especially for the time period of the movie. What cracked me up was the girl who was always dancing...she was hilarious.

Same premise of the musical In the Good Old Summertime, starring Judy Garland and Van Johnson made in 1949. Also with S Z “Cuddles” Sakall “geesh” 😱, Great music!

Let us know what you think after you watch it. I prefer You've Got Mail to this old version but it's still worth watching, with its eccentric characters!

I like S Z "Cuddles" Sakall. For Christmas a couple of years ago my son bought me his autobiography.

@Pearlee OMG...you must think I have lost my mind. I watched 3 movies last night, starring Jimmy Stewart on TCM and somehow got two of them all mixed up...LOL. I can't remember the name of the one that I thought was funny (girl dancing), but it wasn't the one you posted about. I did enjoy The Shop Around the Corner too.

Anyway...that's what happens after weeks with almost no sleep

The 60's Broadway musical, She Loves Me, is also based on Shop Around the Corner, it is a real delight.

@TrudeyLOL - I just figured I'd been in the bathroom or making coffee or otherwise not paying attention during the dancing girl parts! LOL Thanks for clarifying.

I saw it as a child on Broadway back in 1963, I remember how my Mom kept saying how adorable it was. Starred Barbara Cook and Daniel Massey, son of Raymond. I am glad to know there was a revival recently, the music was great.
