RECOMMENDATION FOR DOWNTON ABBEY COMPLETE SERIES

I didn't watch this series and I wish to purchase it for my sister for Christmas. I know that time is ticking........ They have one on AMAZON that says it is the "original" and the UK edition.

I guess I need a little help here because I am not familiar with the show. Also, how many seasons was it on?

Anyone?

There were 6 seasons.

The UK version does NOT have some scenes that were aired on PBS - which is disappointing. I don't know if the two versions you are considering are similar or different. To a seller, "original" may mean what aired originally in the UK.

I would recommend reading the reviews of each one you are considering. If you can see a photo of the packaging and it indicates "PBS version" that would be ideal - but I don't know if there is such a version to purchase. I received my set from a PBS pledge drive, and still received the UK version.

@lynne6was7 The one I was looking at says PBS. It is a 22 disc set. It is close to $70. There is another one closer to $100 that has extra footage and interviews. Not having watched it, I don't know if that is worth an extra $30. If it is, I don't have a problem with the extra cost.

How many discs came with your set if yoy don't mind me asking?

I would have to check my set for you this evening, if that's not too late for your purchase, as I can't recall the total number of discs. I do know there should be 52 episodes. I notice at least one Season 1-6 option on Amazon that says "51 episodes with space for your final episode disc." You do NOT want to purchase that one as it does NOT include the series finale.

If there is a PBS version, I would recommend it over the UK version. IMO the extra scenes that aired on PBS are more valuable than the interviews. Those of us who watched each episode on PBS multiple times know when a scene is missing. LOL However the ones I am able to zoom in on Amazon are the UK version. The $100 set I see - with coasters and bell pull - is what PBS is offering on their pledge drives this year, but the discs are UK version. Personally, I wouldn't need all the extras in the $100 as long as the $70 option has 52 episodes. There may not be any such thing as a PBS version on DVD.

Be very careful with the information on here. I bought the first season and I got the UK version. I read it is the longer version because the US version had scenes cut out and episodes were shortened to accommodate the US audience's preference that their TV shows move along faster. When I watched the UK version, yes I did see parts not in the US version.

@Bhvbum and @lynne6was7 The one I am looking at on Amazon is $64.99. It has the PBS insignia on the front and also says "original UK edition". Amazon does a poor job of product description. It has good reviews. I am leaning toward this one. I will keep checking back this evening and then I better bite the bullet and order.......

As I mentioned, I received my DVDs via a PBS pledge drive a year ago - seasons 1-5 together and season 6 followed. My cases have a PBS banner across the top but indicate original UK edition in the lower right corner. There are 3 discs per season, 18 total. I rewatched season 5 in advance of season 6 airing last January, then rewatched the season 6 episodes each week. There were definitely scenes missing from the season 5 and 6 episodes, but nothing that affects the plot line. I noticed nothing new that I had not seen on PBS. Hope this helps. In any case, your sister will get her DA fix, which is all that matters. LOL

Thanks so much, @lynne6was7 ! I agree, that she will get hours of pleasure rewatching these. It is going to be a LONG COLD winter and she can snuggle up with her dog and watch away.

Thanks @Hooty, I never thought about the PBS site. I am not on FACEBOOK. I ordered the PBS verson from Amazon on Monday and hoping for delivery before Christmas.

I may have to borrow the tapes from my sister this summer and watch for myself!
