Poldark Episode 8 Question. Possible spoilers

In last night's episode there was a man that met with Ross about paying back a loan and offering him a part of their business venture. Were these men the ones that were in on the failed smelting business? They mentioned that they were just released from Debtor's prison and Ross had given one of them a loan.

I didnt followthat either. He showed him the accounting of the revenue but he had just gotten out of debtors prison so how did the business make money then?

From what I got there was someone else doing the business while he was in prison.

Does anyone think Demelza and Ross will heal the rift between them ? And WHY would George want to come back to Elizabeth's home to live? Elizabeth seems to adjusted well to being his wife.

Shawnee, two men were mentioned. The first one to be released from Debtor's prison got money from Ross and started a business. The second one was just released and the first man offered him an interest in the business venture. The man Ross met with looks familiar and I think he was in n the smelting plant that went bust. But I am not sure. I hope this makes sense as I do not remember the men's names.

George is moving to Trenwith to goad Ross. He wants to really be in Ross's face about the marriage. Elizabeth is nothing but a gold digger. Just cannot stand her.

Anyone else think that Elizabeth was already pregnant on her wedding day? My bet is on a dark haired little boy. I wasn't going to keep watching because I'm not a fan of soap operas, but I turned it on last night and got pulled in again.

There were two men, both involved in the failed smelting company, Carmore. The one who met with Ross had just gotten out of prison, the other didn't go to prison and was the one Ross to whom Ross had given the money.

Elizabeth didn't spare a thought about R's marriage, Delmaza, or their child. She actually expected him to leave them for her and was outraged when he didn't. If she had noted his behavior on the morning after, she wouldn't have been surprised. He couldn't get away fast enough, didn't even kiss her before he left. His behavior was that of a man who has picked up a woman in a bar and regrets it in the morning.

Elizabeth has a boy born on Valentines day, 8 months after her wedding and 9 months after her night with Ross. In time George suspects the child is not his, Elizabeth knows the father is Ross.

I felt like the other poster that Elizabeth is with child. What a surprise that would be for George! Ross gets more than even and bests him.

Elizabeth is looking out for her son and the family by marrying George - lots of that sort of thing went on in the past. She's annoyed that Ross never came back to visit her or contact her. Ross is torn here and there. Demelza was way out of her league marrying him so she has only herself to blame. I will watch the whole series to see how it all plays out. Demelza being a flirt is just what I'd expect.

Ross never had any intention of leaving Demalza and when he realized the morning after that is what Elizabeth expected he cut her off mid sentence. She says,"What are we" he says "I must think" she says, "When" he cuts her off again and says, "Soon"

He wants to prevent her marriage to George but now knows the only way is to replace him.

As to Delmaza being out of her league, time will tell. Stayed tuned.

I wanted to mention to all who respond to the Poldark thread that one always needs to remember, it's just a story.

Factually in the day and time the story takes place, Men had rule over the females. Demelza wouldn't have mouthed off to Ross without him beating her or putting her out permanently. He probably wouldn't have married her either - she had no income or property, no status either.

Elizabeth is doing what a woman would do back then to survive - marry to be taken care of and to have her family provided for. Romantic love was not something like we have today. You must have something financial or some title and standing going for you.

Women put up and shut up. Men took care of business and did what they wanted.

It's just a story after all.

@Puzzle Piece First of all I enjoyed reading your post. But (speaking entirely for myself here) I know it's a story, but those of us who watch soaps are used to being hard on the characters/actors, etc. I like to be able to 'bust' on them knowing it is 'just a story'.

It's fun to think what I'd do (or not do) knowing full well, I'm dreaming....Ha!

I think she's acting like a woman who was 'spunky' would act. If I were as beautiful as she, I'd probably want to prove to myself that I could make a man WANT me, like she did. I'd most likely back out too. That's the difference between someone who really, really loves someone and the other person vacillating between two people (like Ross has been doing).

Unlike some of you, I'm not as familiar with what a woman back then would probably say or do (especially those of you who read the books). I 'don't think' a woman would make her husband sleep in another room on a small bed like she did. She might think about it, but my guess is women were mere objects the males owned and no man back then would be willing to sleep like she made him do.

Did you guys catch those two 'beauty marks' she put on? Was that a signal to males she was 'available'? Is that what the ladies did back then? I don't know. I've never thought about it.

Some of this show goes over my head. All of that stuff with Ross and the mines and then when he went to meet the guy who'd just gotten out of jail, I don't understand any of that.

I wonder if the Dr is going to join the military and then he will finally marry the lovely rich lady? What do you guys think?

I know that women were treated differently then and that this is fiction but I still do not like Elizabeth, not one bit! She did not love Francis and treated him poorly. If we did not have certain feelings for the characters why would we watch?

Not having read the book, can't know for sure, but yes I would not be surprised to find out that Elizabeth is preggers at her wedding to George. She certainly is a pampered thing and the elderly aunt at her home is a hoot!

Was surprised at what a tease Demelza was at the dance. I know she was doing it to revenge Ross, but still, a married woman with a kid those days--she was risking alot.

Dr Dwight Enys is the best part of that series, I think. He is the only character I can care about and I definitely hope he gets back with that beautiful heiress.

I have a feeling she is pregnant, so totally agree with you. Hope Ross and Demelza can reconcile. I see more chemistry between them than Ross and Elizabeth. Never totally understood his attraction to her.

I know it's the story line, but I don't think much of Ross since he cheated on his wife. Tall, dark and handsome only goes so far no matter what era you're living in. To me Ross is a cad and a cheat, Demelza can do better. I do believe Elizabeth is pregnant too.

Francis cheated on Elizabeth with prostitutes. Demelza gave the 'come on' to Malcom and then played coy and unavailable.

As for the beauty marks she sported, they were reserved for women of status and especially for the French and German courts. I don't understand her wearing them especially since it was the men who wore them the most.

It is coming off a a sopa opera and that is probably what will get me disinterested.

Elizabeth is somewhat dim and doesn't think long term. Anyone with a brain would know that George can not be trusted. She had other options for help and advice, Lord Penvenen, Carolyn's uncle could and would have advised her. There were others of the gentry she could have called upon.

Winston Graham portrayed the behavior at that time accurately; unfortunately, Horsefield does not.
