I remember Truth or Consequences, Queen for a Day - those poor women crying tears of joy because they won a washig machine and a year's supply of detergent, What's My Line, To Tell the Truth.

If I was home sick from school, I would love to watch Concentration.

There was a show with Groucho Marx and a bird, but can't remember the name.

I remember all the ones mentioned plus Concentration, Play Your Hunch, Seven Keys, You Dont Say, original Match Game, original Price is Right, Who Do You Trust, Joker is Wild, Win, Lose or Draw, Dating Game, I've Got a Secret, and original To Tell the Truth, original Jeopardy, and I remember who all their hosts were too.

Yes, it sure was Bill Cullen in the last 50's, early 60's. At the same time, he also hosted the night time game show, I've Got a Secret.

@qualitygal ... Yes, I do remember Video Village, Queen For a Day, and Truth or Consequences. I also remember Who Do You Trust? ... which I think was hosted by a young Johnny Carson. I also remember Beat the Clock, Dough Re Mi, People are Funny, and The $64,000 Question...until all the cheating was discovered about that one. Wow...haven't thought about these shows in years!

Every time I hear Crimson and Clover it reminds me of The Generation Gap. Tommy James and the Shondells played "Crimson and clover, over and over," and the adult had to guess the words. Don't remember if they knew or not.

Loved the $64,000 question. I even remember some of the questions. I also remember when some of the contestants first appeared.(Joyce Brothers). But I especially adored the commercials. Persian Melon,Cherries in the Snow! There was a Marine whose category was cooking. Today he'd probably have his own program on the Food channel.

I believe his winning question was to name three kinds of pears. I even remember Jack Benny-don't remember his category but he stopped at $64.00!!

I remember Jeopardy with Art Fleming, Wheel of Fortune with Chuck Woolery, Family Feud with Richard Dawson, Match Game with Gene Rayburn, Hollywood Squares with Paul Lynde in the center seat, and Password with Allen Ludden. Those were the days!

I'm 70 so I remember way, way back on game shows. Remember some were seen only in certain areas of the US back then.

1930s-1950s[edit]

Television game shows descended from similar programs on radio. The very first television game show, Spelling Bee, was broadcast in 1938. Truth or Consequences was the first game show to air on commercially licensed television. Its first episode aired in 1941 as an experimental broadcast. Over the course of the 1950s, as television began to pervade the popular culture, game shows quickly became a fixture. Daytime game shows would be played for lower stakes to target stay-at-home housewives. Higher-stakes programs would air in primetime. During the late 1950s, high-stakes games such as Twenty One and The $64,000 Question began a rapid rise in popularity. However, the rise of quiz shows proved to be short-lived. In 1959, many of the higher stakes game shows were discovered to be rigged and ratings declines led to most of the primetime games being canceled.

An early variant of the game show, the panel game, survived the quiz show scandals. On shows like What's My Line?, I've Got A Secret and To Tell The Truth, panels of celebrities would interview a guest in an effort to determine some fact about them; in others, celebrities would answer questions. Panel games had success in primetime until the late 1960s, when they were collectively dropped from television because of their perceived “low budget” nature. Panel games made a comeback in American daytime television (where the lower budgets were tolerated) in the 1970s through comedy-driven shows such as Match Game and Hollywood Squares. In the UK, commercial demographic pressures were not as prominent, and restrictions on game shows made in the wake of the scandals limited the style of games that could be played and the amount of money that could be awarded. Panel shows there were kept in primetime and have continued to thrive; they have transformed into showcases for the nation's top stand-up comedians on shows such as Have I Got News for You, Would I Lie to You?, Mock the Week, QI and 8 Out of 10 Cats, all of which put a heavy emphasis on comedy, leaving the points as mere formalities. The focus on quick-witted comedians has resulted in strong ratings, which, combined with low costs of production, have only spurred growth in the UK panel show phenomenon.

There is a small cable channel called Buzzr that is owned by Freemantle Media (Simon Fuller & the same people that brought you American Idol). Buzzr plays many of these old game shows and even runs the old commercials along with them. It is fun to see so many of these old shows and those commercials of days gone by. Look around on your programming and see if you can find Buzzr in your area.

My sister and I were discussing Queen For a Day last weekend and we both said it had to be the first of reality TV. I remember all of the sad stories and crying. The lady the audience pitied the most got her wish.., usually a washing machine or something.

My favorite when I was a kid was Art Linkletter's Kids say the Darnedest Things, not a game show, but very funny,
