Anyone watch the MTM special on CBS last night?

hosted by Gayle King? I was VERY disappointed. I thought it was a special on Oprah. It was nothing like any other tributes I have seen when other stars pass away.

I recorded it by mistake (meant to record the show it pre-empted) but did watch it and I completely agree. It was a WEIRD show. If Oprah and Gayle were the only people available to film, why not just push it out a little and do a better job? Oprah had some nice stories, but the WHOLE show was about Oprah and her admiration for Mary Richards and Mary Tyler Moore - but it felt like mostly Mary Richards.

I also have a PBS special about Mary Tyler Moore on my DVR and that one I recorded intentionally right around Christmas. That was a MUCH better tribute and she was still alive then.

Oh I so agree, it was the Gayle and Oprah show and how MTM inspired Oprah, a huge disappointment.

Totally agree with you both. I felt it focused too much on Oprah. The clips were nice, but I was disappointed.

I didn't watch that special on MTM because before I even knew Moore was ill I watched most of a special about her on my local PBS. I thought that one was good. They did mention Oprah, but it was a short segment. Gayle was involved in the 40 minutes or so that I saw.

@cookinfreak - Oh my thoughts exactly - ALL about Oprah (that's because Gayle King did the special). It's sad they didn't talk to her true friends and co-workers more - would rather have seen that than Oprah. By the way, has anyone heard from Valerie Harper - I'm concerned she hasn't made a statement. I'm hoping she is doing well.

I agree! TOO MUCH Oprah. I might get flamed for this, but nowadays the SAHM Laura Petrie character is unpopular and they spent more time telling us how wonderful the Mary Richards character was, how she could make it after all and how the character was an inspiration to young women. That may be, but had it not been for Laura Petrie, we wouldn't have known who MTM was, to even have an interest in watching her new show. I did enjoy seeing DVD and his part of the special - love him! It would have been nice to see more people who actually worked with her telling about MARY TYLER MOORE rather than spending so much time with Oprah and her infatuation with Mary Richards.

It was a great disappointment in the time spent on Oprah. When DH saw what I was watching, he wanted to know about the Oprah show I was watching! lol I would have liked if they presented more history and info about MTM and her life than just mention of MTM show & Laura Petrie.

I will keep my eye out for a "real tribute" to come on MTM. I am interested more in her story and health issues that she had to fight. I read that MTM was actually blind for the last several years, in fact when she filmed the Hot in Cleveland episode they said her sight was already pretty much gone. Plus, I didn't know that she was in hospice care for the last two years. She kept this all private from the public, as she struggled to stay alive. Her husband really did a great job in taking care of her in these last years.

I happened to flip to it and watched most of it. I agree about too much Oprah. She is everywhere, it seems, and I am tired of seeing her.

Oprah tells us how to live a full life, how to forgive, how to lose weight, etc.

I can do very well without her advice, thank you very much.

I'm not in the 'hate Oprah' club, but I did FF through much of that part and the rest was pretty decent. They had to throw that together pretty fast.

I agree with you. Oprah is everywhere.

20/20 is on tonight for a full hour of Mary Tyler Moore. I think it will be more in depth. It comes on at 10 P.M. EST on ABC.

Thankfully I DVR'd the show and managed to skip all of the o portions. People were all over it on Twitter, totally unnecessary to have her on for so long.
